I carry this book with me during nursery visits, just in case I'm struck by that "Wow, I'd love to have that!" inspiration. Which leads me to say how much I appreciate the construction and form factor of this book. The rounded page edges, the water-resistance coating on the cover and the matte finish on the inside pages all make this an easy to use reference.Lone Pine has produced other books with this same look and feel, for example Perennials for Ohio and Annuals for Ohio.The authors have done a great job including high quality photos, an introduction to each group of trees and shrubs and recommended varieties (backed by Fred Hower's extensive experience as a horticultural consultant, certified arborist and landscape designer.)Recommended read and reference.

As an Ohioan, anything by Fred Hower is worth reading. I enjoyed the pictures and the ideas for my own gardening, but wish that the book was more technical. It is very frustrating to me that the book doesn't rely more heavily on Latin names, doesn't cover many cultivars, and is a little on the thin side. It is certainly more of a "greatest hits" for Ohio home gardeners than a complete reference for an Ohio gardening enthusiast or professional.All that being said, I wouldn't part with my copy, and have given copies as a gift. I'd love to see Mr. Hower write more, particularly an expanded version of this volume, or more specific areas in addition to it, especially perennial gardening.

As a native buckeye with no plant knowledge and a black thumb, this book is great! It is an alphabetical reference to all the native trees & shrubs. It tells you their good points, bad points, tips for success, etc in a very practical format. It also has TONS of photos of how the plant looks in different seasons. We moved out of the city & onto an acre, and this book has been used a lot!

This was a masterpiece - concise yet comprehensive, and very interesting. Even though I majored in a science (chemistry) when I was in university, I learned a great deal. Dr. Coyne makes an unassailable case for the validity of the Theory of Evolution, supporting his statements with evidence from a variety of scientific disciplines. I must add that you definitely don't have to be a scientist to understand it. I'm going to keep this book as my primary reference when I encounter deniers of evolution.

I had to buy this for my college evolution class. I am a Christian who believes evolution is true. Yes, we do exist! Some of the diehard Christians would say I'm not actually Christian for this, but who's to say our Creator did not enable us to evolve? Regardless, that's a whole different argument, but I just wanted to point out that my review is from the point of view of a Christian who believes in evolution.As a whole, I did really like this book. He makes many good points and backs up his points with interesting evidence, some of which I wasn't even aware of, despite being a science student. I found out about midway through my class that I didn't really need to buy this book since my professor would go over the key topics of certain chapters of this book that he wanted to discuss, but I would still find myself reading the chapters myself because I found all the little stories and such that he includes to be very interesting. Normally, like most other college students, if I don't HAVE to read the chapters, I won't! But yet I did with this book. My professor really liked this book as well, though, of course, he got his degree in evolutionary sciences and is friends with Jerry Coyne.The only thing I was opposed to in this book is that sometimes he does go on tangent-like ramblings, usually whenever he was directly trying to discredit Christianity. Not creationism, but Christianity. These rants weren't very often though and can be ignored, but as a Christian it was a bit off-putting. I can perfectly well understand discrediting creationism, but discrediting a whole religion is a bit much, especially when there are others like me who are Christians who believe in evolution. In fact, there was a good number of Christians in my evolution class who had such beliefs.Nevertheless, if you can ignore his tangents like I did(which is the only reason I didn't rate this 5 stars - I would rate it 4.5 stars), then you'll find this book to be a very good read!

That would be 35 million centuries ago.The basic concepts of evolution began to be worked out by Charles Darwin only a century and a half ago. He had much of it right but there were gaps in his knowledge of precisely what was happening. His enormous contribution was made well before the discovery of the basic unit of life, the gene, that tiny package of chemicals arranged in very specific combinations that have produced differences in life forms. But Darwin had the basics of the science very right. Later insights, built on the emergence of knowledge about genetic structure, led to an understanding that species evolve, gradually but steadily, into more successful forms. And now, today, well over ten million individual species are on our planet, each working to become more efficient and more successful.This is a fascinating science, one that throws off so many important observations. Of course, evolution has been the target of other theories of how species change and how human life appeared on the planet. But evolution is provable; records exist of earlier, less successful versions of species today. Professor Coyne is careful to discuss the process of proof since this is such a fundamental requirement in any complete discussion of evolution.A difficult subject is made alive and constantly fascinating in Why Evolution is True. Be prepared to race over many difficult scientific concepts but at the end you will be in awe of the power of nature over many billions of years. A marvelous book.

I loved this book. I literally didn't know ANYTHING about evolution. I was one of those people scratching their heads wondering why on earth monkeys are still here? This was the second book I read on the topic, the first being Richard Dawkins' The Greatest Show On Earth.These two books together make for great companion pieces. Dawkins book is thicker and he tends to try and spend a bit more time explaining things and going into detail, whereas this book is much more succinct and Coyne moves quickly from evidence to evidence.He's a really great writer with an immense vocabulary. The skill with which it was written is as enjoyable an experience to read and take in as the topic itself is interesting.Language might be a bit difficult for younger readers, but still a very important book to own. After reading these two books, you walk out feeling like an expert on evolutionary biology yourself. EX. there are professional terms used occasionally and explained (such as dimorphism). Check it out!P.S. Question to those who own the re-issue: It says it has over 300 pages, my copy has about 270 including references. What kind of extra material is in the rest of it? I expected so much more out of this book. I bought it on a recommendation hoping to help some stomach issues I have been having. Reading through the first section was more like listening to the same song on repeat. What took 1/3 of the book could have easily been done in one chapter as she just kept repeating the same thing. "You are taking too many antibiotics", "you are not eating whole natural foods" "Don't be afraid of dirt". Actually no I am not and yes I am and no I am not! I get to the next section hoping for some more insight. Stop taking unnecessary antibiotics and start eating whole foods. OK since I am doing both of those things I keep reading hoping for more. Add probiotics. Well yea, we all know that. But don't mix certain ones, research it. What? Why not just tell me what not to mix? I decided not to go as low as one star as there probably is some good info in here for someone who has no idea about gut health whatsoever but if you have spent a little time reading up online don't waste your money.

We live in a new age of weird diseases and symptoms -- many traveling under the "auto-immune" banner. People by the droves go to their primary care doctors and complain of stomach and digestive ailments (bloating, food allergies, abdominal pain), light-headedness, fatigue, skin rashes, eczema, rosacea, and worse. Their doctors, in turn, follow the protocols of their training and order up standard tests in search of something physical. The tests come back negative. Now doc is beginning to wonder if he has a hypochondriac on his hands, and the patients either persist or resign themselves to pain and misery, becoming depressed as symptoms continue to plague them. Sometimes more tests are ordered, but seldom is a solution found. It's a bad scene all around. Vicious, meet circle. The misery continues.Well, if all politics are local, all health is in the gut. That's right. We are the microbial profile we feed on a daily basis. And while "feed" mostly means the mouth, it also includes the skin. Dr. Chutkan sees it as a twin mission: living dirty and eating clean. That means we do ourselves no favors by constantly cleaning our hands with hand sanitizers, applying skin products and soaps with anti-bacterial elements and good-bacteria killing chemicals (go ahead, read the ingredients, see if you have the slightest idea about what you are slathering to your skin and scalp on a daily basis... didn't think so).The best part: Chutkan offers practical tips on turning it around -- what you should eat and what you should not eat. Watch out for corn, soy products, and sugar especially. They kill the Good Army and arm the Terrorist in your gut flora. They are almost all GMO-made monstrosities by now, thanks to companies like Monsanto, which have their profits (and yes, Big Pharma's, too, because sick people drive profits) to watch after. Certain bacteria (bad) thrive on sugar and artificial sweeteners and will hijack your body's eating preferences. What we call a "sweet tooth" is actually a type of bad bacteria clamoring from your gut for more of what they need to survive (that it makes you sick means little to them, they are out for themselves and haven't a clue that they will die with you).Chutkan also offers some basic day-to-day living advice, too. Chutkan even devotes a chapter to the hardcore cases. Here she discusses fecal transplants, the latest frontier for people who cannot turn around their severe conditions through diet and lifestyle changes alone. Feces from healthy patients with the correct microbial profiles are transplanted into the intestines of the sick patient with miraculous results (just look the other way and get over your aversion, I guess). It's been a life-changer for people with relentless conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, pouchitis, infectious diarrhea, etc. Animals don't eat other animals' feces for nothing. Nature is often instructive (and gross). It's squeamish patients who often choose not to heed such lessons.Finally, and not least importantly, the book ends with 95 pages of "microbiome solution" recipes, mostly for dishes that will feed the good and suppress the bad bacteria that live within you -- food for stomach, skin, and soul.Yep. Brave New World (which looks suspiciously like our grandparents' Brave OLD World, before the corporations and chemicals started to hijack our willingly sheep-like lives). Advice: Buy or check out of the library. Then fight back against bad bacteria and bad businesses that will shed no tears over your slow and protracted demise.

Excellent book for so many reasons!! Just one is that I've been taking several different probiotics recommended by my functional medicine physician for the past few years. I learned that the reason I need to eat more leafy greens and vegetables is to feed the good bacteria b/c they don't always permanently take up residence just because you take a capsule every day. If they're not receiving the food they need, they can pass out of your system which makes room for the bad bacteria. Certainly helps motivate me to eat better!

This book was a fascinating approach to a healthy lifestyle. I'm an MD and extremely frustrated at how little the western medical community knows about nutrition and diet as they relate to medical complaints that we see all the time in our patients. This book will help me personally, as well as with the medical advice I offer patients and family/friends. And the recipes look amazing- I am inspired to try all of them. Some of the book got a bit repetitive and a bit preachy, but don't let that stop you from integrating her message into your life! I will be recommending this book to everyone I know.

I bought this after watching Dr. Chutkan on the Megyn Kelly show. Having fibromyalgia and CFS, she has shown me how I can make improvements to my existing treatment and what changes I probably need to make. Of course I will talk to my doctor first. My 8 yr old son has had anxiety and chronic GI issues for the last 4 years. I'm going to get him started on her dietary recommendments. This is a great book that explains how the microbiome is at the center of our health!

Dr. Chutkan is one of my favorite doctor authors. I love how she's able to simplify the topic of the microbiome & make it very understandable for non-medical folks like myself. Unfortunately she doesn't seem to be open to the idea of working with food sensitivities due to unreliable testing. I hope that she & other doctors would start to consider the MRT blood test as part of their protocol. My son & I were helped tremendously as a result of the MRT & follow-up LEAP diet. I wonder if the difficult case she writes about could have been helped further by eliminating reactive foods?

What an incredible wealth of information. I have read this book several times and now use it as a guide. Dr. Chutkan delivers the commen sense that has been missing from the medical industry. For the first time, I am finding the solutions to my health issues. 40 years, my issues have been getting worse... and now it all makes sense. A National Book Award finalist this book deserves all its awards.In a time like today when we face the possible repression of our people, it behooves us to examine history. So many of us believe our founding fathers were good people. We believe what they said and did was sacrosanct. We've honor them and set them up as near dieties. But, in reality they were people. Full of flaws, just like us. Had they lost the Revolutionary War, they would have been shunned and called traitors. Having won, we herald them as heroes.In Chains we examine what it might have been like during that turbulent, uncertain time to have been a slave. The main character, Isabel, is a Negro child, trying to protect her younger sister. Alone, enslaved, abused, she struggles to achieve her rightful freedoms. The author did an amazing job of telling Isabel's story without overdramatizing the hardships. Made it easier for me to read.The times are tempestuous at best. Finding herself in New York City at the time of the British invasion, Isabel sways from the rebel side to the British side. Her goal is not a country's freedom, which she recognizes as not pertaining to her, but the freedom of herself and her sister. She'll risk her life to achieve that goal.Each chapter begins with a clip from a primary source, a newspaper article, a letter from a patriot or a British soldier, an excerpt from our historical documents. Those headings ground the chapter in history. The author strives to tell Isabel's story as accurately as she can all these years later.Book 2 and 3 are finished. Thank goodness for those of us just finding this trilogy. I forgot to write this review after my son was reading this book at school. I read it as well to see what my son was reading.I took a long break from fiction before picking this book up because books I read didn't draw me that much. I even started to question writers' abilities to write another great book after picking up some bad ones to read. The well has been emptied. That's what I thought.This is the first book I read by Laurie Halse Anderson and from then on, I started looking for her other works. I loved the voice of the main character. It drew me in right away. I couldn't put it down. Writing was flawest. And I almost never say that about most of the books I read. When writing flaws and the character speaks through, you immerse yourself to see the main character's journey with your heart leaping. The writer made me care and root for the protagonist.You can check out the first chapter before you buy the book. And if you enjoy it, you won't be disappointed. If someone really pushed me to the wall to pick a chapter from that book to remove, it would be the first chapter. With each page, you get another treat.The writer hid one important fact from the start to hit you on the face when it's revealed later on. I raised a question in the first chapter and thought the writer was careless to reveal it. I was wrong. A less accomplished writer would do just that, reveal that information in the first chapter. But not Laurie. She knew that waiting and revealing it later will shock you and it did just that.Many writers never let their fiction characters have small triumphs along the way. When the main protagonist had small victories, I wasn't bored but cheered on.What a wonderful way to weave history and three dimentional characters. Descriptions were sharp. Settings were well drawn out. And what a great history lesson at the same time.This book has been picked by my son's teacher. My son is ten. I questioned if this book is suitable for such a young age group when I was engrossed in details of tortures and mistreatments of slaves. But it would be unjustice to hide it from young kids who are learning about history. They need to see things in light. And history does repeat itself.(It might not be a good read for your son if he's reading comics or Diaries of a Whimpy Kid. My son didn't complain but wasn't eager as well to get started. When I questioned him to see how much he understands from it, I was nicely surprised how well he understood what was going on. So don't be afraid to give it to your kid. But don't be mad if your son prefers comics. Be patient.)

This is a GREAT book. Very moving and touching, sad and educational. I learned a lot while getting deeply attached to Isabel and Ruth. Written well, and an easy read, I finished very quickly, hard to put down! I think everybody should read this book, but those in particular that are studying or are interested in women's, African American, revolutionary, or slave history.

I first checked this book out at my local library out of curiosity, since some of my family members, including me are autistic. I was hesitant that it might be a hard read or a boring read. What a surprise! This book is riveting! I immediately ordered myself a copy and am still reading it. Since that time, I have purchased another copy to pass around my family so I can keep my own copy at home. Great book. Well researched. This is a book that I will value for a long, long time.

As a mom to a child with autism, this was a much needed read. It didn't teach me much about my daughter (except that her impressive indifference to cold is apparently part of her autism). But it gave me a whole lot of perspective, and filled me with gratitude - for all the people who worked so hard to get to where we are today, where a diagnosis leads to services rather than blame and institutionalization. What individual parents were able to accomplish is so inspiring, it has me reevaluating what more I could be doing. The book was well written and drew me in quickly. Somewhere after the first 300 pages it became a little slower, but there was always enough to keep me reading and I'm very glad I did.

I gave this book five stars because it not only did a great job of giving a chronological history of the disorder, but of also making it a personal story that many people can relate or empathize with. Many people I know do not fully realize what autism is, and usually have ideas about it that are not completely true. I would recommend this book to anyone who is curious about the disorder or who are directly involved with it (those who have autism, parents of autistic individuals, and therapists that work with autistic people).

This book was not always easy to read, as some of the history was disturbing, but I learned so much about how we have gotten to where we are now. As with many new medical conditions there is a lot of trial and error to go through before figuring out just what you're dealing with. There were so many heroes along the way sacrificing so much to get their story told so that people would know about what life was like for the families affected by autism. I appreciated the time line at the end to help put all the characters and events into chronological order to serve as a review.

Having an autistic son who is diagnosed as an Asperger's I was very interested in this book and what it had to say of the spectrum. Many of the people talked about in the book I had read about or had read what they had written but it was good to read the comparisons of the different groups. It would be very helpful to all parents if there was one place where all of the information could be found instead being so disjointed.

I have a son-in-law who is autistic. This book has been so helpful in understanding how to help him during visits to our home. It also makes me appreciate how hard it is for him to get out of the comfort of his home. He truly is quite brave!

Living with a child with autism born in the early 80's and having to research and find someone to help me figure out how to help her, I can tell you this book has given me a lot of understanding about the struggles that I was not aware of.

This is an extraordinary book. John Donvan is a television correspondent for ABC, and Caren Zucker is a journalist and producer. Together, they have dug deep into the history of autism – from an unknown psychiatric disorder to a diagnosis climbing from 4 to 5 cases per 10,000 people in 1966 to approximately 1 per 100 today. Donvan and Zucker tell the story of autism in 46 fast-paced chapters, presenting detailed accounts of the biographies of the characters: parents, children, psychologists, physicians, advocates and more --- each viewed as if seen through a hand held camera. When a child in a family is not right, the whole family suffers.Such was the case when Donald who was born in 1933 to affluent parents in Forest, Mississippi.Donald was an odd child:When he was seven, an examiner asked him a question for the Binet-Simon IQ test. If I were to buy four cents’ worth of candy and give the storekeeper ten cents, how much would I get back? I’ll draw a hexagon, Donald replied….He showed scant interest in the inhabitants of the outside world, and that included his parents. Of all his peculiarities, this was the most difficult for them to accept – that he never ran to his father when he came home from work, and that he almost never cried for his mother. Relatives were unable to engage him…Oblivious to those around him, he would turn violent the instant his activities were interrupted…it became clear he was protecting sameness. Mary Triplett, Donald’s mother concluded that he was hopelessly insane, before the diagnosis of autism was invented. Her husband, Oliver, a lawyer, was known as Beamon to everyone, and was the former mayor’s son. Their doctor advised them that they had overstimulated Donald and he should be placed in an institution.During the first half of the twentieth century, children like Donald were called a string of derogatory labels:Cretin, ignoramus, simpleton, maniac, lunatic, dullard, dunce, demented, derange, schizoid, spastic, feebleminded, and psychotic. Even in Dr. Benjamin Spock’s (1903 – 1998), “The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care,” first published in 1946, he recommended that parents immediately place a Mongolian baby in an institution.For families like Donald’s, sending their child to an institution far from their home created shame, guilt, sorrow, confusion and loss:They sent away their children in secret, and in time, the children themselves became secrets, never to be spoken of again. Mr. and Mrs. Triplett brought Donald back home from the institution and took him to be evaluated by the eminent child psychiatrist Leo Kanner (pronounced “Kahner”; 1894 - 1981) at Johns Hopkins hospital in Maryland.Donald was case number 1 in Kanner’s major work published in 1943, “Autistic Disturbances of Affective Contact.” Dr. Kanner studied eleven cases, 3 girls and 8 boys, he later called autism. ”It was Kanner who identified the two defining traits common to all of them: the extreme preference for aloneness and the extreme need for sameness.” Donald is now 82 years old. The first time I evaluated an autistic child in the 1970s, I met two warm, loving, guilt-ridden parents telling me through their tears about their unresponsive, odd five year old child who didn’t talk and was obsessed with playing with door knobs and hinges. When this child entered my office, he walked past me as if I wasn’t there and went straight to the curtain and began sucking the on the cloth. I was aware that blaming mothers for causing autism --- and other psychiatric disorders --- was the theory many clinicians studied to diagnose and treat autistic children. Bruno Bettelheim (1903 – 1990), a prominent child psychologist, who had a Ph.D. in art history, was a famous clinician who promoted that theory. He wrote and lectured that “refrigerator mothers” raised their children in a climate of emotional frigidity causing autism. Bettelheim recommended a “parentectomy”, taking these autistic children away from their parents and putting them in a therapeutic milieu. Bettelheim founded the Orthogenic School at the University of Chicago as a residential treatment program. I couldn’t square my subsequent many encounters with autistic kids and their parents with the refrigerator mother theory expressed in Bettelheim’s famous book The Empty Fortress. My doubts about this blame the mother theory of autism were reinforced in a yearlong seminar taught by Fritz Redl, a contemporary of Bettelheim, and a brilliant teacher and writer. In this seminar of 8 students, 3 of the students had worked for Bettelheim, whose nickname they said was Bruno Brutalheim --- because of how he treated staff, children and parents. In 1990 Bettelheim committed suicide, his method placing a plastic bag over his head. My thought was he recognized the monstrous damage he inflicted on children and their families with his cockamamie theory and treatment approach to autism. But who can know for sure. Donvan and Zucker uncover the stories of courageous characters who fought against the blame theory of autism. Scientists, sometimes with an autistic child of their own, and parents of autistic kids worked tirelessly to get kids out of institutions, band together to make the education establishment teach autistic kids in public schools, find behavioral treatments that worked, and more.The media did much to broadcast and humanize the life of autistic people For example, the brilliant movie “Rain Main’ told the sensitive story about an autistic man starring Dustin Hoffman (1937 - ); Temple Grandin (1947 - ), the first celebrity autistic adult with a Ph.D. in biological sciences and a professor of animal sciences at Colorado State University wrote best-selling books about growing up with autism and lectures around the world.. A movie about the life of Temple Grandin garnered rave reviews, starring Claire Danes (1979 - ). Oliver Sacks (1933 – 2015), the brilliant neurologist, wrote a book of essays called, “Anthropologist on Mars,” with the title referring to his chapter on Temple Grandin. Along the way there were many missteps among autistic advocacy groups and scientific findings:It was an early harbinger of the tragic tendency of autism advocacy groups, or individuals in them, all supposedly dedicated to the same cause, to turn against one another. It had been there at the beginning, and it would flare up, again and again, to the detriment of the greater cause, in every decade to follow. In 1998, a British physician published a shocking paper in the well-respected Lancet journal claiming that the MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) vaccine may cause autism. The study was eventually discredited, the physician lost his license, but not without significant panic in the community about the safety of giving children vaccines. Many educated people stopped giving their children the MMR vaccines and “measles was becoming active again the United States, with reported infections reaching a twenty –year high in 2014.” Whether we are witnessing a true increase in the autistic population, or whether the definition of autism on a spectrum makes the difference in numbers remains controversial. Because we know so little about the complex etiology of autism, crank, expensive treatments masquerading as science promising quick cures lurk at the doors of progress, waiting to lure parents down the road of danger psychiatric misadventures. Advocacy for autistic children and adults is essential and must be driven by scientists.
