Cyberpunkalicious detail make this original story an engrossing adventure of action and intrigue. Pigeonholing this into "manga" just doesn't seem right. It's just a great graphic novel. A really great science fiction story with complex themes and interesting ideas. Much more than just "manga."This edition is paperback, black and white, and takes about three hours to read. The only downside is that if you buy this and read it, you will have no choice but to buy volume 2. That said, this is a well-contained story, it just sets up the rest of the series and leaves many unanswered questions.

After falling in love with the classic 1988 film adaptation, I decided to gather some context and read the source material.I was, of course, blown away.I've never been a great consumer of comics or manga, only the absolute classics have gotten my attention, but the fantastic artwork and narrative flow of Otomo's masterpiece was enthralling. Being a manga, and not an especially wordy one, I tore through this whole 300+ page volume in under an hour, then turned around and immediately ordered the other volumes.The ideas and themes Otomo tackles in this series are famously complex and thought provoking, but they never become overpowering or discouraging due to the thorough depiction of a wonderful setting. The world these characters live in is vibrant and every bit as interesting as its cyberpunk/sci-fi mashup of a plot.I won't say or do anything to spoil the experience for the uninitiated. All I can do is sing Akira's praises in the hope more people take the time to understand one of the greatest works of fiction of the 20th century.

Akira still stands head and shoulders above the competition. The pivotal and compelling stories of a group of low-life juvenile friends who find their fast-riding life style come into a literal collision with destiny. Gorgeous as it is grandiose Akira is painstakingly detailed and remains one of the only graphic novels that can truly be described as "a labor of love". If you are a fan of graphic novels that somehow missed this one, you need to read it. Now. For fans of the film who don't normally read comics, the same applies. There really is nothing else like it, this work needs to be experienced and appreciated for what it is: A stunning work of art.

The entire AKIRA series of books is not to be missed by any fans of Akira or anime / manga in general.If you like the movie but are unsure whether to commit to buying the manga, hesitate no longer.it is 10 times better than the movie. Unlike with the movie, there is time for love, beauty, hope, sadness...I do believe, as many before me, that Akira is the best manga ever made. And I personally believe it will never be bested. It's scope and attention to detail is unparalled in my experience. I have re-read this series at least 3 times since I bought it, and it never fails to move me to tears, to shamelessly fall in love with Kei, and to be sad when I finish it. I used to work in a library and learned how to cover books. (It is a sticky transparent flexable plastic that protects the cover from spills, dogears, and strengthens the spine.) The Akira series is one of the favored few in my personal library to be covered. I want to enjoy it for years to come, and for my many nephews and nieces to be able to do the same when they get old enough.

NOTE: This description probably contains spoilers! (This review covers the first two volumes)Young, tough, motorcycle-riding gang ruffians stumble onto a bizarre government experiment in postapocalytic Tokyo in this classic manga series from Katsuhiro Otomo. The government sequesters and essentially holds captive a few hyper-aged children with a variety of bizarre powers, keeping one of them in deep hibernation, lest another apocalypse be unleashed upon the beleaguered populace of Tokyo. Badness ensues when one of the motorcycle-riding ruffians acquires one of the unique powers the government is doing its level best to control, and his powers, of course, eclipse any that have before been observed. Our new super-powered ruffian proceeds to remove Akira, the super-weapon kept in deep hibernation, from his prison, and then a game of grab-Akira-and-run occurs with the government, the ruffian, and antigovernment forces (which, being antigovernment, are of course the good guys). The art in this book is astonishing and all completely hand-drawn, and, my art friends tell me, contains some of the best manga page spreads in existence. I confess that some of the high-action scenes (many of which being double-page spreads) such as motorcycle chases and explosions were difficult for me to "decipher," but they were extraordinary nonetheless. I'd classify this as a pretty standard postapocalyptic story, with your standard government bad guys and antigovernment good guys - but that's where "standard" stops. The "weapons" in this story are people. The character development is remarkable. It's a lot to take in while reading, if you look closely at the art, which is merited. Volumes end with cliffhangers. I will continue with this series for sure. One note: in the English version of this manga, it's printed English style, that is, front-to-back, (or left-to-right) rather than the standard manga which reads back-to-front/right-to-left. It takes some getting used to.

I'm about 75 pages into this book and it is already one of the most fascinating, important, and engaging books I've ever read. And it's funny, too, which was unexpected. This should be required reading by EVERYONE. After you read this book, I can't imagine how you could not prioritize getting an 8-hour night of sleep every night. Some astounding facts:-Routinely sleeping less than 6 or 7 hours a night increases your risk of cancer by 50%.-Every species every studied, preceding the emergence of vertebrates even, sleeps. Some species can sleep with only half their brain (!!). Sleep is an incredibly risky thing for an animal to do because you are completely vulnerable to predators when you sleep. But sleep is THAT important that it was preserved by evolution.-After even one night of less than 5 hours of sleep, natural killer cells (which kill cancer cells that appear in your body EVERY DAY) drop by 70%. Nonfiction writer Simon Winchester, who has given us so many noteworthy historical books, focuses here on how Charles Dodgson's times with the Liddell family, and young Alice in particular, led to the creation of literary and photographic art. Indeed, Winchester writes much more about Dodgson's pursuit of photography than on his writing as Lewis Carroll. The book gives a fairly detailed summary of the early development of the camera, photo processing, and several of Dodgson's contemporaries in the world of mid-19th c. photography.

This is an unusually short work from Winchester, but the writing is just as good. Especially appropriate for fans of Lewis Carroll and Simon Winchester who want to know more about Charles Dodgson's fascination with young girls.

I really enjoyed this book. If you are interested in the subject matter, I think you will like it, too. At 128 pages it is a little slim: take that into account. I particularly enjoyed Winchester's evocative descriptions of what it really meant to be a photographer using the wet collodion process, and he helped me to understand that Dodgson was no casual amateur, but was actually a moderately important photographer of the era.I can't bear to give this less than four stars, so I won't, but really, the fact that it includes no photographs is an intolerable deficiency. It really needs to have twenty or thirty reproductions--and because these are works of photographic art, and because one of the reasons Dodgson used the collodion process was to capture detail, they need to be good, high-resolution reproductions.We also could use a nice photograph of an Ottewill Double Folding Camera--preferably one in the process of being unfolded "Till it looked all squares and oblongs/Like a complicated figure/In the Second Book of Euclid."The very least the publisher or author could have done would be to provide a link to a website with good reproductions of the pictures.The reason this is more than a "nice-to-have" is that a lot of the content of the book is really about Dodgson's photography. To give just one example, Winchester speaks of "the earliest photographic glimpse we have of Dodgson." He describes a photograph in great detail. I tried to find this photograph on the Web and I found one matching his description in every respect but one. The one I found shows Dodgson sitting in a chair with what looks to me like ordinary leather, while Winchester says that the back of the chair "appears to be covered in vivid and very un-Oxford-like tiger skin." Without a photo in the book, I'm left wondering if I simply found the wrong photograph, or whether Winchester somehow made a mistake, or whether I have no idea what tiger-skin upholstery looks like.Another reason for needing photographs is that I discovered by web searches that photographs of adults show vivid emotion that for me created a sense of connection between viewer and subject. The reason this is important is that it shows that Dodgson was in fact a very accomplished portrait photographer who obviously had great skill in posing and coaching his subjects. That means that when we experience a sense of intimacy in viewing his portraits of children we should not be too quick to interpret it as evidence of anything more than photographic skill.

Winchester (usually so dependably interesting and complete) spends far more time writing a technological history of photography than he does on Alice Liddell and her relationship with Dodgson.It's interesting, but it's not why I bought the book. Winchester sheds no new light on the friendship between Dodgson and the Liddell children, nor on the abrupt and mysterious breakup of that friendship.

I always thought that "Alice in Wonderland" was written under the influence of cocaine, but this book tells a much better story of a brilliant mathematician, photographer, and writer whose creativity was definately "out of the box". Although the language in this book requires a dictionary, it was fun reading something this well written and researched. Alice Liddell was captivating for Dodgson (AKA Lewis Carroll), but the true story is not the "happily ever after" I expected. Victorian Age sensibilities are the setting for a love story that borders on tragic when everyone follows the rules of etiquette and tradition, and yet out of comes one of the most incredible piece of story-telling ever written. Well worth the read--it's only missing the photos of Alice.

A medley of facts and recollections, thinnish gruel from history faint and forgotten, reminds that all life and immediacy fades away.

Skyrim introduced me to the Xbox. Can you believe that? I am a 57-year-old man in a professional job that takes a LOT of time and results in a lot of stress to dissipate. For Christmas 2011, my wife and son gave me an Xbox. It was my first console since a Colecovision in the mid-80s. I received Skyrim with the console and used my Christmas 2011 vacation to set up the box and began playing...for 14 months!! Truly, I didn't unwrap the other games (Arkham Asylum, Gears of War, Call of Duty) for more than a year. Since then, I've played the DLC Bethseda added and decided to come back to Skyrim for one good, long run before the new hardware is delivered in November and Elder Scrolls Online is released. This guide is fantastic. It is the gold standard. Publishers and their editors should use it as a reference when developing all other guides. It is as complete as one could want, easy to traverse, AND--best of all--it has an INDEX. Two, in fact. A general index and a quest index. Skyrim is the biggest and best open-world game available at the moment. It deserves a guide of matching quality and this is it.

I purchased the Elder Scrolls V, Skyrim Legendary Standard Edition, game guide by David Hodgson for my husband. I bought the game for my husband as a gift and since the game itself is huge I thought this game guide would be great. First of all this book is amazing. It has everything in there to help you succeed with playing and accomplishing parts of the game. Since the game has a lot of quest and journeys this book really helps out and makes things a little easier to understand. The book itself is of good quality and is made and put together nicely. The wording is also easy to understand and is written well. If you are trying to play Skyrim then you most definitely need to get this book.

I purchased this guide because I am an avid player/fan of Skyrim and had a real need/want to own this book/guide, but the prices for these out of print versions are either extraordinarily high or they are in very poor shape. Fortunately while browsing amazon I came across this Hard book edition for only 60 bucks and in what the seller described as very good, but in fact what I received was like new and I really couldn't be happier.This guide covers absolute everything you would want to know about Skyrim. I first played the game when it first released in 2011 on the Xbox 360 and thought I had explored every part of the game and beaten everything, but man I was wrong. I recently got back into Skyrim when I purchased Skyrim Special Edition for the Xbox One X and fell right back in love with the game which gave me the need to own this book just for collectors purposes, but upon receiving the book and reading through it I found so many things that I had never seen before or completed. It's amazing that as much time and enjoyment I poured into the original release that I missed so much content.The book itself is nicely bound with a beautiful cover and the pages inside include tons of beautiful art and screen shots from the game. This guide has to be the most absolute comprehensive guide I have ever seen or owned. There is absolutely nothing you cannot find in the 1000 plus pages that cover the main game and all DLC expansions.I cannot recommend this book enough for collectors or enthusiasts of the game. You would think that's awesome, except that what would normally be a 20 minute dungeon run now turns into 90 minutes because you want to get every item, find every word wall and kill every NPC.I tried not to depend on the book, but on some of the more complex missions, it gives you a couple options for how to finish the quest. This is great because some options are more fun than others.I don't know how many hours went into the making of this book, how many wives were left ignored while research was being done, how many trips to McDonalds were had because homemade meals were nonexistent. But what I do know is that this is the most well-researched and executed strategy guide of all time - and it also makes a great step ladder.

I just started playing Skyrim Feb 1, 2019. Since this said it was a game guide and an atlas, I really didn't know better. After playing the game for a little over a month, I was disappointed in this guide since I really couldn't find the information I needed because this guide does not have an index. In my researching online, I found that there was an indexed map. I ordered an original guide from 2011 along with the map from the bidding site. I was pleasantly surprised that the guide I had just received was about 4 times as thick, had an index, and contained all kinds of information I had to dig from many sites on the internet. Do not buy this cheap version that says Atlas, get the more expensive guide.

Yoshinkan means to "cultivate mind and spirit," and Shioda accordingly approaches Aikido, not just as a defense mechanism, but as spiritual practice and tool of self-betterment. (For a fuller but very accessible treatment of the spiritual/philosophical aspects of Aikido I recommend The Philosophy of Aikido*Total Aikido gives detailed how-to directions and -- since words alone cannot do Aikido justice -- the instruction within this book relies extensively on visual aids. Shioda incorporates detailed photography and diagrams on every page accompanied by thorough descriptions and explanations of each image. Yet, its Aiki as good as any -- in all methods presented -- as would be expected coming from Gozo Shioda -- who was barely over a hundred pounds but had a mountain of intense Aiki to extend GREAT skill. This Aiki Art is PROVEN via its many Japanese Self-Defense Force, Police and other students -- as well as those of us across the seas who have encountered Yoshinkan Aikido directly via friendly hospitality of its intense followers -- welcoming visitors to their Dojo mat one way or another. "Total Aikido" itself is presented via perfectionist illustration and explanation of the few well-chosen core methods and many well-ordered adaptations to attack-situations. Indeed, Gozo Shioda and Yasuhisa Shioda -- via Yoshinkan Aikido and this fine manual -- DO show just how "gentleness can overcome the strong" +++

Gozo Shioda was a direct student of Aikido founder Morihei Ueshiba and this experience is seen through the detail of this book. The beginning of the book goes over various basics and exercises taught in Aikido. This proves very helpful for anyone who has not actually taken an Aikido class. There is a great deal of detail for various basic moves, explaining everything from breathing to shifting weight. One of the problems with soft martial arts such as Aikido is the difficulty in performing the throws or locks if you have not had an instructor. The book helps in this by explaining key points to the technique that should be remembered as well as explaining the mechanics of it in detail. Close up and side bars providing further detail along side the clear step by step pictures of the techniques as they are being performed also make it easier to learn these moves with a partner. I would give this book a perfect score if it were not for the Japanese technique names. This book was translated from Japanese. While the names of the techniques are translated to English the explanation for how to do the technique uses traditional Japanese terms at times.For example: from Four Direction Throw 1"1-2 From migi ai-hanmi kamae, uke grabs your left wrist and pulls in a straight line. You strike with right-handed back-fist atemi to uke's face."While this is a bit of learning curve I didn't find it as cumbersome once I had the basic terminology down.As for the practical side. While Aikido does not come as easily as learning to throw a good right hook, many of the throws and joint locks can be employed without much effort once they are learned well. The techniques are presented often against traditional grabs or overhand strikes, however much of the material can be used just as readily by simply training with someone shoving, throwing a punch or going to tackle. There was a lack of kick defenses, but most people starting a street fight will not kick high anyway. The joint locks to control people are useful, especially if you are in a position where you cannot knock someone out who attacks, such as a teacher or a security guard.

I wasn't expecting anything too exciting from a children's mad-libs book. I bought this for my husband as a cute Valentine's gift and we've completed several of them together. We get a good innocent laugh out of the stories. If you're up for something more romantic, they make other mad-libs books that are more risqué.

Coming from the generation of Mad Libs, my husband and I had a great time with this on our first night away from our kids! Wine and Mad Libs, yaaaassssss!
