Evolution and Contextual Behavioral Science: An Integrated Framework for Understanding, Predicting, and Influencing Human Behavior, by Steven C. Hayes

Review

“The best ideas seem simple and obvious in retrospect. What, for example, could be simpler or more obvious than the principle of ‘selection by consequences?’And yet, when Darwin applied this ‘simple and obvious’ principle to phenotypic variation, we got natural selection, biology’s biggest idea. Then, about one hundred years later, Skinner applied the same principle and gave us behavior analysis; a view of learning (among other things) that still has no serious explanatory rival in psychology. With this volume, David Sloan Wilson and Steven Hayes have assembled chapters by some of the most creative and rigorous minds in their respective disciplines. Their collective efforts offer an updated and elaborated account of these two big ideas, making clear along the way what only now—in retrospect—seems so simple and obvious: that Evolution and Contextual Behavioral Science are scientific sprouts off the same conceptual root.”—James Coan, PhD, professor at the University of Virginia (James Coan, PhD)“This is a remarkable and unique volume that will likely start a paradigm shift in the behavioral sciences. Edited by the foremost leaders in their respective fields, David Sloan Wilson and Steven C. Hayes assembled a fascinating collection of chapters to derive a framework for understanding and changing human behavior. If Skinner and Darwin had been asked to write a book together after further developing their ideas, this would have been the one. Evolution and Contextual Behavioral Science will change the way you think about humans.”—Stefan G. Hofmann, PhD, professor in the department of psychological and brain sciences at Boston University (Stefan G. Hofmann, PhD)“The human mind is different from all other animals because of our cognitive abilities. It has given rise to extraordinary cultures both good and bad, to cooperation, language, art, science, and medicine but also war, slavery, factory farming, and the enjoyment of violence. The key to understanding how the human mind works requires an understanding of its evolved functional motives and competencies, and their contextual phenotypic organization. What nature prepares us with, our social niche grows, patterns, and choreographs. This volume brings together two of the world’s outstanding and leading exponents on both dimensions, the evolved nature of mind and the contextual choreographies of mind, partly but not only through language. Together this range of contributors provide a fascinating and scholarly set of writings with the focus to integrate and cross-fertilize these two bodies of scientific investigation. Together they take a deep dive into the link between nature and culture. It’s a must-read for anybody interested in this fundamental analysis of the human condition.”—Paul Gilbert, OBE, PhD, is professor in the department of psychology at the University of Derby, and author of Human Nature and Suffering and The Compassionate Mind (Paul Gilbert, OBE, PhD)

#370,247 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This book attempts to reintegrate two fields of study, Evolution and Contextual Behavioral Science, that have been critical of each other since the beginning. The editors did this by asking well-known experts in each field to write a paper on a specific topic (e.g. learning, language, emotions, etc) without either person knowing of the other then having those same authors read each the other's paper, then having a conversation moderated by the editors of this book; those conversations were made into compact dialogues that were included into the book along with the papers. This book is very much an academic book, and therefore the writing is inaccessible, and dry, to anyone who does not have a background in either field. That being said, I learned a lot from this book and I would recommend it to anyone with interest in either field.

This should have been available when I was writing my Project Paper six years ago, but even I know that to wish for all that is like calling the sun out on shining. This book is an ideal read for anyone who is interested in behavioral science and most of all, in the endless possibilities research provide us today. I requested to read this book off NetGalley because one, I wanted to show off to my friend that I knew a thing or two about new trends in BS and she knew so little about ES. The other one was to add onto what I knew. The first reason worked in my favor, I am still working on the second one.

I guess it's a little bit silly to declare in a review of Book 4A that I'm a big fan of the Song of Ice and Fire. After all, why else would one have waded through 3,000+ pages? In fact, I felt Book 3 was perhaps the best installment to date. Perhaps it was for this reason that I was so bitterly disappointed with A Feast For Crows. Having read many of the other reviews, I can only repeat what many others have already cited as its most glaring deficiencies. Most obvious, how can an author pen 1,000 pages of prose that fail to advance the already 3,000 page storyline even a little bit (with the possible exception of the Iron born). Two of the most intriguing threads, Tyrion and Daenerys, do not even make an appearance. It is only at the conclusion of the book that this is explained and very poorly so."The more I thought about that, however, the more I felt that the readers would be better served by a book that told ALL THE STORY FOR HALF THE CHARACTERS, RATHER THAN HALF THE STORY FOR ALL THE CHARACTERS". MartinALL THE STORY? Did anyone else get all the story? Instead, he arbitrarily ends the story for these characters no further along than when he started. And we must wait for another partial installment featuring the characters of most interest. And what choice do we have? We've already invested in over 4,000 pages of reading.Even more troubling is that Book 4B will not even address the numerous cliffhangers left from Book 4A, most specifically Arya and Brienne. Book 5 will not likely be published until after 2010. How many will remember the background for these characters at that time (or will Martin spend 250 pages bringing us back up to speed).I can distinctly recall thinking that with writing as good as Martin's, storyline resolution was not even necessary. Book 4A has proven me wrong. Excellent writing that leads nowhere soon becomes frustrating. Martin has disrespected his readers with this obvious cash grab. But again, I feel trapped after putting in the effort to read the first four installments.

This one is not the best in the series. Unfortunately, the author seems to delight in killing off the most memorable characters. Further, in this novel, the author deliberately tries to confuse the reader as to who the characters are. Sansa and Arrya both repeatedly take fake names and suddenly the chapters refer to them that way. Then the author introduces a gaggle of pretty forgettable new characters. All of this serves to make this installment only good, not great (as were the first three).Make no mistake, this is still a novel worth reading and I am still captured by the whole Game of Thrones saga. But the author could have done much better and that makes this one frustrating. RJB.

I was pleasantly surprised by this fourth installment of the “Game of Thrones” series. It picks up the pace after previous installments dragged with various characters’ endless wanderings. The story line deviates from that of the TV series enough to make it fresh even if you watch the latter. I spent time checking maps and websites to firm up my understanding of what went by in a blur on TV.This series is too long by half. Martin unnecessarily draws out scenes involving minor characters, and constantly introduces avoidable new ones. The cast of characters is so long it occupies nearly 10 percent of this volume. Martin has managed, though, to create a whole world, one even wider and more developed than Tolkien’s Middle Earth, and in its many shades of gray more realistic and adult than the latter. I must credit him.I found, say, a chapter on Arya’s wandering through Braavos, selling shellfish to many as she gathers information, to be quite evocative and beautiful. Martin could have covered this episode in her saga in a few paragraphs, but instead took a longer and more artistic option, and the result is quite lovely. This story begins after Tyrion Lannister murders his father Tywin and flees. His sister Cersei Lannister, still Regent but now in charge with her powerful father gone, needs a new Hand to replace him. Her brother Jaime won’t take it, earning her resentment, and catalyzing a growing rift between the two.For Jaime’s own part he’s jealous over the infidelities of his twin, whom he incestuously loves. Others turn her down too. Cersei is fun to read, but truly an evil queen. We don’t dismiss her, though, because the theme of this vicious game is what it takes to seize power and hold it, and what happens to those who lose. Our world isn’t that different, and we have to ask ourselves, if we were in Cersei’s place, might we make the same choices? Not wanting Jaime around, Cersei sends him north to secure the huge, strategic Harrenhal castle and to take Riverrun, where the last Tully brother holds out. The TV series didn’t develop the siblings’ growing alienation as much, or Jaime’s realization of the monster his sister is becoming.Sansa and Littlefinger hole up at the Eyrie. Sansa must keep a secret - that Littlefinger murdered his bride Lisa Arryn - and deceive Arryn bannermen, suspicious of this newly arrived usurper. Sansa sees the depth of Littlefinger’s corruption: he murdered Lisa to protect Sansa, but had planned to all along to seize power over the fief.Arya arrives in Braavos, finds the House of Black and White, and finally wins their trust enough to begin training as an assassin. She is ordered to eradicate every trace of her former self, but nurtures deep down her secret dream of revenge.Sam endures a harrowing voyage south to shelter Gilly and her baby with Sam’s family. They lay over in Braavos, where Sam encounters Arya without either realizing their connection through Jon Snow. They are stranded when the Night Watch’s aged maester they accompany - one of the last of the royal Targaryens - is too sick to go on. Sam gloms to Gilly’s tragic secret as he searches desperately to get to Oldtown and the Citadel. In the Iron Islands, with Balon Greyjoy dead, a new king must be chosen by the people. Balon’s niece Asha throws her hat in, but too few ironborn will accept a woman leader. Another of Balon’s brothers, now high priest, desperately tries to stop another brother, the wicked Euron - whom readers know murdered Balon - from becoming king. A third brother contends but doesn’t have Euron’s ability to sway a crowd. The TV show had Asha’s brother Theon involved here, but in the book he’s been MIA for a couple of volumes.Brienne roams the riverlands searching for Sansa, trying not to name and thus endanger her. Brienne must endure men resentful of a woman knight, including Sam’s nasty father Randyll Tarly, who’s scouring outlaws from the war-ravaged land. It’s a lot easier when it comes to blows, since the towering Brienne can vanquish almost any man she fights. The book develops, much further than the TV show, the Sand Snakes plotting in Dorne against their crippled and cautious uncle. They want revenge against the Lannisters for their father’s death. Cersei’s daughter Myrcella is a Martell hostage and a pawn in the game. The focus on TV is the prince’s colorfully violent bastard nieces, but here it’s on his more conventional daughter Arienne, who plays a high-stakes game using her feminine wiles on Myrcella’s bodyguard, Arys Oakheart of Jaime’s officially celibate King’s Guard.Back in King’s Landing, Cersei surrounds herself with mediocrities after alienating those few good people who might have helped her. She wants to eliminate her young son’s bride, Margaery Tyrell, as a rival. She fears the latter aims to depose Cersei through the boy king she increasingly influences. We don’t see Tyrion, Daenarys, Jon, Stannis, the Onion Lord, or Bran (I don’t miss him, he bores me, along with his frog-gigging companions), but the story still drew me in.Westeros is a chaotic mess after years of civil war. Much of it, particularly the central Riverlands, is a smoking, corpse-choked ruin, full of orphans, broken people and bandits. There are rumors of dragons across the sea.

Even though I have watched the TV series closely from the very beginning, I still thoroughly enjoyed now reading Books 1, 2, and 3. But I have finally wound down my enthusiasm. Book 4 was just too crowded with nonessential information and characters. Maybe all this information will be necessary in the long run, but I didn't follow it as closely as with the prior books. It was tedious. But I look forward to the next book anyway, and will order it tonight. So, here's hoping to return to the good action again.Last night I watched the TV show as usual....nothing has dimmed my interest there. JON SNOW TOUCHED THE DRAGON'S FACE !! So they can do anything or kill anybody off now, I have seen the best part.

Highly anticipated book from Rod Pennington & Jeffery A Martin about a young woman's personal journey surrounding disillusionment of life story [life-long beliefs that get blown up], discovery of a new way to experience life, and newfound understanding of people she's lived with all her life, and never really known. How a shift of perception and consciousness can transition a life in multiple layers and ways of being. The spiritual content in this book is based on Jeffery's decade of scientific research of people who have experienced awakening, enlightenment, unitive experience, God consciousness, and fundamental wellbeing [lots of names for this way of being].Having completed The Finders Course five years ago [a protocol based on the scientific research of 'how' people have reached this way of being, I can personally attest to the success of this Course, and to the accuracy of how the characters in MAJIC are portrayed. A life of fundamental wellbeing is possible. I'm living it.Rod's humor and intelligent storytelling is a fabulous, funny, insightful, profound, highly entertaining look at 'enlightenment'. Even if you're not a Seeker, you will find this an excellent read. And if you are a Seeker, and want to Find a wellbeing previously unfound, I can highly recommend The Finders Course. [And no, I am not a paid spokesperson!] Just a person living in Peace Love Joy Life, Rebekah

I was excited to read another book by these two authors again. The wait was worth it. The characters are developed and interesting. They’re not the typical repetitive kind of daughter, father, boyfriend etc. that you find in a lot of books these days. They have flaws and are very different from each other which keeps it real. The story has you guessing as to where it’s going and the surprises are fun when they happen. I can usually put books down to sleep but this one had me losing some zzz’s for just “one more chapter”. I’d like to see another book with the same characters now that the cat is out of the bag. It would be fun to see what’s next for all of them.

I rarely read fiction anymore but I could not put this book down! I love Rod's story telling style, it pulled me through and I read this book nonstop on a flight. Felt like a kid again reading page after page with such anticipation. And the best part about this book is that you'll learn some simple but powerful techniques that will improve your life.

So excited to have another read from this pair of writers. I've been looking forward to it for months.Couldn't put it down and I'm on my second read.I've even started using the releasing techniques. Can't wait for their next book.

I'm not sure where Mr Majic should be placed on Kindle. But if there is a niche category for "Brilliantly Fun Reads," this book ranks #1.For fans of the Pennington/Martin writing duo, expect all the usual -- multi-dimensional characters involved in an engaging story line with twists and turns you never see coming. For new readers, buy this book as an introduction to the Pennington/Martin catalog of creative genius. This "who-dun-it" (or more aptly stated "who-is-it") will quickly become your favorite book of the year.

This is a terrific book that blends awakening and enlightenment with romance and hope. Well worth your time to check out this new novel!

Review

...truly a tour de force, a bold and stimulating work. With skill and sympathy, Basil Davidson sets up the lines of a debate that has long been waiting to be born. - Ivor Wilks, author of Asante in the Nineteenth Century Few people know sub-Saharan Africa better than Basil Davidson. Few people know more about its history. None has analysed its heritage and its dramatic predicament today with greater perceptiveness and passion. This is a book of major importance. The Black Man's Burden is not only about Africa, but about ethnicity, nations, and the problem of living together in society everywhere. - Eric Hobsbawm, author of Nations & Nationalism Basil Davidson gives us an informed and concerned reflection on Africa's current deep disappointments with the nation-state. His exploration of its relation to the wasted years of colonialism and also its parallel with the dramatic developments of Eastern Europe offer a clear and illuminating explanation. This is exciting reading. - Immanuel Wallerstein It is a great read. His attacking power springs from lucidity, humanity and dramatic artistry...Of the recent general books on nationalism this is the most useful one to recommend to undergraduate historians - John Lonsdale in JOURNAL OF AFRICAN HISTORY In this sustained attack upon nation-statism and its oppressive tendencies, Davidson brings to bear his vast knowledge of both Africa and the Balkans. This is a knowledge born not only of study, but of tramping through the bush with the guerrillas of Vojvodina and Angola. Davidson's admiration for the democratizing effects of grass-roots mobilization goes right back to his youthful years with Tito's partisans; and his attack upon rampant nationalism in Africa is equally relevant, as he demonstrates, to the bloody disintegration of Tito's federation... - Gerald Moore in LE MONDE DIPLOMATIQUE

The Black Man's Burden is a strong argument against the imperialist imposition of the idea of the nation=state on Africa. In fact against the nation-state anywhere. Basil Davidson is at heart a true internationalist.

Davidson's starting point is that colonialism caused a profoundly negative impact on African societies, and this impact is evident in the dysfunctional African states of the modern era, wherein governments struggle for legitimacy while civil unrest and low living standards are commonplace. Overall, the writing style is very agreeable, the volume is a little more than it needs to be to impart his message, and the conclusion is poorly supported by the main body.Davidson's ambition is to describe an elegant model wherein the colonial importation of the nation-state model for political organization so distorted African societies that they became structurally locked into a path towards failed statehood. The explanation is that the colonials uprooted traditional institutions that had governed societal behavior. European bureaucracy took their place and created a situation whereby Africans competed with each other for government jobs and the attendant elevated social status and revenue stream. A gap between urban elites and rural peasants developed. Independence only exacerbated the divide and the environment of opportunism. African nations were thus predatory states, as elites jousted for political power while ignoring, at best, or exploiting the rural majority. The response to the lack of state security was creation of "kinship corporations" that became patron/client networks. Western excuses often (incorrectly) blame this and the associated corruption on primitive practices of "tribalism."Ultimately Davidson is unsuccessful in his broad explanatory goal; the various regions of Africa had sufficiently different colonial experiences to resist a unifying explanation for modern Africa's malaise. His argument focuses on West Africa but largely sidesteps northern and southern regions. He spends a good deal of effort trying to show (eastern) European parallels to African difficulties in making the nation-state work. On one hand he decries the nation-state as alien to Africa and untenable, yet he acknowledges the existence of African states before colonialism and external factors after independence that would be difficult for ANY developing people to deal with, nation-state or not.The conclusion section comes across as dated and rather illogical. It seems to be tinged with the post-Cold War spirit of democracy ascendant, most famously expounded by Fukiyama's "End of History." The solution to the alien imposition of nation-state is an equally alien commodity: Western democracy (with an emphasis on federation, as in Germany). Never mind that Western democracies are ensconced as nation-states to begin with. However, Davidson's attempt is worthy in that it provides the serious reader on Africa many quite valuable insights about the colonial-African experience, including the slave trade from West Africa, the trajectory of early African intellectuals, lasting European efforts at neo-colonialism, tribalism as a manufactured tool of Western "divide and rule" strategy, and a close look at the die hard end of colonialism with the Portuguese. He deserves particular credit for at least mentioning intertwined ecological problems ahead of the greater Homer-Dixon wave.A final caution: Davidson was an elder statesman of African studies by the time he published this book in 1992. He provides little in the way of academic references in the text; basically he tells the reader that he's studied Africa for 40-plus years, and take his word for it. Perhaps this is suited to a former British military officer who served during WWII and has "been there and done that."

What a waste of time! Written in 1992, it is essentially just another old white British guy saying "Africa is struggling today because of colonization" Davidson says in about 300 pages what he could say in about 5 good paragraphs. Let me summarize his argument here: modern Africa has so many problems today because it "imported" a European model of government, the nation state. Africa was doing just fine on its own before Europeans came and colonized the whole thing. Then during colonization, the educated, elite Africans fell into the same pattern of administration that their White colonizers had brought from Europe. Then independence came, and Europeans just left with no exit plan, but those who took over were in love with the nation state model and "self alienated". He has essentially taken a universally accepted idea, that Africa is still reeling from the impact of colonization and rambled on and on and on and on about it for 300 pages. If you're looking for a book on African studies, look elsewhere. If you have to buy this book for a class, you might consider taking another class.

Just what i needed. great condition!

Basil Davidson's "The Black Man's Burden" is a go-to source to understanding Africa's struggle with the nation-state system. There are many theories accounting for Africa's push through development and stable governance. Davidson's own thesis is considered common knowledge and mainstream in African studies today, to the point that it barely needs a citation. It is standard in African studies to describe how the European colonizers carved up Africa, drawing political borders without respect to Africa's ethnic groups and languages. It is understood that while some pre-colonial lands, like Ghana, Senegal, Nigeria and South Africa may have faired slightly better than the rest in preparation for independence, the European politicians as a whole did next to nothing during their imperial reigns to encourage African social, economic and educational growth. It has also become textbook answer to describe the first African political elites as copy-cats of their greedy colonial masters. Even if Tanzania's first president, Julius Nyerere, had claimed it was "impossble" to recarve Africa's map (pg. 184), it is still a stretch to say that he believed it was so for selfless reasons. Davidson traces the development of Africa's countries through colonialism and up through independence, comparing Africa's transition to the nation-state system to other non-African experiences (a little long winded but a necessary non-African detour to solidify the thesis). As the author claims, the nation-state system was poorly suited to Africa's cultural context and much less so after the imposition of baseless political borders. But Davidson also explores another element in Africa's recent history. He begins by describing the internal termoil between embracing African traditions and transforming to European values familiar to many western educated Africans in the 1800s. African individuals like James Africanus Horton held that Africans should reject their African traditions and embrace a "modern" European philosophy. Davidson describes an early 19th century British army that was not racist but instead, mixed. All the way up to WWI African writers were ridiculing their own "savage" past... and then something changed. That change for "African solutions", the respect for the traditional past and the pride in pre-colonial kingdoms is the language and thesis we utilize today. The "African solution" is to embrace an African socio-culture, as many are now arguing. Blaming the age of colonialism for Africa's current plight will only achieve so much. Davidson's counterfactuals shed a positive light on Africa's potential and pose some interesting questions. What if Africa's tribes had united against the colonizer instead of succumbing to realism's alliances? What if the flourishing West African mercantilists in the 1800s had a chance to expand to compete with the European market? These counterfactuals breathe an African strength into the pit of bitterness that has become African politics and international relations. Africans can address their own corruption and lack of governance by pressing their leaders for accountability. Instead of allying with a fatalist view of colonial history, there is a counterfactual that could still be won over. It's not pan-Africanism as much as it is hope in one's own nation and state.

We did not find this book very up to date throughout our travels. Sri Lanka is changing so fast that it really needs to be updated more often. Many things had changed since the book had been published. We found Trip Advisor much more helpful throughout our travels.

I bought this book as a review before I headed on my journey to Sri Lanka. During my trip I found that I used this book more and more and was shocked with the accuracy of the details it gave about sights and placec to see in Sri Lanka. The authors provide great advice on places to stay, eat, and the culture!

I just returned from a trip to Kandy, in central Sri Lanka. This Lonely Planet, like others, packs a wonderful amount of info into a concise and pretty easy to navigate little pocket-book.When I was in Mexico, previously, I'd come to expect LP to list nearly every restaurant, hotel, etc. in the area. In Colombo and Kandy, I found that while it had a good enough selection that one could go ones whole trip only on recommendations from the book, there were also a number of stores, restaurants, etc which were really worthy of note (imho) that were not included. In short, a great book, a worthy travel companion, and a wonderful fallback, but not the all encompassing guide to everything that I sometimes expect from LP.

Like all Lonely Planet guides, it is clearly written and consistently laid out. We are now really ready for our trip. I can't say more until we come back.

I've used Lonely Planet guides for three decades, spanning such diverse destinations as North Africa, SE Asia, the South Pacific, New Zealand, Central America, and Turkey, and have generally found them to range from acceptable (Central America) to excellent (most of the rest). Unfortunately, LP's Sri Lanka guide is such a terrible piece of garbage compared to those, or any other guidebooks I've used, that the authors should have their word processors cremated. It's not that the prices are far higher than indicated; that's to be expected when foreign tourism rises sharply after 30 years of civil war, and domestic tourism booms with a rapidly-developing economy. It's not that some accommodation isn't as described; places age and management changes. It's simply that the breathless description of the wonderfulness of the various sites, and the time required to enjoy them, is so at odds with the reality that you can't believe the authors were ever in the country. For instance, LP raves about Unawatuna ("a place of dreams") and Mirissa (quiet serenity), beach resorts in the south. Well, Unawatuna might be a place of dreams if you're in a Lariam nightmare, but in reality it's a strip of horribly overdeveloped sand that you can only catch glimpses of between wall to wall buildings while dodging loud, smelly traffic on the dirty little lane that deafens most of the accommodation. The water, during the calmest time of year, is murky, and if you don't watch out, you'll be hit by a boat while stubbing your toes on the rocks.Mirissa, portrayed as a get-away-from-it-all paradise, is a yards-wide strip sandwiched between the murky water and a frantically-busy two-lane highway carrying six lanes of traffic, all beeping signals at each other from early until very late. Like Unawatuna, it's describes as having "excellent" snorkeling, when in fact there's one tiny murky tidepool at the best of times. It's the same with the historical sites. The ancient city of Anurhadapura is described as being on a par with Bagan in Myanmar or Angkor in Cambodia, and worthy of 3-4 days. When I spoke to the "concierge" at our guest house, he said we'd see it all in 5 hours, and wouldn't want a second day. Having spent a week at Angkor without feeling satiated, I laughed, but he was absolutely right. The same held for the other Cultural Triangle locations, all of them brutally overpriced. The "cultural capital", Kandy, was also described as being worthy of several days, but after seeing an evening cultural performance and the Temple of the Tooth on the first afternoon and evening, there was not much else there. The "wonderful" English architecture of Nuwara Eliya can be viewed in two easy ho-hum hours, not appreciated for days.It goes on and on. Everything is overstated, and the time allotments (4 weeks for the Cultural Triangle, 3 weeks for the south, 4 weeks for the hills) are frankly insane.Sri Lanka is a pleasant but unspectacular country to visit. Unless you're a surfer, the beaches are nice to look at, but useless for most other water sports, and they're being badly developed. The food is good if you enjoy curries and seafood, and the people are friendly and intelligent to deal with. The tea plantations are uniform carpets of green that cover hills that have been denuded to accommodate them, and the air is often too smoky for viewing anyway. Accommodation is rapidly headed toward being bad value. The National Parks like Yala see far too many visitor vehicles to maintain the natural experience. You can easily see all there is to occupy you in three weeks or less.I usually keep my LP guidebooks when I leave a country, or at least leave them for the benefit of the next traveler. I took my LP Sri Lanka, tore the pages out, ripped them to shreds, and wished I could make the authors eat them. This book goes beyond being useless. It misleads and misdirects you in a way that borders on the cynical. Don't buy it, and look with the greatest of care at the upcoming 2011 update. I'm betting it's a slightly reworked pile of the same BS.

The misinformation in this book could ruin any trip! Directions to bus or train stations? Not here. Travel times? Nope. Directions to most important places seem to be "ask a local." Thanks!

I could not put this book down! Thre was so much actual history documented by Lewis and Clark through their journals. The story of how their meeting with a young Indian girl, how they realized her intelligence, and sense of direction, and got her to be their interpreter on their route to the Pacific coast. She is introduced to the cultures of the white man, and resolutely holds on to her native cultures. There is sadness and loss, and a great love threading throughout this story. Sacajawea was a woman far ahead of her time...beautifully written.

This is an amazing book. To read about the past, the way this author wrote you journeyed on the trail with the expedition, you could feel what Sacagawea felt, you lived in the tipi with her. Incredible, I love a story in which you immerse deep into the depths of it as if you are really there and this book does that. It is a long book and I enjoyed that as well because when you are done you are satisfied. It is also full of historical accounts written by the actual people who lived then. It is a fictional story brushed with some fact and I absolutely recommend this book!

I like to call this a 'storified' version of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Sure, it's not going to be 100% accurate historically but i think it gives you a good enough idea of the events and in such a readable form that you'll thoroughly enjoy it. It may even make you want to go read something of more substance about the events of that time. As a Brit who moved to the US in 1996, I had never heard of Lewis and Clark's adventure and was curious about it as it's often referred to in the media. I stumbled upon this book and bought it for someone else but then also read it myself. The writing is absorbing, immersing you into that world and time. I learned a lot from it and would suggest to any parent whose kids are learning about this in school to give them the book and maybe spark more interest for the subject than a dry history text is likely to impart. As the title suggests, it's all very much told from the viewpoint of Sacajawea so you're getting a woman's worldview rather than the usual white male protagonist.

I love this book ! I have the paper back but I bought the e-book so I can put the old copy up. I read this at least once a year! It shows not only the strength of Native Americans ( especially the women) but also how little they were appreciated. You also learn a good amount of history also.I was lucky enough to recently make the trip to the Wind River reservation to visit her grave, and also through Montana and saw Pompey's Pillar and Clark's signature.

The story written in detail of the Lewis and Clark expedition highlighting the biography of Sacajawea. The young female/with baby Indian guide on the expedition. Very exciting historical novel in early American history. Highly recommend.

Back when my Mom was alive, like 30 years ago, she had terminal illness and stuck in bed most of the time. She very much enjoyed thoroughly reading this true story about Native American woman who traveled with Lewis and Clark.Great read. Highly recommended.

I read this book several years ago and enjoyed it so much that I went on a search for it this year. I have the hard bound, but wanted to be able to read on the go, and the book is a little heavy. It is a work of fiction, with many documented truths intermingled through the story. In todays world of what we think is a 'hard' life, it becomes an eye opener to the sufferings of a different time, a different culture a different world. If you enjoy history I think you will love this book about Sacajawea....the hardest part is learning to spell her name!

This is the second time I have read this book. The cover looks like it will be a romance novel (God forbid), but it is a fairly accurate, historically. The voyage of Lewis and Clark is one of the great historical accomplishments made and successfully completed when our country was very young.Think about it, Jefferson was president. Until I knew better, I thought that this expedition took place around 1850, because of the western setting. This takes place when Jefferson first purchased the Louisiana territory, and when St. Louis was the West

I have suffered from severe anxiety all of my life. I tried everything to combat it but nothing helped much. I discovered the Panic Away! program and that led to the DARE program and book by the same author, Barry McDonagh. They have been SO helpful to me in accepting and embracing my anxiety rather than running away from it. This workbook is cartoon based with little assignments to do and tidbits of information about anxiety and overcoming it. Alone, this will not suddenly end your anxiety but, in conjunction with the DARE book or program or just as a reminder of how we can overcome anxiety and that it is NOT in control of us unless we let it be, it is a good workbook.I went through the pages and did some of the little assignments and they brought me back to the DARE book which I read and loved, I am now reading it again. I suggest using the DARE approach with the workbook for the best results. This workbook may be good on its own for those who experience mild anxiety or who want a tiny taste of the DARE approach. It's also a bit introspective and you may learn a few things about yourself that you didn't even realize which is always a good thing.

This work book is an awesome companion to the Dare book. It is unlike any other work book I have seen, extremely user friendly with wonderful illustrations. You will not feel overwhelmed by this one. It's another wonderful tool to add to your arsenal. And the price could not be better!

Just like the book Dare, this is another gift Barry gave me. To me, this book is kind of an integration of the crucial information in that book, making it more readable and easy to implement. What’s more, this book added a lot more ways to practice to give you a deeper understanding of the concepts, at mean time, change some strategy like “ love yourself” to “ self care” and from Magnesium and Cal to only Mag and so on.Just like I said, if you have suffered from anxiety for more than 10 years like me, this book will change your life, take commitment and implement to this book, never giver up, I promise you a good life is right there.

I would just like to say that I’ve had bad anxiety ever since I was little, I want to say it started when I was around 5 yr. If you believe in this book and you are willing to apply the response, it will change your life. It changed mine. Definitely read the book, do the workbook, and download his audios from his website. I apply it vigoursly doing the dare response is something i do everyday, almost all day. I’ve listened to the audiobook 20+ times. It requires a lot of effort and belief but if you want to end your anxiety these books will allow you to do that.

Ok so everyone says it’s cartoon like. Yes, it is. But it’s what gives this book it’s charm! It’s to help the book be fun and more relatable and to not be a stressor. The questions and activities in the book promote deep thinking and help you put your anxiety into perspective. I really enjoy working in this book so far. I’ve discovered things about my anxiety and panic disorder that I didn’t know were there. This book asks the right questions and goes great as a companion to the Dare book. I bought both and love the way things are broken down and simplified without being condescending. Definitely worth the purchase!

I purchased this workbook to go with my copy of DARE, and it is serving me well. I have even used it while feeling anxious to implement the DARE response. I dogeared a few pages of activities to use the next time I need help working through some anxiety. This approach works for me in a way that standard CBT has not. Don't get me wrong: CBT started me on the right path, but DARE gave me that extra edge so that I could finally accept my anxiety, address it directly, and move towards my recovery.

Calming to write in and to have to sit down an analyze yourself. Cute illustrations to add a light hearted look to it. Very much coincides with the DARE book itself. Same principles that the book teaches you, just prompting you to apply it to your own personal situation.

This book is a great companion book to DARE https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0956596258/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 . It has extra great tips not in the DARE book and will be a great read for setbacks, quick and to the point for us who has been using the DARE techniques.
