Mr. Dewees has created an approachable and enlightening book for the newcomer to the topic and a go-to for the professional. I can see this book being at home on the professional designers desk, in the work truck, and on the coffee table! I will never look at palms the same way and now that I have this remarkable reference, I look forward to exploring my surroundings with new eyes. The real passion with which Mr. Dewees approaches the subject and encyclopedic knowledge he has make reading this book akin to the listening to one of the best tour guides one could meet. The marriage of the inspired writing with Caitlin Atkinson's wondrous photography are a game changer. Couldn't recommend more highly, nothing like it, a must have!

This book focuses not so much on all of the palm species that one could collect, but how to use palms in the landscape. This is the only palm book I own that has that perspective, and one that fills a gap for palm lovers. For anyone that wants to add palms to garden, Jason's book will help you choose the right palm for the spot whether you need a diminutive Chamaedorea for a intimate, shady, sheltered site, or huge Jubaea or Canary Island Date palm to fill a grand landscape. It can also keep you from planting the Canary Island Date where you really need a Pygmy Date! Another truly enjoyable aspect of this book is the way Jason describes the beautiful gardens he visited in writing this book. Its a wonderful read whether you already love palms, gardening, landscaping or just the outdoors.

Palm trees suffer from several stereotypes: Palms can only be used in the tropics or as houseplants; Palms can only be employed as massive elements of garden design; Palms are primarily desert or oasis habituates. Jason Dewees, in his well-crafted and edited tome, Designing With Palms, lays these tired old tropes to rest. Dewees explains how palms can be integrated into a variety of landscapes, whether as impressive groves, luscious undergrowths in pine and other warm temperate climates, and as stunning players in concert with other subtropical and tropical plants. The beginning of the book gives a brief overview of the history, culture, climate, structure, and anatomy of palm tress. If you have never contemplated the elements of a palm tree, outside of fronds and fruit, this is an excellent primer. There is a section on water, planting, feeding, etc. There are 2 info boxes, Vigor and Weakness and Hardy Hybrid Palms, that could have been expanded. The use of palms as stunted landscape plants is underappreciated and the benefit of hybrid palms in colder latitudes deserve more detail. These two palm elements really open possibilities for gardeners that may have shied away from palms in the past.Palm Sensations and Services details the ways palms can be used in garden design and to what long term effect. Exquisite American Gardens is a survey of gardens from Hawaiʻi to the Carolinas, California to Florida, showing the variety and options available to curious and adventurous gardeners. The final section, A Portfolio of Palm Species, is exactly that: a listing of palms that will grow outside in the appropriate warm temperate, subtropical and tropical areas in the United States. Growth habit, water use and substitutions, along with climate and drought tolerance, are listed for each entry. This is an excellent book for the beginning palm or subtropical/tropical gardener. While there is very little information on propagation or acclimatization, the extensive bibliography and resource listing can more than fill in the gaps. I would caution that this is a book for those who wish to garden with palms outdoors. If you are searching for information on growing palms inside or in a greenhouse, you would be best advised to look elsewhere. Dewees has expertly filled in a missing area of garden literature by capturing the beauty and utility of palms in a book for the average gardener.

The photographs of palms in gardens in this book are compelling, but they are just the start. Once I began reading, the way I thought about palm trees was transformed from a two dimensional postcard idea about palms to a three dimensional kind of understanding -- with concepts like canopy-scape, palms as hedges, groundcover, palms as adding vertical height... I feel I have a much deeper appreciation for the way palms can transform tight spaces close to structures, without damaging foundations, due to their distinct anatomy compared to other trees. Loaded with inspiration, and with detailed names of different palms and their unique requirements, this book is eminently practical. I must warn readers, you may find yourself radically changing your landscape!

Designing with Palms is a wonderful resource for any professional designer or gardener. This book has expert information for the practical applications of palm trees in a variety of settings. The combined knowledge and stunning beauty of this book make it a must have for any plant enthusiast.

I expected to like this book, but it totally exceeded expectations. It's not just a beautiful photo book (which it is) but has thoughtful, sincerely-interesting essays that touch on a variety of disciplines. Whether you are looking at designing a garden, learning more about the history or perhaps the science of these beautiful plants, you won't be disappointed.

The first part consist of beautifully inspiring photos of plantings with useful comments. The second part is an excellent reference on individual palm species.

I love this book! I am a landscape designer in Houston Texas and we are sub-tropical zone 9. This book really helps inspire me when working on a tropical style design. Great addition to my plant and design library! #iamapld
