After choosing a career working with electricity, electronics, and computers, I found that in my thirties my health ran down to the point of being put on prescription medication. None of the doctors could tell my why this occurred and they told me that it was a "normal aspect of aging", everyone is the same! I now know that I had a form of radiation sickness that was caused by exposure to the equipment that I was working with, the products that were in my home, and too much sunlight exposure (the Sun is a nuclear reactor!). This is an excellent book that confirmed my own personal findings. Today I have good health that I thought was impossible to achieve a few years ago. Other books that I can also recommend are "Electromagnetic Fields" by B. Blake Levitt and "Health and Light" by Dr. John Nash Ott.

This needed 10 STAR not 5. This gentleman has changed many people's lives. How? I used his treatments in injury of patients, ALL responded. Knee pain which were called total and must be replaced, healed. Carpal tunnels, healed. Shoulders healed...Thank you Dr. BECKER. You have star in heavens.

In the 1960s Robert O. Becker was a prominent orthopedic surgeon and researcher in electrophysiology. He pioneered using electromagnetic energy at various frequencies for pain relief and to help broken bones knit better. In the 1980s he wrote several books, such as "The Body Electric," summarizing his research as well as that of others. Those interested in the field might notice that he was heavily influenced by a Yale professor of the 1930s, Dr. Harold Saxton-Burr who wrote "The Fields of Life."In 1990 he published this book outlining possible avenues for using electromagnetic means to enhance healing. However, the book also is a wake-up call regarding the sea of electromagnetic radiation we live in. He focuses on the un-natural fields and their potential interference with the natural fields we evolved in. The un-natural sources are radio, TV, WiFi, microwaves, cell phones, appliances and a host of other sources. The problem, he claims, is a lack of good research on this radiation which is non-ionizing. We all hear of the dangers of ionizing radiation, for instance from radioactive materials and X-rays (for political as well as scientific reasons), but do not hear much of those electromagnetic fields which have biological effects, because their mechanisms are not well understood. One might feel that this is fringe science, so imagine my surprise in early 2015 to hear news articles regarding well researched studies showing hazardous effects on infants and toddlers from exposure to WiFi. This was basically pointed out by Dr. Becker 30-40 years ago. This just goes to show that what is old becomes new fairly often. It also shows that there is something wrong with a system that takes 30-40 years to take a new look at old research. Dr. Becker also cites some interesting studies and has some thoughts on the relationship of this electromagnetic sea to cancer. Much of it is very convincing.Being an optimist at heart, I think many readers will concentrate on the healing possibilities of electromagnetic techniques. We already are starting to use such techniques as transcranial magnetic stimulation on depression patients. You can see the possibilities in some of Becker's observations. Who knows, someday we might have "healing sarcophagi" like those featured in the movie Star Gate.It may be that research is inhibited by the difficulty of making a profit for the medical complex. It would seem more profitable to make a drug, even if only partly effective. Also, as to the dangers of the unnatural electomagnetic sea we've created, I don't really see much solution. No one is going to turn off radio, TV, WiFi and power lines; and, few want to spend their lives in a Faraday Cage in some cave. That said, I have to say this is an intriguing look at a field too often overlooked. The field is long in the tooth, but young enough to contribute to our welfare. My criticism is that Dr. Becker has covered too much in just one book. The positive opportunities seem overwhelmed by the negative position we are in with scant solution. Nevertheless, if you find this field fascinating, this book is for you. Five Stars.

i loved this book. So many things that I learned. Am getting so into 21st century body therapy. Micro-pollution vs micro therapy. Believe me, electro magnetic therapy works!

Electrical as well as sound and light frequencies can be most useful as well as damaging. Becker does an excellent job of explaining, using fascinating studies to illustrate his concepts. It's time we accept the danger of the frequencies we are using in our environment, from wifi, cell phones, smart meters, now cars that use this technology to communicate with cars around them. Certain frequencies can also be powerful healing tools. Fascinating and useful information in this book.

Dr Robert O Becker was an orthopaedic surgeon who researched cell/limb regeneration and ended up as an expert on the effects of electricity on the body. His work puts a sound scientific basis to the area of electric fields. He was involved in reviewing electronic fields for the military which gave him a unique access to data. This allows him to bring together an interesting range of facts.Hospitals now use a number of devices that are based on his work. One device was patented by Dr Andy Bassett (a student of his) and involved using a magnetic field to speed bone union in fractures.Another device involves inserting 2 electrodes into a bone or wound which is infected (and thus not healing) and using a mild electric current to kill the bacteria. My friend says they did this to him in hospital recently... so it's obviously catching on.A third device is being used in hospitals for cancer: using 2 carbon nanotubes (probes) we can liquify cancer tumours using the electroporesis effect (as documented by Dr Robert Beck a physicist). Beck based his work on Kaali and Lyman... and they based their work on preceding work... which I assume included Becker.A surprising book. Covering topics you don't expect to find mentioned. A book with credibility. A book full of useful facts. A book that advances our knowledge of electronic hazards significantly.Dr Robert O Becker died in 2008... but not before finally patenting a device for regenerating tissue in 1998 ie. the de-differentiation of specialised cells and their re-differentiation into the required tissue. So who needs stem cells? I'm at a loss why this work hasn't been more widely used or cited... and it's not very complicated either... although I suspect that Becker might have left out a bit of detail.Becker did do a little bit more work on healthy magnetic fields that isn't documented here... as he also seems to be behind at least one device to improve cell metabolism (similar to Bassett's idea only for the whole body). The use of electrical stimulation in treating depression and addiction is also an area that is starting to get serious attention eg. refer Dr Meg Patterson (NET) and Dr Robert Beck (Biotuner). Beck gives a fascinating history of this in an audio interview.Electronic fields can have both positive and negative effects on the body... Becker documents both.Unfortunately Becker fails to reference his own work properly... but you can find the references in his 1998 patent. This is not hard reading. Becker keeps it simple. Anyone should have no trouble understanding this.It is a well informed opinion. Much speculation and myth is based on Beckers work. I found Becker originally by trying to track down who people were referencing when they made claims about electromagnetic fields. Most references seem to be refering to Beckers work... so read from the source?Beckers previous book "The body Electric" is probably the book most people cite.If you have to choose between the two... buy the first one... then you'll probably be hooked and buy the second one anyway.:-)

Great read, although there were parts that were so painful, I had to skim a little. Quite similar to the works of Carolyn Jessop. If you are interested in the triumph of the human spirit over extreme adversity, this book is for you

***If you don't already know the story--then this review contains the basic plot spoilers. Also, as of November 22, one of Rebecca's brothers has made some mildly inflammatory comments about this book in a short ebook. Short story--it's sensationalism without any substance over minor details and reads like that of a jealous family member angry at the way he was portrayed. Don't bother purchasing it (for anyone interested--I wrote a detailed review of it)***First things first. This book is not an attack against Mormons, God or even polygamy. And neither is this review. It makes clear distinctions about why the type of FLDS that Warren Jeffs was leading was in fact very different from both Mormonism as well as other forms of Christianity. If I recall--not once does Rebecca even use the word cult--but for the purposes of this review, I am going to. In my opinion, whether it's under the guise of religion or helter skelter--when you have a population of people who are both terrified of as well as essentially worship a singular leader, cut off from the rest of the world, indoctrinated from birth, driving out all those who dare to question, and most importantly creating a system of that greatly disadvantages and mentally stunts a portion of the population so that they are easier to control--that is in fact a cult.I rarely read books like these (although I did greatly enjoy the Susan Atkins' autobiography), but every once in a while I come across a news story that just captures my imagination. I remember seeing news articles when Jeffs was arrested where there was just a lot of controversy about whether or not Jeffs and his congregation of FLDS members were just misunderstood or whether they were in fact criminals. Eventually, during his trial--more evidence came to light that Jeffs was in fact a serial pedophile and abuser not to mention was a total con artist concerning his "religion". Jeffs would preach about abstaining from "worldly sins" but then would use the substantial tithe money to live the very type of life that he preached against. Enough tales of 12 year old brides, rape and systemic corruption emerged that I think eventually the media finally came around to the side of the prosecutors--but some still made the case that Jeffs and his members should have just been left alone.I dare anyone who thinks that to read this book. It's clear that even the prison terms that Jeffs and several high ranking members received was only just the tip of the iceberg. This book is positively heartbreaking. Told through the eyes of Rebecca Musser, this books gives a gripping perspective into the tragedy of the Warren Jeffs era FLDS.Rebecca starts with her traumatic childhood of her siblings and mother forced to live in a dark basement and abused by her father's first wife. The physical and emotional trauma she received in this house was in no way merely a form of physical discipline. This was not spanking a child carefully--this was full on bloody beatings from the first wife to the point of organ failure in the case of one of her beloved brothers, sexual molestation from a half brother, and grievous mental and emotional abuse. Rebecca makes it clear though, that at least in her mind---she viewed this as unusual and not the norm for all polygamous families. She makes it clear that child abuse is not a necessary byproduct of bigamy--though she did see reoccurring jealousy leading to violence or passive forms of aggression repeatedly in in first/second/third/etc... wife relationships.Something that was surprising to me though, was the realization that the FLDS movement was much more like the Amish than cult like towards the beginning of the book. While I would disagree with many if not all of their views, the FLDS church was not always synonymous with human trafficking and child rape. It seems it used to have a more democratic (though barely) structure not to mention didn't seek to wholly cut off their children from the outside world. Rebecca even attended a normal school up until somewhere in elementary I believe. Unlike many in the church, her father was a highly educated engineer who clearly passed on his mental acuity and passion for knowledge to Rebecca. It seems things honestly didn't reach the point of outright major law breaking (for the greater organization--certainly Rebecca and her siblings would have all been taken away and her parents put in jail if authorities were aware of the child abuse) until maybe the late 90s early 00s.What changed things was Warren Jeffs. He had taken over the "school" system and little by little chipped away at whatever real knowledge these kids had and replaced it with a systematic indoctrination of both the church, himself, "sexual purity"/total submission of women and how evil the rest of the "Gentile" world was. When his father (the revered yet lecherous Prophet who Rebecca was married off to at 19 and he 85) became sick, he took over the main religious not to mention purse strings of the cult. When his father died, Jeffs began a systematic purge of all those who opposed him as well as rewarding young and younger girls as wives to those who backed his rise to power. When Jeffs started to pressure the sister wives of his father--specifically Rebecca--into marrying him, this was the moment when Rebecca found the courage to escape the compound as she was absolutely sickened and terrified of Jeffs. In the time Rebecca left and the time Jeffs was finally arrested--it's clear that things just got worse. Just because these young brides weren't chained physically, they might as well have been. When you have virtually zero education, poor communication skills and own zero property to your name, you really don't have a choice. It's either leave (provided you aren't dragged back like many girls were) or marry. Neither of which is a fair choice. And many boys were also either raped or sent off to work in almost chain gain like conditions for various construction FLDS owned companies if they showed the slightest sign of mere hesitation or rebellion. As she became increasingly aware of just how great some of the lies told to her were, not to mention broken over the unknown fates of her biological younger sisters--she began a relentless yet cautious effort to locate her littlest sisters who she was concerned had been forced into marriage. Eventually, as the federal and state governments began to make a case against Jeffs and senior members of the church--they called upon Rebecca to help them. At great emotional and psychological harm to herself and her marriage, Rebecca slowly started helping the authorities build a case against these members. Eventually, she became the star and fearless witness in a series of trials which eventually ended up in prison sentences for Jeffs and other members. She symbolically wore red during her testimony in Jeffs trial, a moment of defiance as Jeffs had banned the color red from ever being worn in the FLDS church. While emotionally difficult to read, I do want to make it clear that this book was incredibly riveting. I knew the ending, I knew Rebecca had survived, I knew Jeffs was arrested and sentenced to life--and yet this was genuinely more tense and gripping than several thrillers I've read recently. All credit to Rebecca as well as Bridget Cook (co-author) for masterful storytelling.Part of what made this book so powerful to me is that it's not a rant. It's not a pity party. It's not even about how heroic Rebecca was--which she unquestionably was. It's clear the journey Rebecca went through was gradual and that she often felt hopelessly alone and not in control. And yet, with each little decision she made--she got one step closer and closer to not just freedom for herself but many of her siblings and others. Her steely determination and self respect is what saved her. And that's an incredibly empowering message.I would highly recommend this book to anyone simply curious about the history and insight into the world of the Jeffs era FLDS, as well as young girls. One of the many powerful ideas from this book that has really stuck with me--is that Rebecca didn't know she had the choice to respect herself. She had been taught that she was nothing except a body in which to sexually and otherwise serve the whims of the men in charge. And it was the moment that she realized that she was special that she was able to start questioning what she saw around her.Emotional, visceral, enlightening and riveting--this book can help you see the world a little bit clearer. Highly recommend.*********Promised myself I wasn't going to write any more--but ended up buying and reading the book by Rebecca's little sister Elissa who had been married off at 14 to a first cousin and repeatedly raped. I don't want to take anything away from her story--but the perspective here is wholly different. Elissa was a kid and relaid her story through the eyes of a kid--and tho Rebecca wasn't much older, she had much more knowledge and an awareness of what was actually happening due to her status as the elder Prophet's wife. Honestly, Rebecca is also simply a much better writer. Essentially, this book is much more detailed and provides a better perspective of the entire FLDS situation.

Rebecca Musser wrote The Witness Wore Red, the story of the final days of freedom for Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS) cult leader Warren Jeffs. Published in 2013 and ably co-authored by M. Bridget Cook, The Witness Wore Red takes the reader inside a very secretive and paranoid society. There is a depressing similarity to these FLDS tell-all books. A woman grows up in a polygamous household, marries too young to an older man she doesn’t love, leaves the FLDS community and is eventually forced to assimilate into the outside world she had been trained since infancy to distrust. At some point, she can mentally and physically separate from the FLDS community, carves out a new life for herself and her children, eventually collaborates on a book and can be found giving speeches on YouTube alongside Yonder Mountain String Band concerts and basketball dunks. You expect this highly dysfunctional, uber-patriarchal society to collapse under the weight of its own hypocrisy at any time, but it never does. The Witness Wore Red shines an unflattering spotlight on Rulon Jeffs, the FLDS "prophet," and his conniving, evil son, Warren, who would ascend to the throne upon Rulon’s death. Despite an age gap of over 60 years, Musser became the 19th “wife” of the senior (very senior) Jeffs. As Ms. Musser assimilates, there are re-occurring tensions between her and her new husband – he wants Rebecca to be the dutiful, “keep sweet” wife and mother; she wants to sell real estate and assist government authorities in Texas attempting to dismantle a FLDS compound. For additional insights into the FLDS culture, readers may wish to consult Jon Krakauer’s excellent work on Mormon fundamentalism, Under the Banner of Heaven. Krakauer’s book provides a historical perspective that Musser’s book lacks. Other FLDS works include Escape, co-authored by Carolyn Jessop, and Stolen Innocence, co-authored by Elissa Wall (Musser’s biological sister). These books are inspiring in a perverse sort of way, especially to those of us who face daily challenges a lot less daunting than the ones tackled head-on by ex-FLDS members. They highlight an underrated trait in 21st century America: resiliency.

This book touches the heart. It’s hard to wrap your mind around all the complexities Rebecca Musser endured growing up in the fundamentalist LDS church (FLDS). Noble ideals, like faith and endurance, are hopelessly entangled in a web of human faults of the darkest kind. Years of indoctrination in the FLDS faith prepare women to accept subjugation of every kind. Teenage Rebecca is forced to become the nineteenth wife of the eighty-five-year-old prophet of the FLDS church. At his death, given no other option but to marry again, Rebecca knows the time has come to leave.Though she escapes, Rebecca carries heavy burdens. Her younger sisters, open to exploitation, are never far from her thoughts. Knowing those left behind are being beaten and assaulted, Rebecca makes a decision that will forever change the lives of everyone she’s known and loved. She takes the stand to testify against the men who have subjected those she loves. In that decision, she is forever changed.I read The Witness Wore Red because I have deep respect for Bridget Cook, who worked with Rebecca to bring this book to life. They present this world like none else can. Reading this book is a transformative experience, promoting a deeper understanding of the world we live in and our power to change it.--Kate Calina

This is a terrific book for anyone interested in the mind of the extreme explorer, or those interested in how our knowledge of the arctic developed. In the early twentieth century Ernest Leffingwell served as a scientist on several expeditions of the arctic (including one so badly managed it seems astonishing that they survived). He was one of the first to explore what is now the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and helped determine that there is no land at the north pole. The book includes excerpts from his journals and many illustrations, including color photographs by the author.

I'm the sucker here- this was aggressively marketed to me due to my search history. Some descent info and insights for beginners exploring evolutionary psch, buddhism, etc. I was a bit disturbed by dualistic, atheistic approach and very short-sighted, under- researched views on mental health, spiritualism and diet. Particularly disturbed by total lack of respect given to value of human social connections and families and fact that 95% references to women included sexual innuendo. Another book in disturbing trend from privileged neo-liberals to use Buddhism and pop-science to justify pursuit of self-absorbed, individualistic, atheistic lifestyles. May Jevan continue to question, awaken and find peace and freedom from suffering and delusion.

A lot of books you read, especially self-help books, make you excited for about three weeks and then slowly but surely you find yourself right back where you started – doing the same ordinary routine, looking for the next tidbit of wisdom to get your juices flowing again. Not this one. This book will resonate long after you’ve finished. The stories illuminate, the ideas are clearly explained, and from as early as page 20, you’ll start reconsidering your life choices.I’ve spent an unhealthy portion of my life cynical about happiness, walking around with an argument stuck in my head. This book pulled me out of that. I don’t know if I’ll go back to that, but it’s been three weeks already, and I’m still meditating, still thinking positively, and still challenging my thoughts. Not too shabby.

I wanted to like this book, I was hoping for a fresh take on some unoriginal ideas. As an anthropology major, it was difficult to read some of the anecdotes that the author is trying to correlate with causation. I realize this isn't a textbook, but still, the sweeping, oversimplified, and almost problematic ideas posited by the author are almost laughable at times. Sprinkled throughout, there are so many derogatory references to women, I honestly can't believe this book in this form was approved by an editor. I sincerely feel the author didn't mean to purposefully come across this way, but that is almost shocking because it's so diametrically opposed to some of the bigger concepts in his own writing. I'm not a prude by any means, but the remarks and stories seem to serve no literary purpose, reminded me of high school locker room talk. I don't normally read many reviews prior to reading a book, but this was so bad, I couldn't wait to find out if my opinion was in the minority, thankfully, others seem to agree. If the topics in this book interest you, there are many many better examples to be found. Sadly, this is a poorly researched, watered down, juvenile attempt at trying to explain some honestly good concepts, it really doesn't do them the justice they deserve.

The most exciting thing about this book is its process of steering one's attention towards pragmatic buddhist meditation practice. Many people lead physically healthy and nutritious lifestyles but make little to no time for their mental well-being. I imagine this book will bridge that gap for a lot of people. You may be frustrated to learn (as I was) the reasons why many of our physical and mental illnesses were virtually non-existent in the bodies of our hunter-gatherer ancestors. And you thought it was purely genetics!Traditional dogmatic buddhist or highly sensitive politically correct readers may sneer at Pradas' relaxed approach and his casual yet witty sexual references. This book isn't for you. But! You should read it, don't bother wasting time on the trolling review and send it to a friend or family member who might live a better life and gain some understanding into why you spend so much time on the cushion.

Addresses modern problems that need to be examined but way too many often unrealistic stories about how happy our hunter gatherer ancesters must have been. Seriously, a tribe was laughing when they saw their huts get blown away in a storm. Also Pliny the historian was greek? Please. Like I said, modern society has a boatload of systemic problems as shown but the high substance and suicide epidemics, but this book just doesn't really do it.

Jevan, the author, tells several fascinating stories of how some humans used to live to feel powerful wellness, happiness, and peace. These stories include accounts of the social customs of modern and historical hunter-gatherer tribes and how they differ sharply from similar customs in modern Life.Reading this book alone has filled me with awe and appreciation for what a truly fulfilled life can feel like, and the the advice and discussion he has up to the very last page is all the info needed to get there.

I won’t spoil any of he details, but this book wasn’t the ultimate bait and switch. A good portion of it was no surprise, as I study a lot of evolutionary biology. However, the second half of the book was an amazing ultimate change of discussion. It is BEYOND worth the read.Even as someone who knows much of the info in this book as both a pro-paleo diet advocate and meditator, it still gave me some interesting insight into some information that I had not realized. All can say is, read it. Some will get more from it than others, but still a fantastic book.

I don't know if his anthropological take on hunter gatherers is that salient. I think it's overly romanticized. And it's always suspect when the theme is leaving civilization to make contact with the noble savage. Whether that simple and benevolent society is healthier than not. Leave them alone. With that said, the personal voyage that the author takes with his curiosity and honesty is valuable. The way he weaves a way of life through his insights, travels and dialogues with masters and novices is inspiring. I've read the book nearly everyday. Towards the back of the book are action items on meditation. There is the challenge. Let me get to the work of quieting my mind, eating for joy and living in ecstasy. Then I'll follow up with another review. In the end that's what's great about the book. He's asking you to try something, not to believe it. Do it.

Your jaw will be on the floor the entire time you're reading this book. It disposes of the dry expository style of most works of medieval history and instead takes on the narrative style of a novel. The unexpected twists of fate, spycraft, betrayals, assassinations, battlefield ingenuity, and unlikely alliances that make up the various kingdoms and city-states of the Middle East are laid out in a way where you'll genuinely get invested in these "characters" of history. You'll find yourself holding out hope that this time they'll stop the mysterious Frankish hordes, or rooting for Damascus over Aleppo or Acre over Jerusalem, only to suddenly have that hope smashed against the wall by marauding Turkish prince or a hashish-smoking Assassin from Iran.At the same time, Maalouf keeps his story completely based in hard research into *Arabic* primary sources of the time period, which is something only a tiny minority of the foremost "experts" on Middle Eastern history today ever even bother with. He maintains his credibility as a historian yet shows incredible prowess as a storywriter, seamlessly citing inline while encouraging the reader to be skeptical where appropriate. Writers like Ibn al-Athir become characters in and of themselves, contextualized into their own time periods and priorities as writers. Eurocentricity never once makes an appearance, keeping true to the title of the book by keeping you as informed or in-the-dark about the Europe of this period as the Muslims were then. Maalouf doesn't fall into a single racist trope about fanatical Muslims or anachronistic ideas of ethno-religious identity, ever the easy escape of the lazy Middle East expert. He does the hard work of showing you with hard fact the precise political motivations of every little prince of every little city, painting a beautiful picture of the region and time period that will leave you wishing for a TV adaptation of his work.

I have many books over the years regarding this subject and this is one of my favorites due to Amin Maalouf's outstanding organization and approach (six part chronology book) to this important time period. If you are not a student of the Levant Crusades you will be confused and bored with this book. Maalouf provides insight from the Arab chroniclers of the time to describe the mood and thoughts of rulers and peoples of the Levant during this time.Much of this history exposed to westerners is via writings from a Christian clergyman and 12th-century Levantine historian, William of Tyre. I would highly recommend the reader watching “The History Channel DVD, The Crusades” to obtain comprehension of this dynamic period of time. Here one gets to view the actors portraying William of Tyre and the Arab chroniclers of Ibn al-Qalanisi and Ibn al-Athir to obtain their emotions to various events that occur. This study offers much insight into the historical forces and factions of this time that even today shape Islamic disposition and consciousness. The reader needs to understand the Muslims took 88 years to ejected the westerners from their land in the 12th Century. They are looking for the new Salah al-Din Yusuf to come along in the next seventeen years to eject the Zionists. My only comment would be need of maps to illustrate areas of influence of Christians and Muslims during the periods discussed. I wish I had written this book.

It is an interesting read and presents a cohesive account of the crusades in the first few chapters. Then it gets boring when it starts talking about bits and pieces about several characters and events that are very shallowly defined. After the one third of the book, It gets so boring and uninteresting, I found myself asking “so what, what is the point, what are you trying to say....?” Then I got frustrated and just gave up. I just got the impression that the writer doesn’t really know the topic or what he is really trying to convey. I love his other books, this one was definitely a disappointment. This book is a lot about the childish competition and conflict between local Arabic and Turkish figures, more than about the Crusades. Nothing changed in Middle East in 1000 years.

Amin Maalouf gets the job done in presenting how Arabs( being Muslim, Christian, Jewish) viewed the coming of the Crusades and what it meant to them. What was interesting while reading this book was how diverse this conflict was with the various factions amongst the Christian and Muslim forces.I feel that this book is a must because it shows a different side to the conflict that people tend to not consider while examining the crusades.I feel this book can be paralleled to how Arabs view todays conflicts amongst Sunni/Shia, and Arab Israeli conflicts. I feel it is critical to understand both perspectives in conflicts because it enables more understanding amongst people in volatile regions such as the middle east.

This book fulfills its promise of an alternative perspective on the crusades based on the surviving Eastern primary source material. The author does an excellent job of composing an engaging and complete narrative from the sources while keeping in touch with the intent and biases of the underlying material. Recurring themes include:- The fragmented state of the Middle East during the time of the crusades- How Muslims viewed the crusades, the crusader states, and Western leaders- Diplomatic and trade interaction between East and West- The complicated mix of religious and secular drivers for Jihad- Conflicting and complex motives of principal Muslim rulers

Chaos Choreography (InCryptid), by Seanan McGuire

From Publishers Weekly

For the fifth installment of her InCryptid series (following Pocket Apocalypse), McGuire revisits cryptozoologist Verity Price, last seen as a primary character in 2013's Midnight Blue-Light Special. When Verity's alter ego, professional ballroom dancer Valerie Pryor, receives an invitation to appear in a special all-star season of the reality show Dance or Die, which made her briefly famous, she accepts in order to give her dancing days the closure they deserve. With her husband and a contingent of Aeslin mice in tow, Verity dons Valerie's wig and heads back to Los Angeles. Then someone starts ritually murdering eliminated contestants, and Verity has to maintain her secret identity and continue to compete even as she and her allies investigate the supernatural killings. McGuire skillfully skewers the reality show mindset as she infuses it with urban fantasy tropes and a blend of humor and action. As always, the cryptids— some drawn from myth, others original to the setting—are entertaining in their own right, . It's great to see Verity in action, and this tale sets the stage for many more exciting adventures. Agent: Diana Fox, Fox Literary. (Mar.)\n

Review

Praise for the InCryptid series:"The only thing more fun than an October Daye book is an InCryptid book. Swift narrative, charm, great world-building...all the McGuire trademarks." —Charlaine Harris, #1 New York Times-bestselling author of the Sookie Stackhouse series"[Half-Off Ragnarok] is kind of like taking a tour through a very deadly theme park made up of alternating parts awesome and terrifying. Come to think of it, that sums up this series quite nicely.... This book effectively acts as a jumping-on point to those just coming in." —Tor.com "Half-Off Ragnarok is my favorite book in the InCryptid series thus far.... If urban fantasy, intriguing animals, and fast-paced adventure is your thing, you’re going to love Half-Off Ragnarok. Highly recommended." —Jennifer Brozek"McGuire creates a sense of wonder and playfulness with her love for mythology and folklore.... Her enthusiastic and fast-paced style makes this an entertaining page-turner." —Publishers Weekly"A funny, fast-paced and genuinely suspenseful adventure that is sure to engross and entertain.... There is still a wide world for the intrepid Price family to explore, much to readers' guaranteed delight." —RT Reviews"While chock-full of quality worldbuilding, realistic characters, and a double helping of sass, at its core, Half-Off Ragnarok is a book about judging others according to stereotypes, how nurture can overcome nature, and the importance of family." —Ranting Dragon

Enjoyable, fun, easy to read, all yes. But, the character development continues to lag, with continuing reliance on the Price of the week, plus the Aeslin mice (a big plus to be sure), plus a cast of guest stars, most of whom seem interchangable - not something you see in her "October Daye" series, her "Velveteen vs." collections, or her "Indexing" serials. Ms. McGuire also may have a bit of an unacknowledged problem with the denouement this time around. The Covenant seems to be what folks are worried about, but with the body count, and worse, the visibility of the body count, the Covenant may be the least of the Prices' worries. Frankly, if I were a cryptid (and maybe I am, you never know), I'd be thinking, "with friends like these...". I will continue to read (and buy) future installments, because they ARE fun and light; but, I'm worried that Ms. McGuire's heart (or at least her focus) may not be in this series. This makes two 3-star episodes in a row, by my reckoning, and that's unheard of for her. She does give a nice shout out to Daniel Abraham's excellent Dagger and Coin series, so that's a plus.

Wow was I happy to be back with Verity, even though I really liked Alex’s PoV too I have a great time with Verity. I was a little sorry that I didn’t read a few of the road trip free stories available from Seanan Mcguire’s website here before starting this but don’t worry I read them right after so I would have all the details of the 4+ month road trip to get back to Oregon.Verity and Dominic are living with her family and while they are not nearly as bad as Shelby’s family was to Alex I couldn’t help but feel a little bad that Dominic is still trying to prove himself worthy to join their ranks. This book started out a little slow for me and when Verity is given the opportunity to enter a dance competition as her alter ego Valerie…I’m not going to lie I groaned internally. But let me put your fears to rest. IT WAS AWESOME. And the reason it was awesome is because of her back up ALICE.Yep this book took off when Grandma Alice showed up. She is the only member of the family to have 2 congregations of mice following her. But that is what happens when you are close to 80 but look 25 because you are an interdimensional bounty hunter trying to find your husband who was sucked into some vortex 60ish years ago. She is fantastic in this and I love her and Verity hanging out together. Especially since if anyone is going to understand turning and marrying an ex-covenant boy it is her.*** Grandma Alice isn’t a free-runner; like most of my family, she views my tendency to throw myself off tall buildings as just short of suicidal, although—being her—she also found it sort of adorable. When your grandmother with no sense of self-preservation thinks you’re being cute, maybe it’s time to reconsider your life choices. ***Okay so Verity is going to give Valerie (her dance alter ego) one more change in the spot light and then it will be time to tie off the loose ends and kill her off. So she is just going to enjoy the moment and dance for the fun of it but then she finds a few of the voted off contestants dead and that changes everything because someone is trying to call a snake god forth.*** (I don’t have much experience with gods, and I don’t want much experience with gods, since people who meet gods tend to wind up pregnant with demigods. Not my idea of a good time.) ***Since the stakes have just been raised the family decides that Verity needs a little extra back up and who better than Grandma Alice. After Alice showed up I couldn’t put the book down. It was intense, fast and fun. Plus there were the mice and as always I love the mice and their sayings and rituals.*** “Hail to Verity, the Arboreal Priestess, bride to the God of Hard Choices in Dark Places,” it squeaked. “Today begins the great feast of Dammit, Enid, Where Is That Girl, I Know She Tells You When She’s Sneaking Out. We have come to beg a re-creation.” I was still partially asleep, and it took me a moment to remember which holiday they were talking about. “Wait—isn’t this the one where Grandma Alice got lost in the woods for almost a whole day, and then wound up at Grandpa Thomas’ house for the first time?” ***I adore that as the books go one the mice get more and more page time and get to do more things to help out. I find them one of the best parts of this series. The ending surprised me, like really surprised me and wow is really all I can say without giving anything away. I didn’t see the series heading in that direction but I’m pretty sure that whatever happens next is going to be just great.A few other things of interest.- Another clan of Dragon Princesses that need something from Verity.- cute Ghoul children at play- A shark shifter that can walk on land- Routewitches- A fight with a giant Snake God.- chupacabra- AND newlywed Verity and Dominic. (so totally cute)

I was eagerly looking forward to reading this book after spending the last two with Alex Price, though I thoroughly enjoyed both Alex-centric stories. I have to say, this book was not at all what I expected, much to my disappointment. For most of the book, it seemed to flip-flop between a cheesy romance novel and a reality TV show. The long, long passages describing the petty fights of the participants in the dance competition, Verity's love of dance and her associated identity crisis, and every grueling detail of the competition had me skipping pages. Skipping pages is something I do with books from my subscription service; I never skip pages on paid copies but this was just too painful not to. I kept waiting for something - anything - to happen that was interesting. I'd say things picked up towards the last 1/3 in a big way, but why did it take so long to get there? Even the Aeslin mice, as wildly adorable as they are, couldn't redeem this one for me (though i threw in an extra star just for them).

While I enjoyed returning to the world of Verity (because her brother was a fairly dull protagonist), this book just didn't cut it. Everything started out well by reintroducing us to our plucky heroine and her paramour, and I always have and always will love hearing about the Aeslin mice. They are awesome. But while the underlying story started well (interesting concept and an interesting setting, particularly for those of us who have watched more than one season of "So You Think You Can Dance"), the story just disintegrated toward the end. The author went back to the well to use the same type of villain that she's already done, and the ending felt more like a bad episode of Scooby Doo. The big reveal involved players that were either completely random or way too predictable, and none that gave that sense of "a-ha" that the reader should get when he/she realized that the author had been dropping hints all along. So rather than using the unique setting and an interesting protagonist to launch a new adventure, it felt like we were just given something we'd already consumed on a new plate.

Praise for Acts of GodActs of God offers practical, biblical answers for life's toughest questions. With a seasoned pastor's heart and a masterful grasp of Scripture, Bob Russell guides us through the life of Joseph, adding here-and-now stories to bring each point home. I was moved, challenged, encouraged, and convicted. No pat answers or Christian cliches here: Acts of God speaks the truth, wrapped in God's mercy and love.Liz Curtis Higgs, bestselling author of Bad Girls of the Bible and The Girl's Still Got ItI never refuse an opportunity to read the words of Bob Russell. He is a humble, wise and gifted teacher. I receive this book with great excitement!Max Lucado, pastor and New York Times bestselling authorBob Russell is simply one of the most gifted, faithful, and amazing pastors I have ever known. This book is just one example of what has made him such an effective preacher, teacher, and guide: he knows how to bring the Bible into everyday life, and in this book he brilliantly does so through the example of Joseph. This book will be of great assistance to every Christian at every stage of life because it is established in eternal truth and in its enduring power. Dr. R. Albert Mohler Jr., President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Bob Russell was our pastor for eight years. Everything we admired most about him is evident in this book. It is honest: the difficult questions of life are faced head-on without sentimentality or fluff. It is biblical: godly wisdom leaps from every page. It is practical: Russell offers concrete advice to help us overcome temptation and endure testing. It is hopeful: I finished the book with tears of praise and gratitude for a God who is faithful, who loves us and who will never let us go. Rebecca Manley Pippert, author of Out of the Saltshaker and Love Has its Reasons Trusting God through every situation and season in life is a difficulty we all face. How are we to know how and why God acts when we don’t understand? Bob Russell takes on the toughest of these challenges with wisdom and grace, and offers a clear perspective for finding a lasting faith. This is a great book! It is as old as Job and has been asked throughout every generation. In Acts of God, Bob shows how God’s hand was at work throughout the life of Joseph amid the prideful immaturity and alluring enticements of youth, the pain of rejection and unjust suffering, the subtle temptations of power and success, and the sobering realities of aging and preparing for death. I gave this four stars because, to me, it's good but not great. To be sure, my expectations concerning a treatment of theodicy and the goals of this book may not coincide.I was searching for an answer to the question, why is God silent or inactive when mean people attack the innocent. Maybe a little of that near the end of the book. Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed the way he weaved a study of Joseph into every chapter, and I got some great ideas from that, BUT, there are those in church who struggle with the issue of the innocent suffering and I cannot suggest this book as a resource.

One of the best books I've ever read. My husband has cancer and has suffered so greatly, this book has given us much needed wisdom which strengthens us. I will keep this book and re-read it always. Sometimes truth is hard to swallow but non the less it is truth and with that a Peace follows. Thank you Bob Russell.

There is so much pain because every action has a reaction. My 14 year old son was killed by an automobile . He was in the highway at a spot which the driver did not see in time to stop. My question, or perhaps my dilemma is 'can God's presence bring solace in the agony of the loss of my son?' And the answer for me is 'yes'. He does not ask me not to grieve, but holds me close to His heart as I grieve. This book leads me through the history of God's faithful action through thousands of years of His continual presence in both tragedy and triumph. Thank you Pastor Russell for your testimony.

We did the study based on the movie and book "Acts of God" in our men's bible study group. The analogies based on the story of Joseph hit some major struggles of trials we endure in the modern day. Highly recommend the book and the study. The movie is very moving and well worth watching.

Great book with good material for small group discussion. Lots of deep quesiton discussion and the way it uses the life of Joseph to parallel is solid! NOTE: I wouldn't use the Travelers guide with it. It is really confusing and hard to follow. .

Acts of God is a book about suffering and answers a big question: why do some things happen/why would God allow this? I would recommend watching the movie and reading this book.

Enjoyed this book thoroughly; really gave me a clear perspective on God's love for us.

I liked the movie better than the book
