Gunton underlines, meanwhile, that only God has the power over sin and consequently victory over death, to the disadvantage of the wanting Arian christology. Gunton claims it as a recurrent and contemporary revisited heresy, not merely an ancient schismatic history.Jenson presents his view, on pre-foudation christology, in which the eternal Son has always been in fellowship with the Father prior to the incarnation. Athanasius has always declared: "There could not be a Father without His only begotten, eternal Son." The essays appeal to Scripture as much as to ecclesiastic history and Church tradition.The Nicene Church:Wm. Abraham spells it (I believe in One, Holy, Catholic, and apostolic church) in a short paragraph; "I began this way for two reasons. First, it illustrates a useful and long established way to focus our thinking about the church. It is very fitting and relatively easy to think in terms of images of the church. ... Second, the images employed here are intended to correct what is endemic in much thinking about the church, namely a tendency to idealize."

One can find any number of books of recent vintage on the importance and value of the Nicene Creed for the life of the modern church, some of them quite well done while a few others appear somewhat mediocre. Nicene Christianity: The Future for a New Ecumenism offers something uniquely different, while also being "quite well done." This particular work is uniquely different by virtue of its very presentation: a total of 17 "premier theologians" (says the back cover) who offer their views on the value of the creed as an ideal antidote for the divided and fractured state of the modern church, the writers themselves coming from a variety of denominational backgrounds. The panel of writers include Christopher Seitz (editor), Carl Braaten, Colin Gunton, Robert Jensen, John Webster, and Kathryn Greene-McCreight with a truly worthwhile and insightful Introduction by Philip Turner. There's much here to like.The subtitle "The Future for a New Ecumenism" is a less than subtle reminder that the ecumenical movement itself has proven (for the most part) to be somewhat of a disappointment: great and grand hopes did not materialize. Indeed, the movement appeared to dwindle down to improved relations between Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy, with much of mainline Protestantism basically reduced to looking on while offering gentle applause. The New Ecumenism hopes for something a bit more dynamic and (hopefully) a tad more successful. In any case, it's far too early to determine whether or not such fond hopes might yet be realized. Nonetheless, I view this new ecumenism as a truly hopeful beginning and one that may yet prove its worth.Readers will form their own opinions as to preferred articles and authors; I can only state here that (inclusive of Turner's Introduction mentioned above) I especially enjoyed reading Jenson, Webster, Braaten and Gunton - with the added comment that I believe Seitz did a remarkable job as editor. Seitz, in point of fact, also wrote the opening chapter: a penetrating bit of analysis in which (for some additional color...I suspect) he made reference to Jesus Seminar participant Marcus Borg (no lover of creeds...we can be certain) who is quoted (pg 21) as stating his particular preference for a "broader universal spirit" as opposed to the now hoary with age personal God of biblical faith. Borg has also repeatedly expressed his deep distaste for a Christianity that claims unique status, in a world of great religious diversity, where Jesus is proclaimed the way to salvation and the fullest revelation that God has given to us. It's all very postmodern and we know that Borg (and the Jesus Seminar in general) would have it no other way - for there is no "reigning meta-narrative"...other than postmodern thought, mind you! (One wonders if perhaps gravity - spelled with a capital "G" - might serve equally well as the broader universal spirit, seeing as how it is impersonal, invisible, possessive of power, and diffused throughout the universe...with the added comfort that no one would ever feel compelled to believe that "the fear of the universal spirit is the beginning of wisdom.") But all this is for another day.Whether or not this new ecumenism will show itself to have legs is difficult at this point to say. My own view is that I see truly great possibilities here for the future well-being of the church. And yet such a grand vision for the future clearly calls for much greater involvement on the part of the church regarding the matters addressed in these various essays, as well as some rather aggressive and active leadership towards these ends on the part of the very individuals who themselves wrote the articles. I deeply hope this book succeeds in attracting a greater readership audience in the future, and that those who are impacted by these essays (as well they should be!) will themselves become actively involved in promoting this vision of a new ecumenism as outlined in these pages - and an "ecumenism" that will display considerably greater success than what we have seen to date.So congratulations once again to Brazo Press for another true gem - and to all fellow believers who were (and are!) involved in this project. May it manifest great success in the coming years.

About the Author

Dr. Purich earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1973 for his kinetic characterization of brain hexokinase under the preceptorship of Professor Herbert J. Fromm in the Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics at Iowa State University. As a Staff Research Fellow with Dr. Earl Stadtman at the National Institutes of Health, he conducted research on the cascade of covalent interconverting enzymes that control the glutamine synthetase reaction in Escherichia coli. Dr. Purich subsequently joined the Department of Chemistry at the University of California Santa Barbara where he rose through the ranks as Assistant Professor (1973-78), Associate Professor (1978-82), and Professor (1982-84). At UC Santa Barbara, he was awarded an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow in Chemistry (1978-80), an NIH Research Career Development Award (1978-1983), and the Campus-wide Outstanding Teacher Award (1978). In 1984, he assumed the post of Professor and Chairman of the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at the University of Florida College of Medicine, and in 1996 he retired as Chairman to resume full-time activities as a professor. Dr. Purich has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Biological Chemistry (1981-87) and Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics (1975-85), and as a regular member of the NIH Biochemistry Study Section. Professor Purich succeeds the late Alton Meister as series editor for Advances in Enzymology, and he continues to edit the multi-volume treatise "Enzyme Kinetics & Mechanism" appearing as volumes 63, 64, 87, and 249 in Methods in Enzymology. He has also published Contemporary Enzyme Kinetics and Mechanism (1st ed.,1983; 2nd ed.,1996) based on chapters selected from his Methods volumes.

I was not disappointed.The book asks, “What's at stake for you”? The simple answer is everything. Julian’s book methodically walks us through how sound, speaking and listening, influence our lives, both positively and negatively. This is a great read for anyone that is looking to improve their communication skills, whether it be for personal or professional reasons. I am involved in Leadership Training and find many in the business world have communication skills that have atrophied in today's digital environment of e-mails, IMs, and texts. If you are someone who is looking to improve these critical skills, this is the book for you.

I would not be exaggerating to say this book changed my life. I had seen Julians TED talk and wanted to learn more. one of my main issues was that I always felt like I was not being heard and was frequently talked over . This lead to a number of communication issues especially in high pressure situations .I picked up the audio book and was floored . this book is masterfully written and the suggestion Julian makes all work they are not puff pop psychology they are legitimate skills that can turn you into the person in the everyone listens to in the room. These skills take practice especially avoiding the deadly sins of speech but the results are incredible.I was able to obtain employment in a customer facing role that I was woefully under qualified for, the interviewers all felt that at the end of the day they I was the one they kept coming back too. They said my communication was the most memorable.This book will improve your life. I also recommend Amy Cuddy's Presence . This book mention her and I followed up from there.

Reading this clearly shows that Julian is a very experienced and professional listener and speaker. I watched most of his amazing speeches and in book he reveals what he does to bring it over the right way. Lots to learn, practice and experience. Love it!

Love his routine to do before a speech. Very easy to follow. Some of it is not super useful, but interesting throughout.

This is the first book that I have read by this author and it was very entertaining. As another reviewer stated this truly is the story of a stranger in a strange land. Delisle was in China for work and that was the focus of his activities, he was not there to travel or discover things about the country. It is interesting to see the reactions on both sides of when he did try to interact with the Chinese (I particularly like their response to how overtime is handled in the Canada). There is a sense of loneliness and depression that permeate the book as the author tries to set up a daily and weekly routine and find activities to break the boredom. This however is offset by his thoughts on his experiences and the anecdotal stories from his life that he intersperses with the China stories.I like that he showed the people trying to be good "hosts" to a visitor to their country and entertain him to the best of their ability - what was funny was his slightly puzzled reaction to these efforts. The drawing were simple and clean but conveyed people's reactions well and clearly showed the context of the situations he was describing. I enjoyed this novel and have bought more of the books in his travel series to see what happened to him in Burma and North Korea

After reviewing Pyongyang, which I found very interesting and have already reread a couple of times, I ordered his other books, one of them being this one. I happen to love everything about Japan, China, and other Asian nations, so as you can guess I enjoyed this book very much. Yes, I have reread it a couple of times even before doing this review. In some ways Mr. Delisle didn't really tell us anything we haven't heard before a hundred times. Yet I think some of the events, some of the happenings that happened to him, were interesting in the way he presented them to us. Maybe because he deals with the world in the form of shapes and forms and interactions, that he wants to understand cause and effect, and how things work.There is no racism or buckteeth, not sure where one of the reviews got that, he just truly enjoys learning. I get the impression that he wants to understand just for the fun of it. He desires, in the end, to understand people, why they do things and uncover life's little mysteries. Like, who is stealing the manhole covers? Was the girl who put the photo albums on his desk in love with him? Why do the hostesses on the train give a military salute when they pull into the station?Get it used or new, but enjoy it.

Because of his unique perspective as an invited animator, Delisle is able to insert himself into ordinary life in a large Chinese city without being constantly being 'managed' by state 'handlers'. The results are wry, and often very effective in stripping a rapidly changing society. He is very straightforward, without being condescending to the many people that he interacts with daily. He even gets in a little Shanghai and Hong Kong to boot! A new paradigm for both the travelogue and the 'graphic novel' formats.

It's a little smaller and more roughly drawn but you'll still get the same "flavor" of Guy DeLisle's perspective. Obviously, he sees a China different from that of a farmer, laborer, or state bureaucrat so there's still insulation from all the human rights abuses but what you do get is a picture of life in a big up-and-coming industrial city.If you want a little taste of life as a tourist or a business visitor, this is a good start especially considering the pictures. There is some of the usual analysis you've come to expect but not to the extent in his other works.

I first came to Shenzhen a year or two after Delisle spent his three months in the city, and I have been here since. Mr. Delisle should have gotten out a bit more and tried to get to know more expats at least, although understandable because his time was limited. There's no reason for a dull moment here. Nevertheless, many of his observations were spot on and made me chuckle about how things were and how some are still the same. The physical city has changed and it is so much easier to live a life with the comforts expats expect. Likewise, the outlook of the people here is much more cosmopolitan than before--although there are still many moments of cultural disjunction.The inherent story of Shenzhen isn't as compelling as his book on Pyongyang, but Delisle has found plenty of observations that keep the book flowing fast. It's great snapshot of a city in the midst of a huge transformation. (BTW, that 15 story windowless building you saw once, but never saw again. It's a parking structure that is still around.)

Guy Delisle is a master storyteller. This book (and series) is highly recommended for all who like to travel or have been expats before

Delisle's various travelogues (involving China, North Korea, Israel, and Burma/Myanmar) are fascinating accounts of travel, discovery, disappointment, and delight. Though he often visits parts of the world that are dangerous or depressing, he always comes away with insightful cartoons as a result. Now, if only we can convince him to keep going to dangerous/inhumane locations...

Love the sense of humor. Not his best book, but definitely entertaining with a lot of truth!
