Review

Fans of Zafón’s The Shadow of the Wind and new readers alike will be delighted with this gothic semiprequel. In 1920s Barcelona, David Martin is born into poverty, but, aided by patron and friend Pedro Vidal, he rises to become a crime reporter and then a beloved pulp novelist. David’s creative pace is frenetic; holed up in his dream house—a decrepit mansion with a sinister history—he produces two great novels, one for Vidal to claim as his own, and one for himself. But Vidal’s book is celebrated while David’s is buried, and when Vidal marries David’s great love, David accepts a commission to write a story that leads him into danger. As he explores the past and his mysterious publisher, David becomes a suspect in a string of murders, and his race to uncover the truth is a delicious puzzle: is he beset by demons or a demon himself? Zafón’s novel is detailed and vivid, and David’s narration is charming and funny, but suspect. Villain or victim, he is the hero of and the guide to this dark labyrinth that, by masterful design, remains thrilling and bewildering. (June) -- Publishers Weekly, starred ReviewAnother delicious supernatural mystery from bestselling Catalan author Zafón (The Shadow of the Wind, 2005).Mix Edgar Allan Poe with Jorge Luis Borges, intellectual mysterian Arturo Pérez-Reverte, and maybe add a dash of Stephen King, and you have some of the makings of Zafón’s sensibility. Fans of his earlier book will be pleased to find themselves on patches of familiar ground, including a revisit to that wonderful conceit, the Cemetery of Forgotten Books. Indeed, this is a prequel–but only of a kind: Familiar figures turn up at points, only to seem less than familiar as the narrative twists and turns. The none-too-heroic hero, David Martín, is an aspiring journalist who bucks hackwork to turn in a crowd-pleasing series for a tough boss. This leads him into an onerous contract with the usual crooked publishers and, indirectly, into a rivalry with his former mentor–all of which, naturally, entails love triangles and smoldering egos. The picture is complicated by the arrival of another curious publisher, Andreas Corelli, who offers David piles of pesetas to write, well, a book of a different sort, involving research that yields piles of corpses and occasions ample cliffhangers. Zafón has a fine talent for inserting unexpected hitches into a story line already resistant to graphing, whose outcome is definitely not seen from afar. The plot resolves in a rush, for the author finds himself with many a loose end to tie up, but once it sinks in, the result is more than satisfying. Zafón delivers a warning about the dangers of obsession, mixed with an obvious passion for literature and the printed word; his book is also a song of love for Barcelona with all its creaking floorboards and hidden subbasements.A nice fit with the current craze for learned mysteries and for spooks of both the spying and the spectral kind. -- Kirkus ReviewsPraise for The Shadow of the Wind “One gorgeous read”—Stephen King“Diabolically good”—Elle magazine “Superbly entertaining”—Washington Post“Breathtaking”—New York Times“Wondrous”—Entertainment Weekly“Magic”—New York Times Book Review“Absolutely marvelous”—Kirkus“Infectious”—The Economist“Outstanding”—Library Journal“Lavish”—Booklist“Gripping”—Philadelphia InquirerFrom the Hardcover edition.

The only reason I do not give 5 stars to this excellent book is that the ending left behind a huge question, as another reviewer correctly points our. I do not want to give away plot elements so I will not discuss what it is. The plot and characters are excellent and the second half of the book had more tension and urgency than The Shadow of the Wind. I believe maybe some knots were not tied at the end because the author will revisit this in his 3rd book ( or 4th as I understand he published late last year a 4th book in thios series. It feels a little like any middle installment in a series, for example Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy, where The 2 Towers suffers slightly from being the middle installment.Having said all that, if you speak Spanish read it in Spanish. I read The Shadow of the Winds in English and this one ion Spanish and of course theoriginal version is slightly more clear as to what the author is saying. With that said, I recommend this book most heartily but make plans to read the next installments. It is rare these days to read a book ( or books as I read the first one as well) of such high quality literary level, complex characters and great plot twists. I will follow rthis author.

If you start in Chapter 40 of Act 2 [Kindle loc. 6122] "Ella le llama el patrón. . .", you'll be starting at an exposition which, in a few paragraphs, pretty much summarizes everything up to that point, and avoiding the mind-numbing, metaphysical and spiritual badminton between David and his sponsor.I enjoyed Book #1 of this series, but this second book felt like it was shoehorned together from barely connected stories. When Isabella was introduced, it looked like we'd be treated to some quality wit-pitting with David, as we were with Fermín and Daniel in Book #1, but her character disappeared into a weak connection with the earlier tome.Again, the main, female love interest [Christina] is thinly sketched. The denouement is exciting and entertaining, but it takes 600+ pages to get to it.All action occurs at the end of a dark _____ [hallway, passage, room, cable car]. No drama occurs where lightning is adequate! There is a Spanish-language audio version of this book. Good to have for those wanting practice with pronunciation, cadence, etc.

I have read all four books of the series. We will be visiting Barcelona next month, though I’m sure it has changed a lot.

I have read all of Zafón's books and this one was my favorite. You see, feel and experience everything that goes on, walking down those mystical streets of an old Barcelona. I enjoyed and savored every page. It is hard to not read it from start to end because the mystery and the complexity of the characters is unparalleled. The characters are so profound and rich that you are able to see the world through so many eyes. Zafón's funny and witty tone adds the finishing touch to a story that is extremely well written. An amazing journey! and one of the best books I've ever read.

Increiblemente genial.

Right off the bat, if you're autistic like me and have trouble understanding idioms, this product will surely knock your socks off. There are many idiom books out there, but I heard through the grapevine that this book was the cream of the crop. Now I usually take advice like that with a grain of salt, but I'm happy I went out on a limb and buried my head in the sand with this one, because it has truly made understanding idioms a piece of cake. It's a shot in the arm to know that no longer will I be in stuck in a conversation with my autism as an albatross around my neck every time I open my mouth; I am now able to bury the hatchet with language. It's books like these that give you a leg up where genetics let you down. I highly recommend this book.

I really would LOVE to recommend this book for all of people who are learning English as a second language and hope to know English idioms. I am from Ukraine, but now I am staying in LA to learn English. I was looking for some books that could helps me to understand the meaning of idioms because sometimes it was too difficult for me to figure out what they mean. This book has more than 700 idioms with examples, meanings and origins. The origins help me to remember the idioms easier. After I read some, I finally understand why people use idioms in particular situations and I feel like I will never forget them. It may not really helpful for academic courses or daily conversation, but it is easy to read anytime and it is good for FUN! Unless I am older than twenty, this book is fun enough! And especially, this is cheaper than others. So, I'd like to say just buy and read. I am 99% sure that buying this book is going to be a good choice

I bought this book to help as I tutor a Mexican woman in English. Idioms can be the hardest thing to learn, since they don't always make sense. I wanted to be sure she understands them, even if she doesn't always have to come up with them herself. There are multiple ways to say things and she can get her message across without using idioms, but she will be at a disadvantage if she doesn't recognize them when someone else uses them.I like that the book includes 3 resources for each idiom - a definition, a use in a sentence, plus the derivation. Also, the idioms are listed in alphabetical order, so it is an easy reference. This book should make learning more fun.

My 14 yr old daughter was telling me a story the other day. My reply was, "Yeah, you don't want to throw the baby out with the bath water!" She had no idea what I was talking about. I mentioned a few other idioms, none of which she knew. I then realized I had failed as a parent in this department! I looked up books on idioms and found this book with really good reviews so I bought it. It has been so fun to have around the house and our other children refer to it often. My sister-in-law loved it so much I ordered her one too. Fun book to have just sitting on the coffee table. Highly recommend it.

I have been working with a student who has Asperger's. He has trouble with figurative language, especially idioms. This book has been a big help. There are a number of expressions that are relevant to the present-day culture and are used very often. The common sayings are listed in alphabetical order. For each selection, the idiom is presented in the context of a sentence. The meaning of the idiom is given in plain terms. Then, the origin of the idiom is given to give a historical explanation. My student is enjoying going through the book. We use this as an activity when a five minute change of pace is needed for a transition between reading comprehension activities or writing assignments. We will go through several of the idioms together. I saw a review that said that the expressions are too child-like. I don't find this to be the case at all. The vast majority of the expressions are heard in adult conversation on a regular basis.I have discovered that many children don't often use the same idioms we are familiar with from an earlier generation. They have their own lingo, but it is essential for them to be familiar with the sayings in the book. It enables them to have a broader range of expression and an expanded frame of reference when communicating with adults and gathering meaning of reading passages. My student had a blank look on his face when I would relate some of the idioms in the past. I knew it was an issue I needed to address because he is sure to encounter it as he advances in our school's high school English curriculum. This book would help out ELL students as well. They struggle to grasp idioms that we take for granted, although they communicate with intricate idiomatic expressions in their native languages. The book will also benefit students who need to spice up writing samples. Teachers like to see students paint colorful pictures with their words in descriptive narratives and much prefer it to bland narratives that are often passed in. I think this is a great resource for any educator and I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Review

"This book presents a number of subtle physical (and accompanying philosophical) ideas in a non-technical manner for the non-professional reader. The exposition is often a model of clarity..., presenting very difficult physical and conceptual ideas in a remarkably lucid way."--MathematicalReviews"This book is gold.... Barbour leaves his mark on every topic he considers, including the arrow of time and the origins of the Big Bang. One is left with a remarkable conception of reality and a sense of a personal quest.... Above all we get a sense of what economy of thought can truly be, ofhow shocking and sparse the concepts of physics may turn out to be.... Whether or not Barbour is right in his vision, as pedagogy and as analysis his book is a masterpiece."--The New York Times Book Review"An unusual alternate to the standard way of viewing the four-dimensional universe (three spatial dimensions and time), beginning with how our perception of time is formed."--Publishers Weekly"Barbour's theories may lead to the solution of one of the great paradoxes of modern science: the chasm between classical and quantum physics."--Science News"The End of Time [is] British physicist Julian Barbour's treatise on the idea that time doesn't even exist. It's nothing more, he says, than an illusion, a sort of cosmic parlor trick.... The orderly flow of events may really be as much an illusion as the flickering frames of a movie. Andaccording to independent physicist Barbour's new book, even the apparent sequence of the flickers is illusory."--Time"In this provocative volume, Barbour presents the basic evidence for the nonexistence of time, explaining what a timeless universe is like and showing how the world will nonetheless be experienced as intensely temporal."--The Astronomical Society of the Pacific"Most of the work is concerned with the struggle to resolve the disparities among classical physics, quantum mechanics, and general relativity. Barbour argues that the omission of time from the foundations of physics will enable scientists to achieve a unified theory of physics.... A book thatdeserves serious study and consideration."--Jack W. Weigel, Library Journal"I cannot think of another book that so successfully forces the reader to reconsider his or her most intimate assumptions about reality. But there is much more here than a radical scientific vision. In order to properly explain his destruction of time, Barbour also offers one of the clearestoverview explanations of twentieth century physics available. Whether he is right or wrong, Barbour is on a great intellectual journey, and he is articulate enough to allow us to observe him in flight. Of course, if Barbour is right, the previous sentence would have to be rewritten. Read the bookand learn how."--Jaron Lanier"Julian Barbour is so knowledgable about contemporary physics--especially general relativity theory, quantum theory, and quantum gravity--so learned in the history of physics, so gifted at analytical philosophy and so elegant and amusing in his presentation that anyone who seriously confrontshis argumentation and nevertheless remains a temporalist (as I do) will inevitably emerge a stronger, subtler, and wiser advocate of that philosophy."--Abner Shimnoy, Emeritus Professor of Philosophy and Physics, Boston University"Julian Barbour's new theory of time is the most interesting and provocative new idea about time to be proposed in many years. If true it will change the way we see reality. Experts in the field of quantum gravity have for years looked up to Julian Barbour for his wisdom and imagination, as heis one of the few people who is truly both a scientist and a philosopher. Written with rare clarity and force, this book makes his thinking accessible to all interested readers."--Lee Smolin

Reader beware: This is hardcore theoretical physics, and as deep a thinker I believe myself to be, I clearly lack the education to keep up with a lot of the language and math Barbour uses to make his case. As near as I can figure it, Barbour theorizes that we exist in a 100% STATIC reality where nothing is actually ever in motion. I happen to agree with this theory, and believe that our experience is an ILLUSION of motion created by the rapid focusing and refocusing of individuated Consciousness into one holographic "still frame" after another. In a truly infinite reality, this is completely possible and even PLAUSIBLE. However, for me it's far easier to imagine such a reality using allegory than the physics and math employed within this book by Barbour, a truly brilliant human being. One of few books in my library I was unable to finish, but just having it there makes me feel smarter, lol!

I read this book many years ago, and still it plagues me. Read at your own risk! The ideas are sound and the presentation lucid. And yet, the ideas are so counter to human experience that they take some time to absorb. The author himself says it took him a couple decades just to write the first chapter. Well, I've been ruminating over that first chapter for almost a decade.Although difficult and often counter-intuitive, much of what Barbour proposes is validated by experiment. In the grand tradition of *real* science, this is a book of exploration. Enjoy!

I've read many of the books on this topic. None has been as helpful in providing real insight regarding this totally un-intuitive concept. For example, at one point you started reading this review but now you're reading these particular words. How could that have happened if "time" didn't pass? One simplistic way to describe how Barbour explains it is that what we perceive as "time" is actually change. We get confused because we apply metrics to the perceptions.Obviously that's not totally satisfying to our desire to really understand what's going on, but it does 'move the ball' a little toward that goal. And, the book provides a much richer view of the whole concept, including the history of theories and thoughts about time as well as how matter and motion impact what we experience. This is well worth the read for anyone obsessed with trying to comprehend reality.

In my opinion, this is one of the most misunderstood books on Amazon. A lot of the reviewer expect the same pseudo-scientific, philosophizing, feel good, new age mumbo jumbo so prevalent and highly rated. They are rightly disappointed, since this was not the aim of this book.In fact what Barbour tries here is to make a case for finding the basic principles underlying one of the most successful modern physical theory: the general relativity. In fact he manages to establish this connection making "The End of Time" one the most meaty popular science books of all times. It is true that Barbour does don't convincingly explains the psychological illusion of time in a timeless universe, but it would be foolish to expect that, since the problem of qualia is still an elusive, poorly understood interdisciplinary concept. Still, this shortcoming does not make the book any less intriguing. The only irritating aspect of the book was the narcissistic attitude of the author. He has not decided whether he writes a popular science book or an biography of himself (I don't use the word autobiography, as he praises himself as if he would be a different person.)Still I give this book 5 stars, since it is extremely well written and Barbour makes an excellent job to make a very hard technical topic intuitive and accessible. The only reason he seems to fail is simply the very modest average intellectual capability of the general audience. For example, a lot of the layman reviewers attack the notion of timelessness, which is in fact does not originate from Barbour but is a most mainstream view among all self-respecting physicists. The notion that the arrow of time is a consequence of the entropy increase in the state-space is neither new, nor very controversial. What's a new however is that the topology of Einstein's space-time manifold is naturally glued together from disjoint three dimensional moments based on a similarity metric alone is not widely recognized.I think this is a very fundamental and interesting insight, which deserves a good deal of thoughts. This conclusion of his, however is not a subjective opinion, but a well defined mathematical statement proven by Barbour and his coauthors.
