For transparency, I've known Ben Goldfarb for the better part of a decade and have enjoyed his journalistic writings about everything from shellfish to Yellowstone. But this book is something else!I have a bachelor's degree in wildlife biology and a PhD in aquatic ecology. I know quite a bit about beaver biology and, when Ben first mentioned he was going to write a book all about beavers, I was pretty skeptical that he could fill 250 pages with beaver information that would be interesting and approachable to a broad audience. And I was dead wrong.Every page is filled with phenomenal information about this crazy critter and is written in a humorous and captivating narrative. This book is unique because it doesn't tease apart the story of the beaver into chapters focused on ecology, evolution, and human-beaver interactions. Rather, Ben has weaved these components together to paint a holistic picture about beavers, illustrating the remarkably diverse interactions between this species' biology and the history of the North American landscape, both geologically and culturally. Perhaps most fascinating is the narrative Ben develops through interviewing all kinds of people from living beaver trappers, landscape managers, and academic scientists - all of whom are compelled in some way by this rodent.I've learned orders of magnitude more about beavers than I ever thought there was to know. Although Eager deals primarily with the history, contributions, plight, and attempted restoration of the Castor canadensis (and European cousin Castor fiber), the reader will be reminded of what happens when an invading species (in this case, Man) eradicates a perceived foe then is forced to live with unforeseen consequences that are far greater than the imagined threat.The author, through the use of lively storytelling based on exhaustive research, introduces us to Castor canadensis, its history here in the US and across the pond, its overhunting for English and European hats and coats, which become unfashionable after the beaver population has already been decimated, its attempts to survive only to be regarded as a varmint whose value to rivers, streams, and water is not understood well enough to shield it from farmers' and ranchers' bullets and traps. As with any good story, this one has conflict, desire, greed, altruism, sex, love, death, politics, interesting characters, and a good measure of humor. Not what you'd expect from a book about beavers, is it?I agree with environmentalist and author Bill McKibben who said of Eager, "This witty, engrossing book will be a classic from the day it is published." I bought this for our 11 year old friend that loves Star Wars, the book came out a while ago so I trusted that he wouldn't have it on his book shelf. He loved it. It is packed with so much information he would have to spend hours and hours reading it before he digested it all. He was so happy something like this existed. It makes a great present for anyone that loves these movies.

Great book

"Star Wars, Episode I: The Visual Dictionary" combines text by David West Reynolds with a wealth of excellent full-color photographs. Rather than rely on shots from the film, the book primarily uses still shots that appear to have been purposefully taken for a project like this. This was, in my opinion, a wise choice, since I have noticed that the photos in other movie tie-in books can sometimes be a bit murky. The photos here are crisp and colorful, and really allow you to analyze and enjoy the details.The text comes in the form of easy-to-digest nuggets. The book covers characters, ships, weapons, clothing, robots, animals, and other elements from the movie. The text offers intriguing little tidbits of info about the SW universe (although I imagine that more devoted fans may argue about how "canonical" this info is).A nice aspect of the book is the fact that barely glimpsed elements in the film are given loving attention here. For example, you can "meet" the members of the Jedi Council more intimately. I liked the comparative size chart of Naboo sea monsters. And the fashion-oriented will have a great time exploring the ornate costumes worn by Queen Amidala and others. Overall, this book is a lot of fun.

If you follow Penny Reid’s social media, you know she often post self deprecating warnings about her new releases. For this books warnings included: 1. It’s strange! 2. It’s a slooooooow burn 3. The cliffhanger is huge 4. It’s strange!I’m happy to say it is all true. The strange twice is intentional because it is strange.1. What makes it strange is these characters will not be pigeonholed. They will not be defined by a single label or attribute. Some of their attributes are completely contrary to some of their other attributes, you know, like real people. It’s strange because Penny Reid trusts her readers to understand that her characters are more than the typecast the might seem at first. And that, dear reader, is a delight.2. It is slow and it burns in many ways. This is in no way a criticism or to say it is boring. Quite the opposite. It is slow because less than a week passes from the beginning to the end of the book and the two of them are stuck together with not a lot to do. However, all those daily, mundane activities (picking up a guitar, birthday dinner with the family, afternoon at the bookstore) provide them with the opportunity to discover and connect with someone they never expected. It burns because it takes no more than a day or so to see that there is a hydrogen bomb’s worth of chemistry between Mona and Abram but there is a lie between them that prevents them from acting on that magnetic pull.3. The cliffhanger was inevitable, as this is the first in a 3-part trilogy that are releasing a month apart in February, March, and April 2019. I knew it was coming and read the last 25% of the book anxious and expectant for where this episode might end. I was not disappointed. It was brutal but it also is a very natural place for this story to conclude.4. It is strange because this story is told from solely Mona’s 1st person perspective and she has a lot of scrumptious strange going on in her head. Some of it is hilarious, some sad, some erudite, some foolish, some passionate, and some loyal. Mona is a complex woman who has a very unique background. On the surface, there are many aspects of her character that are not relatable (extremely affluent parents, math/physics prodigy, college graduate at 18 years old) and yet she is still incredibly relatable and it is simply sublime to spend time in her brain.Layered like the best bean dip-guacamole-salsa combo you can imagine, this story is making me crave extra strong tortilla chips to dig deep to get to all the best parts mixed together, because it is all the best parts.Space is next in the line up and it is making me wish Mona would figure out time travel to the future so I could devour it now.An early copy of this book was provided in exchange for an honest review. I really like Penny Reid's writing style- her sense of humor is so fun, she creates wonderful romantic tension between characters, and she writes characters that are likable (if not always relatable). Motion offers all those aforementioned elements I enjoy in a Penny Reid book, but it also didn't have enough of some other things that her best books have offered. Did it seem like we really didn't know much about Abram? The reviews/book blurbs tell us he is a "slacker" but I didn't get that sense from reading the book. We have what his family told us about him, what Gabby said about him, and a few scenes of him interacting with Mona, and all of that didn't add up to enough character exposition for me. I needed a little more. And I think that could be what's lacking for me in Motion overall- it needed more, just across the board. More editing of the internal dialogue and internal explanations to make way for more of the story to be included and more interactions between the characters. I kind of suspect that all three books could have been edited concisely into one really terrific book. We'll all still buy the three, because Penny Reid is so entertaining and these really are engaging characters in an interesting premise, but as a stand alone book this one fell just a little short for me. I predict you'll have a good time reading Motion and ultimately that's what it's all about.

This starts with a great premise, then goes into an angsty, do-nothing downward spiral. This is an unfinished story, with many pages of tiresome internal dialogue. It is the first of 3 installments. Apparently, you will have to buy all 3 at 4.99 apiece if you want to read the ending.

I love Penny Reid. The story is great. I am not sorry I read it--but I wouldn't say it ends as a cliffhanger. It is short and incomplete. It ends not with a cliffhanger per se, but like they just chopped the book I assume she has written into pieces. I am assuming done for increased profit and I find it incredibly annoying. I will finish the series, but hope the author doesn't chose to do this in the future. I would rather pay more for an actual book.

So, the problem with loving Penny Reid so much but also not being one who reads excerpts or teasers ahead of time is that I NEVER read the blurb for this book either.She warned us about the cliffhanger. Cool, I can handle a cliffhanger if I know it’s coming, plus I trust her to do it right.We’ve all been waiting for YEARS to get Abram’s story. Yay it’s finally here, I can’t wait to see how he gets his HEA.I DIDN’T READ THE BLURB!!I didn’t know what I was getting myself into!!! I’m honestly not sure if I would have gone into this story with such enthusiasm had I paid more attention but I’m so HAPPY that I was oblivious. My heart is beating so fast right now because I need to know how this plays out. I have so many theories and SO MANY fears.As expected, I’m fully in love with Abram, despite not seeing things from his POV, but my heart is also breaking for him because he doesn’t know what’s coming. Or does he?Mona is the exact type of smart and awkward heroine that I’ve come to love from Penny. Sometimes she makes me squirm but mostly I can’t help but love her. My heart breaks for her and the situation she’s been put in and how this might all play out for her in the future.I’m so scared.I’m so incredibly excited, no...I’m impatient. How will I survive the wait for more? Especially knowing that there is another cliffhanger coming.When all is said and done, it feels like not a lot happened in this book but also like SO much happened. This felt like more of just an introduction to Mona and Abram, setting the stage for what is sure to become a crazy, angsty love story. Penny is a brilliant, evil, evil woman!

But rather than its emphasizes on the infallibility of Scripture, salvation, the cross, and, conversion, Nicene Christianity, is represented as the task for the Christian faithful and Ecumenical Church to witnesses and actively engage with the 'Good News', the Father's revelation in the Gospel of Jesus. The ideal (& Christian) way to affect the message is ecumenically, in humility and modesty. The Bible and the creeds, look sometimes controversial and with competing claims to truthfulness (Take the Chaledonian Diophysite nature of Christ, without any true or apparent allusion to scripture).'Credo Catenata' Sampler:After an interesting first chapter by editor Seitz, on 'Our help is in the name of the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth,' the next four chapters have a central focus on the inquiry on Christological mystery.Alan Torrance highlights the incoherence of Arianism; if Christ is not "of one substance with the Father," then humanity's encounter with the Son is not actually an encounter with God. Gunton underlines, meanwhile, that only God has the power over sin and consequently victory over death, to the disadvantage of the wanting Arian christology. Gunton claims it as a recurrent and contemporary revisited heresy, not merely an ancient schismatic history.Jenson presents his view, on pre-foudation christology, in which the eternal Son has always been in fellowship with the Father prior to the incarnation. Athanasius has always declared: "There could not be a Father without His only begotten, eternal Son." The essays appeal to Scripture as much as to ecclesiastic history and Church tradition.The Nicene Church:Wm. Abraham spells it (I believe in One, Holy, Catholic, and apostolic church) in a short paragraph; "I began this way for two reasons. First, it illustrates a useful and long established way to focus our thinking about the church. It is very fitting and relatively easy to think in terms of images of the church. ... Second, the images employed here are intended to correct what is endemic in much thinking about the church, namely a tendency to idealize."

One can find any number of books of recent vintage on the importance and value of the Nicene Creed for the life of the modern church, some of them quite well done while a few others appear somewhat mediocre. Nicene Christianity: The Future for a New Ecumenism offers something uniquely different, while also being "quite well done." This particular work is uniquely different by virtue of its very presentation: a total of 17 "premier theologians" (says the back cover) who offer their views on the value of the creed as an ideal antidote for the divided and fractured state of the modern church, the writers themselves coming from a variety of denominational backgrounds. The panel of writers include Christopher Seitz (editor), Carl Braaten, Colin Gunton, Robert Jensen, John Webster, and Kathryn Greene-McCreight with a truly worthwhile and insightful Introduction by Philip Turner. There's much here to like.The subtitle "The Future for a New Ecumenism" is a less than subtle reminder that the ecumenical movement itself has proven (for the most part) to be somewhat of a disappointment: great and grand hopes did not materialize. Indeed, the movement appeared to dwindle down to improved relations between Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy, with much of mainline Protestantism basically reduced to looking on while offering gentle applause. The New Ecumenism hopes for something a bit more dynamic and (hopefully) a tad more successful. In any case, it's far too early to determine whether or not such fond hopes might yet be realized. Nonetheless, I view this new ecumenism as a truly hopeful beginning and one that may yet prove its worth.Readers will form their own opinions as to preferred articles and authors; I can only state here that (inclusive of Turner's Introduction mentioned above) I especially enjoyed reading Jenson, Webster, Braaten and Gunton - with the added comment that I believe Seitz did a remarkable job as editor. Seitz, in point of fact, also wrote the opening chapter: a penetrating bit of analysis in which (for some additional color...I suspect) he made reference to Jesus Seminar participant Marcus Borg (no lover of creeds...we can be certain) who is quoted (pg 21) as stating his particular preference for a "broader universal spirit" as opposed to the now hoary with age personal God of biblical faith. Borg has also repeatedly expressed his deep distaste for a Christianity that claims unique status, in a world of great religious diversity, where Jesus is proclaimed the way to salvation and the fullest revelation that God has given to us. It's all very postmodern and we know that Borg (and the Jesus Seminar in general) would have it no other way - for there is no "reigning meta-narrative"...other than postmodern thought, mind you! (One wonders if perhaps gravity - spelled with a capital "G" - might serve equally well as the broader universal spirit, seeing as how it is impersonal, invisible, possessive of power, and diffused throughout the universe...with the added comfort that no one would ever feel compelled to believe that "the fear of the universal spirit is the beginning of wisdom.") But all this is for another day.Whether or not this new ecumenism will show itself to have legs is difficult at this point to say. My own view is that I see truly great possibilities here for the future well-being of the church. And yet such a grand vision for the future clearly calls for much greater involvement on the part of the church regarding the matters addressed in these various essays, as well as some rather aggressive and active leadership towards these ends on the part of the very individuals who themselves wrote the articles. I deeply hope this book succeeds in attracting a greater readership audience in the future, and that those who are impacted by these essays (as well they should be!) will themselves become actively involved in promoting this vision of a new ecumenism as outlined in these pages - and an "ecumenism" that will display considerably greater success than what we have seen to date.So congratulations once again to Brazo Press for another true gem - and to all fellow believers who were (and are!) involved in this project. May it manifest great success in the coming years.
