Like many of the other negative reviews, which I wished I had read before buying this book, I feel mislead. Not one word in the description does it say this is a Christian book. Even still once I discovered that it is Christian-based in the early pages, I thought well the concepts make sense and I will continue reading and give it a chance. But when I read on page 70 the author's key point, "People who regularly read the Bible make better decisions.", I said that is enough. So what about the many priest who regularly read the "Bible" but yet decided to molest children? And what about reading the Koran, or the Talmud, the Bhagavad Gita? Don't those religious texts provide a basis from which one can make a "good" decision? The author's premise in this book could have been made much more effective and helpful had he taken out the Christian references and been more open to accepting that other religious beliefs also lead to living a good life with happiness.

The subtitle of this book is "A True Story about Why We Sabotage Ourselves, Feel Overwhelmed, Set Aside Our Dreams, and Lack the Courage to Simply Be Ourselves... and How to Start Choosing Happiness Again" and that is quite a mouthful. But having read a number of Matthew Kelly's books over the last few years I was very excited to read this one. I must admit I read this book while rereading Rediscover Jesus, I read it through once and could not put it down, and am now reading it through a chapter a day. It was very interesting reading these two books in parallel. Matthew Kelly states in the introduction that this book is the most personal book that he has written to date. Having read a number of the others I completely agree. He has opened up and been transparent about his own faith journey, his successes, growth and failures. He is teaching by example, his example. And what a brave, courageous and motivating example it is.Matthew also shares a number of stories that he has shared before. But this is the most exhaustive collection of them, and some of them go into more details or extended versions of the stories. So this book is part autobiography, part spiritual history and part a guidebook for those of us who wish to grow in the Christian life. Matthew states in the introduction: "The hardest war to win is one you don't even realize you are fighting, and the hardest enemy to defeat is the one you don't even know exists. Every day you are at war with resistance." And he goes on from there to show us this pattern from his own life. And like many of Kelly's other writings the focus is not on him but on God, and our relationship with God, "When I did something that I knew was God's will, something that would clearly help me become a-better-version-of-myself, I was filled with joy. When I did something that I knew was wrong or was clearly not good for me, that joy began to evaporate." And is that not what Jesus promised in Matthew 5:6 'For the thief comes to steal, kill and destroy, but I have come that you might have life and have it abundantly.' How many of us would say we are truly living the abundant life? That we are living from a place of Joy? Kelly also declares "It is clear that God does not want us to be negative thinkers. But he also doesn't want our thinking to be neutral. He wants us to be positive thinkers on an epic scale." Would you say you are living that way? If not this book might open your eyes and your heart to following the Holy Spirit more.In speaking specifically about parenting and working with children Kelly says "I suppose we all need a chance to get outside ourselves and serve other people. It seems the earlier in life we get this chance in a real and tangible way- a chance to serve others, know that we have worth, discover our innate ability to make a difference in other people's lives- the better off we are." And I think about my own children and How I want them to learn to live to become the best version of themselves. We regularly read Kelly's Why Am I Here as a family, and my children often talk about decisions that help them or hinder them from being that best version of themselves. But by growing in it from the learning in this book, hopefully and prayerfully I can be a better example.One of the key takeaways I got from read this book was about self discipline, even self discipline in the little things. Matthew says "These realizations about denying ourselves, self-control, delayed gratification, and fasting are not new. They are wrapped up in two thousand years of Catholic genius. Saint Augustine wrote, "Conquer yourself and the world lies at your feet."" And learning from his examples we can start small and build to bigger disciplines. But on that same note Kelly says if we are striving to grow in discipline we will also experience greater resistance "Resistance hates discipline. It hates self-control. Resistance abhors delayed gratification and any type of self-denial that makes your heart, mind, and soul strong." He also advises us that if we want to see change we need to be part of making that change happen. "If you want to be part of an excellent parish, stop waiting for someone else to make it one. Get involved and make it an excellent parish. Resistance encourages us to take it easy and settle for mediocrity. But God created us for happiness, and he fills us with great joy as we strive for excellence, especially in the spiritual life." Matthew insists:"God wants you to live an excellent life. In that quest for excellence you will find a rare happiness."He also stresses the importance of being gentle with ourselves as part of the processs. "One of the most important reasons to be gentle with ourselves is because if we cannot forgive ourselves, we will struggle to forgive others. And if we cannot forgive ourselves or others, we will resist even God's forgiveness. When we are gentle with ourselves, when we are patient with ourselves, we develop awareness, and awareness breeds compassion. And every person who ever crosses your path needs a little compassion." And also"Be gentle with yourself, be gentle with others, and never stop striving to be all that God created you to be: the-very-best-version-of-yourself."And again he always cycles back to being who God calls us to be. He says "God designed human beings for specific purposes. When we stray from them, things tend to go wrong and we start to feel dissatisfied at best and miserable at worst. You were made for mission. You will never have lasting happiness until you realize this and act on it.".This book was an excellent read, and I know already that I will read it again soon. Matthew draws examples from his own life and a few examples from outside his life. Each chapter has a main teaching followed by a reminder of the Key Point and Action Step at the end of the chapter. This is a great read and it will inspire you.On a side note I am still waiting in anticipation for The Narrow Path that Dynamic Catholic promoted for almost a year but keeps getting pushed back but books like this one and Rediscover Jesus. But both Rediscover Jesus and this book are excellent reads, that will have immediate impact on all areas of your life if you read them with an open hear. So give this book a read or a listen all you have to lose is your resistance. And you have a world of joy and happiness to gain, true joy found only in God.

I wish someone had told me it was a religious book first. I don't mind that it is, but I might've had a different outlook with different expectations. The first couple chapters were probably the most useful but it quickly went downhill in terms of quality useable content.I remember looking at a page and thinking, "did this guy really waste 1/2-1 whole page talking about a few restaurants he knows of and could recommend...what in the world does this have to do with anything...". Easily could've been cut down to 1-2 sentences to make his 'point' of loving food. And that is how I feel about the whole book. Could've been half the number of pages, and full of a lot of useless rambles. Also, if you aren't a regular member of a church or more specifically christian, you won't be able to apply most of what is in here.Again, I don't have a problem with religion per se, but I would've appreciated a heads up to avoid this book since I don't think one religion should be touted as the cornerstone of every single persons happiness, when so many exist throughout the world.

This book is the gift that keeps on giving. If you thought Joyce Meyers " Battlefields of the mind" was good- you will love Matthew Kelly's Resisting Happiness .

My shortlist highlight are:- Great emphasis and a reminder on having a Loving God for anyone to fully appreciate and embrace the verse of "thy will be done".- Great content about self awareness and aligning it to the commitment of being the best versions of ourselves based on God's teachings.

Another inspirational book by Matthew Kelly. If your life, and especially your spiritual life, seems to be "stuck in the mud" this is the inspiration you have been looking for to put one foot in front of the other and continue your faith journey on the right path. Matthew Kelly takes us by the hand and helps us to see and recognize all the pot-holes and detours that cause us to wander off the path that God has prepared specifically for you and for me! Trust me, you will want to share this with others.

Great read. Love Matthew Kelly's take on how we fight against being happy.I'm reading it over and over as each chapter is very short, almost like adevotional.

This book presents a small amount of useful information, but it is a regurgitation of information you could find in any other self help book. On top of that, the author spends a lot of the book touting his own success. His writing oversimplifies issues of the human experience, shaming the reader into believing “if I could just pray more, serve more, behave more, be better, etc etc” then I’d be happy.

This is the first Machine Learning book I’ve read that didn’t rocket right past me in the third chapter. The author knows their stuff, but doesn’t mind slowing down and explaining what it all means in a well thought out way.

This guide explained almost everything you need to know about Python Machine Learning. Through this book, I learned this programming language in a easier and step by step approach. Overall, it was great read!!

One of the best books on probabilistic approaches to machine learning. I like that the author not only describes various techniques but also takes the time to try to pull out the intuitions behind concepts, compares techniques to help the reader understand what makes a technique special and provides a detailed bibliography so that details can be followed up in the original literature. The book covers a huge swath of material from basic theory of Bayesian reasoning all the way to recent work in deep learning models.

This is the first time that I read about the machine learning the books set is comprehensive have data from beginners to advance level. Each and everything defined step by step with the help of figures and diagram. The book is one of the best to make skills in machine learning. I will read this book again and again and follow it in my practical life for guidance.

Great book for machine learning. Tips and tricks for new apps and features are what I really like from this book, also it explains everything very well.

The book is an introduction into machine learning techniques which covers many of the topics without going into many detailed explanations.

I am grateful to Guy Armstrong for this wonderful book. I read it once, and I am starting it again. There is a lot to digest. What I like about this book is the author is making the material his own. So many books about Buddhism try to stay as close to the Pali Canon as possible -- afraid perhaps of misinterpreting the Buddha’s own words. Armstrong does not stray far, but rather than simply quoting the old words, he writes as if he owns them. It is like singing a well-known song as if it was your own song. I have not had the privilege of studying under the author in person, although I have listened to his Dharma talks available on Dharmaseed.org. His way of approaching the Dharma drew me to this book, and I am not disappointed.What a challenge, to tackle “emptiness.” He says in the book that emptiness is central to Buddhist teaching, and I believe him. Personally, I never really understood the concept. I cannot say that I completely understand it even after reading the book. This is no fault of the book, I just need to read it again (or perhaps a couple more times). However, what the book has given me so far is a good point of departure for meditation and reflection. Once again, thanks.

It was a pleasure to read this book! A very well rounded and practical look at emptiness and a curious and interesting exploration of related topics. It is relevant to both beginners as well as people with a deeper understanding and practice. I especially loved the discussions on the Ultimate, and I found it to be one of the more balanced and humble that I have come across. Guy is very clear and kind and draws on lots of personal experience plus a deep love of the various Buddhist traditions.

The book presents a difficult topic for most meditators with easy accessibility and great clarity. It is likely to become an important ongoing reference, a seminal work given the wide ranging mix of topics Guy has brought together with exceptional skill.

Excellent because it begins with the basics, travels through how one's meditation changes with continued practice and go to some good length to describe how the view of advanced meditators is markedly different from those who either have not meditated or just meditated for a short period of time. The descriptions of "abiding as emptiness" and nirvana, which are rarely present in many texts of this sort, are very welcomed and seem spot on.

Guy Armstrong is an amazing teacher and writer. His knowledge of the Buddha's teachings is wide and very deep. He elaborates on the sutras most important in understanding emptiness. The meditation practices are simple and powerful. His integrity, honesty and compassion shine through everything he writes. Guy Armstrong is worthy of Shantideva's great words:26 “Today my life has given fruit. This human state has now been well assumed. Today I take my birth in Buddha’s line, And have become the Buddha’s child and heir.27. “In every way, then, I will undertake Activities befitting such a rank. And I will do no act to mar Or compromise this high and faultless lineage.28. “For I am like a blind man who has found A precious gem inside a heap of dust. For so it is, by some strange chance, That bodhichitta has been born in me.

As the title suggests, it's a practical guide for meditators. I found the book clarified a number of things my practice had brought up for me, so it's been invaluable in reading through and discovering these nuggets. I've highlighted loads of sections and will come back to review from time to time.Also, the author takes a fresh approach to describing topics all too familiar to those of us versed in the Buddha's teachings, so it's never dull.Thank you, Guy, a wonderful read! Thoroughly recommended for anyone on the path, or anyone seeking the path.

Very good book on emptiness. Really enjoyed the first 2/3. The last 1/3 was more complex and it will definitely require more reading on my part. Overall, Guy created a good accessible book. I especially like the meditations. Already I've applied some of these concepts to my life and I've found them to be quite helpful (if not liberating).

Excellent book for meditation practitioners who have already been exposed to Buddhism. Highly readable. It introduces and explains concepts which don't come easily for many of us, in an easily digestible way.

What happens when you take a fierce, dual wielding dark elf (Drow) and throw 1000 orcs and a few giants at him? R.A. Salvatore's 'Drizzt' saga began many years with the Ice Wind Dale trilogy. The original trilogy was an excellent adventure that introduced readers to what would become the Companions of Mithral Hall: Drizzt, Wulfgar, Breunor, Regis, and Cattie-Brie. Since that time, the characters had largely stagnated, not really growing or changing as they moved from adventure to adventure. That changed with 'Spine of the World' and 'Sea of Swords' as Wulfgar began his return from the abyss and his friens began to adjust to the changes that they found in their friend. Finally, in 'The Thousand Orcs' the rest of the cast begins to explore their own inner demons.The novel opens with Drizzt and Co. beginning their trek to Mithral Hall where Breunor is to resume the throne after the previous king died. Along the way, the stumble upon the aftermath of a growing army of orcs, postponing their return to Mithral Hall. This is much to Breunor's delight, as he is not anxious to resume his duties as king, which he views as a very dull lifestyle.Regis, the halfling thief, continues to evolve following the near loss of his arm in a previous novel. He is no longer content to hide behind his friends as they fight for him. The trouble is, he doesn't know how to be more of a help without getting in the way and putting his companions in further danger. As events unfold in the novel, he has some difficult decisions to make.Cattie-Brie, facing a near death experience, makes some difficult realizations that will lead to some difficult decisions in future novels. She and Drizzt, a human and a Drow Elf, have an evolving relationship. But what can become of such a relationship? What will happen as she grows old, but Drizzt maintains his youth, inherent in the elven race? These questions plague both Cattie-Brie and Drizzt and will shape their future for novels to come.This novel has a very Tolkenesque quality to it. Readers familiar with 'The Two Towers,' either the novel or the movie, will recognize several similarities. However, Salvatore resolves things in his own way and does so in fairly satisfying fashion.This book will make the most sense if you have read the previous novels of the series, however, it is not entirely necessary. There is a lot of new material in this novel, that a new reader to the series will be able to grasp and understand without having read any of the previous works in the series. For one, all the old enemies (Entreri, Jarlaxle, etc.) are absent, so no past history is needed to understand the foes. I highly recommend this novel to any fantasy fan.

I have eagerly read book one, two, three and each one after to reach the end of this one. Sadly it ends with.......... Ahhh, Oooo, ehh, as Pikel would say, to find out, on to The Lone Drow. The "Storyteller" is a "Storyteller" to make Tolkien envious.

I enjoy fantasy fiction and started reading the Drizzt books years ago. Of the newer books some are obviously better than others.but few are as entertaining as the first dozen. It almost seems that they are not written by the original author but follow a similar story line. Several of the words used in the books I am unfamiliar with are not defined by any dictionary supported by Kindle or in any of my college edition dictionaries. I could nitpick and find faults with multiple issues but overall the story line is entertaining and I expect I will follow the series to its conclusion.

Another great book from author R.A. Salvatore. The whole Drizzt series has been a pleasure to read and this one is another great in the series. If your a fan of Forgotten Realms and Drizzt you will probably love this book. Highly recommend.

The reader is great-changing his voice in very believable ways for different characters. I also love the MP3 disc, I listen in the car and hate having to change CDs-with this they fit it all on one!

Shortly before my marriage, I got the book Sheet Music by Kevin Leman that someone had recommended to my wife and me. When I meet someone who is getting married, I do recommend they talk to someone about sexual questions and read a good book on the topic because if your information comes from TV and the movies, you’re going to be misled. That having been said, being married doesn’t mean you understand everything entirely and there’s a different dynamic when you go to actually living together as husband and wife and having to learn to relate and sex is a big part of that.Kevin Leman has written a book for the married couples. This one is in a different format. It’s in a form that’s quite humorous and easy to follow and the chapters are all relatively short. If you want to deal with one topic, just go to that topic.For instance, is your husband a sex addict, or is he just a guy? Leman in this section also has something on if the wife is the higher drive person in the marriage. (And in the words of Mark Gungor, for you men in this kind of situation, let me speak on behalf of all other men when I say “We hate you.”) The sad reality though is some guys in marriage are addicts and choose to dominate their wives instead of actually loving them.There are questions also about children and how to deal with temptation. What if it’s even to late and one has moved past the point of temptation? What if one of the persons has had an affair in the marriage or is in danger of having an affair?Leman also can be quite blunt in a humorous way. If he thinks a guy is being an idiot, he says he would love to have five minutes alone with that guy and straighten him out. Like I said, Leman’s writing style makes the book very approachable and with 25 chapters, you’re bound to find something that you need in here.Again, this book is also for those who are already married. If you are not yet married, save it and instead go with the book that I recommended. If you are married, this is something that can help men to understand women and women to understand men. We’re both very different and the area of sexuality is one where normally that difference comes up. This is beyond the obvious bodily difference. It’s also in the difference of how we feel about things and the way our bodies respond. One humorous aspect is that when we think about what a woman needs for sex. She needs to feel secure and safe and know she won’t be disturbed and have a deep and emotional connection.A man needs a place.Those differences are quite striking.Leman’s book is a humorous and a serious look at a humorous and a serious topic. As a modest Christian, this information answered many questions I had regarding intimacy: why, when, and how. I recommend this one or his audio titled "sex begins in the kitchen". This one is presented in a question and answers format which has some very helpful questions. If you prefer a "story line" approach then the other I mentioned is an audio book read by Mr Leman. Both are for the mature minded, the newly married, or those who want to and need to understand how to please their mate. Mr Leman's reading may seem monotone but he is not shy nor is he vulgar. While the recoding is dated, he still tells it to you straight.

I highly recommend this book for any couple that is looking to improve their intimacy! My husband and I have been married for 10 years. After having 3 kids, I just didn't view sex in the same way I did before kids. This book has completely changed my thinking!!! I now see just how important sex is in a marriage and after following his advice, I have experienced just how much better it can be!!! Dr. Leman shifts the focus from how to be a good lover, to how to communicate so everybody's needs are met. It is very funny and upfront! I look forward to having my husband read it as well. I am still amazed by how well Dr. Leman understands a female's perspective. He also tuned me into understanding what my husband is thinking! I can't say enough good about this book!

I am a fan of pretty much anything by Dr. Kevin Leman. He writes well and is so relate-able. This book and the one before it-Sheet Music are excellent to address current issues within marriage or even to prevent possible future issues.

Readable; covers many issues Christians usually don't want to talk about (oral sex!!!???); should be read by young couples immediately preparing for marriage. We bought it for our son and his bride for a wedding present.

Gives an honest view on the importance of the sexual relationship between a husband and wife in a biblical perspective...very relative and realistic - good read for both husbands and wives. I will get this book as a wedding gift when they get married.

A practical guide for the married couple. It addresses a lot of concerns and questions couples may have in a way that is informative and non-threatening. Not too preachy either, but a no-nonsense guide to addressing areas that could cause future pit-falls in a marriage relationship.

Interesting book. Good for people who have trouble enjoying sex as a natural and healthy part of a marriage. Deals with abuse recovery and communication skills.
