About the Author

La Rochefoucauld (1613-1680) was a French classical author who was one of the most active rebels of the Fronde before becoming the leading proponent of the maxime, a French literary form of epigram that expresses severe or contradictory facts with brevity. La Rochefoucauld published only two works, the Mémoires and the Maximes. “The steadfastness of the wise is but the art of keeping their agitation locked in their hearts.” (I’ll put in some more of my favorite quotes after each paragraph I write)François Duc De La Rochefoucauld was a French philosopher who lived 1613-80. This work, known widely as simply the Maxims, was his greatest accomplishment, and one of the defining works characterizing the thought of the French people as a whole during the latter 17th century. It’s certainly not what we are used to from philosophy, neither structured logical deductions, nor rigorous narrative. Rather, the Maxims is just what its name implies, full of mostly single sentence maxims, about 504 of which were published during his lifetime and another 136 only appearing posthumously. Do not be deceived by the simple nature of mere sentences though. La Rouchefoucauld published these individual insights into human nature as his entire life’s work.“Desire to appear clever often prevents our becoming so.”Written with only a loose organization, each individual maxim truly can stand alone as a single thought without much connection to its surroundings. They are mostly his philosophy of human nature written out of careful observations throughout his life. While alive, he was at times celebrated, others destitute, some famous, yet even more circumstances left him brokenhearted. However, his life was not so much different from a normal one like ours. What marks La Rochefoucauld out is his capacity for introspection and keen observation which penetrated the surface appearances as a type of x-ray into the heart of the human person.“Nobody deserves to be praised for goodness unless he is strong enough to be bad, for any other goodness is usually merely inertia or lack of will power.”This is, by all definitions, an absolutely terrifying read. As I made my way through, I had to keep a pencil nearby to star all of the maxims that were particularly insightful for me. I cannot say that I have read any other book, besides perhaps Albert Camus’ The Stranger (Link to my review), that I felt got behind my skin and into the secrets of my heart. As a Christian, this work was an examination of our common tendency towards self-righteousness, as well as a warning against thinking too highly of our own potential, individual or collective apart from God’s help.“We own up to minor failings, but only so as to convince others that we have no major ones.”La Rouchefoucauld was especially talented at exposing the reasons why people often act virtuously. Bad events seem to strike at the most inopportune times, right when our path should have turned for the better. However, once we reach the other end of the tunnel, we think we have learned a lesson, only to make the same mistake once more.“Old people are fond of giving good advice; it consoles them for no longer being capable of setting a bad example.”Perhaps most significantly, La Rouchefoucauld spoke out against personal self-righteousness in moral matters. When we try to portray ourselves as having overcome huge obstacles, the stakes weren’t as high as we might try to tell ourselves. When we introduce ourselves to others, we try to appear as good as possible and ignore all of our moments of vice. When we do a good act, we try to make it seem like it came out of our virtuous character rather than appearing out of habit or the desire to look good oneself.“The man who thinks he loves a woman for her own sake is very much mistaken.”He thought our acts of goodness accompanied with pure intentions were much more rare than we would like to think, or than we would proclaim to others. We say our own good character and free will were behind all the good deeds we do.“When we resist our passions it is more on account of their weakness than our strength.”As a work, the Maxims should definitely be read by anyone who wants to think through the human condition with the aide of one of the foremost philosophers in our history. Likewise, though reward is an element of our relationship with God, our love for God should always move far beyond merely what God can do for us. In response to the Maxims, we should hope for a much greater ability to help others out of pure motives, and to practice self-sacrifice in love.“We have more strength than will-power, and when we imagine things are impossible we are trying to make excuses to ourselves.”“We are never as fortunate or as unfortunate as we suppose.”“Our promises are made in proportion to our hopes, but kept in proportion to our fears.”

This tranalation lacks the elegance and wit of the Kronenberger translation. To enjoy the Duc's observations, look for a copy of that version, published by Random House in 1959.#9, for instance, in Kronenberger is "The passions are so selfish and unjust that, even when they seem most reasonable, to indulge them is a danger, to defy them a duty." This edition renders the maxim in a much more pedestrian way: "Our passions are so governed by injustice and self-interest that they are dangerous guides, suspect them most when they appear most logical."I am not convinced that fundamental passions are govened by intellect, logic or reason.

Were he around today he would likely have his own talk show. A great read for someone who loves philosophy without the attached pretension.

La Rochefoucauld has a reputation as a cynic, but being called cynical can be an occupational hazard for truth tellers, . Many of his sayings are quite breathtaking to this lover of truth. Highly recommended. This is a well-translated edition.

About the Author

Michael Terry, MD, is the head team physician for the Chicago Blackhawks and a team physician for Northwestern University Athletics and the U.S. Olympic volleyball team. He is also the sports medicine program director and the Dr. Charles and Leslie Snorf Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Northwestern University. Terry graduated with honors from the University of Illinois with a degree in mechanical engineering and a concentration in bioengineering. He then attended the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, where he again graduated with honors and received the top honor in surgical specialties and in clinical medicine. Terry completed a residency at Cornell University's prestigious Hospital for Special Surgery, where he was part of a team that was awarded one the most coveted research awards in shoulder surgery, the Neer Award. He then traveled to Vail, Colorado, for his sports medicine fellowship at the renowned Steadman Hawkins clinic. Prior to joining the team at Northwestern, Terry was a faculty member at the University of Chicago. While there, he performed research and maintained a very busy practice in sports medicine and shoulder surgery. His medical school students selected Terry as their favorite faculty member. Paul Goodman is the strength and conditioning coach for the Chicago Blackhawks and is responsible for preparing yearlong on- and off-ice training regimens for all players within the organization. He also works in conjunction with the sports medicine staff by assisting in the rehabilitation process for injured athletes. Goodman joined the Blackhawks after serving six years as head strength and conditioning coach at the University of Vermont (UVM). In 2006, the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) named Goodman the State/Provincial Director of the Year, and he also was a finalist for the NSCA’s College Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year award. In addition to UVM, Goodman also spent time with USA Women’s Hockey and the New York Rangers. Goodman is a 1996 graduate of the University of Wisconsin, and he received his master’s degree in 2002 while serving as a member of the Wisconsin Badgers’ strength and conditioning staff. He achieved a second master’s degree in applied exercise science from Concordia University of Chicago, where he is currently in pursuit of his PhD in health and human movement.

My son plays hockey and gets private physio lessons. $$$$. This book is super helpful by detailing exercises that are specific to hockey. He is now a a lot more interested in physio, (which is essential) because there are a ton of small muscle exercises, as opposed to simply working the quads etc. that he was accustomed to in generic physio workouts. Highly recommend. It gets into a lot more detail with variations of exercises. He is just not there yet. They can get very intensive. Working on it!

As a strength coach it is imperative that I understand the "whys" of what I provide my athletes. Everything is done for a reason and the more I understand those "whys" the better my product and the results it produces will be. What Paul and Dr. Terry have laid out in Hockey Anatomy is not only the "whys" of exercises and their placement in a program, but a simple and digestible "how" as well. Each exercise in this guide to performance is presented in a way that will give you an understanding of how to do the movement properly and why it's applicable to the athlete and the game they play. This has given me a greater understanding of my "whys" and I am more confident in my product than ever. And if that were not enough, options for each exercise are given to widen your menu and help you progress and regress as is inevitably needed in our line of work. This is a top notch educational resource for everyone from strength coaches to players to parents and coaches that want to understand how to provide sound strength training and conditioning that will produce more resilient and productive athletes.

John Williams demonstrates his clear command of the topic by the amount of research he puts into it. Literally, any mention of Liverpool FC in the newspaper during the first 50 years or so is in there. He's very strong in building the club's "ancient" history, but after World War II, he condenses a lot of information into relatively quick summaries of each of the managers. The beginning and ending of the book are like night and day in regards to how much detail is in there. Clearly, as he admits in his introduction, he gives a favorable amount of space to the beginnings of the club because of the lack of knowledge of this period. However, as an American fan just learning about the club, I would like to know more about Shankly and Paisely and the "boot room" then how much tickets were in 1912. Those seem more relative to the modern team. It makes the first half a little tedious because he nearly goes season by season while describing big games and the pros and cons of different signings. In the second half, the part I was really interested in learning about, he moves at lightspeed, clearing a decade in a matter of pages. The most famous example in the 1977 Champions League final. After describing a failing seasons final game in the 1920's during the first half, Williams virtual ignores the entire 1977 UEFA Final. He gives no attention to the game itself and offers only a page and a half describing how a bunch of fans made the trek to Rome. He does give a fair amount of explanation to the Heysel and Hillborough disasters and the circumstances leading up to them. All in all, as a history professor, I applaud him on his detail for the early years, but was a disappointed to the lack of such detail for the final 40 years. A good read overall.

My boyfriend is a huge Liverpool fan, and this has made a beautiful addition to our coffee table. He hasn't finished reading it yet, but it is a really nice quality hardcover that we will definitely pass on to our future generations of red fans also. Great purchase!

Enjoyable, quick read. Recommended for any fan of the Reds, or just anyone who is generally curious about the history of England's finest football club.

This is a great history of the club for any fans of Liverpool FC or football fans in general. It goes all the way back before the formation of the league, to the founding of Everton FC and the Liverpool split, through two world wars, and all the highs and lows of the club over the years in between. If you've always wondered why so many people around the world love Liverpool FC, this book will give you an idea why.

Good book, a little stodgy in the early going, but a good biography nonetheless. You can tell Williams is a fan, even though the book is impartial.

There is nothing like the history of Liverpool. In this book you'll find all of it. It is a must read for long time fans and newcomers that want to learn more about the rich history of a fantastic football club

The early history has great facts, but the writing gets a little repetitive at times. Good,solid book. A very informative summa of the clubs culture and history.

When Glenn Randall says the "art, science, & craft" of great landscape photography, he means it. This book is rich with technical details on the making of wonderful images. There are so many topics covered I'd literally never even thought of that it blew my mind.Since I'm a sucker for Colorado landscapes, I was instantly drawn in and had trouble putting it down. While it is very, very technical, he manages to make it a fairly easy read. And it's hard to deny that he knows what he's talking about once you view the photos featured in this book. I couldn't find one that wasn't stunning.I've only been learning photography for a little over a year, and this book is without a doubt my most in depth read to date(and I've read a ton). But I've truly enjoyed it and feel like the details in this book are what I need to take my photography to the next level. I can't wait for an upcoming trip to Colorado to test out some new ideas I've gotten from this book.I won't lie, I'm likely going to need to go back and re-read the whole thing again. But with all the wonderful imagery in it, that doesn't feel like much of a task.Overall, I can highly recommend this book for the serious amateur shooters or professionals. It might be a little too dense for a first book for the budding photographer, but you'll at least enjoy the photos in it.

Outstanding book! Often you find a book that shares maybe 3-5 valuable tidbits for your to focus on- this book is different. Within the first 45 pages or so, I found myself writing down many key learns. More and more great tips followed until the end. An example of this is the use of graduated ND filters...I found this section easy to understand and the tips for getting results helpful. The format of the accompanying photos and text really make well and drive home the teaching points. Glenn shares lots of tips for getting the light right for your landscape photography- when stars align to a specific location, sun rise in the sky based upon a location you want to photography- it is all about being prepared and planning well. Highly recommended book and will re-read this again to make sure I stay sharp.

This is a great book!! I first bought the Kindle edition and read it, but have since purchased a hard copy. If you are just getting into landscape photography this book might be more detail then you want. Also, if you are looking for camera settings and equipment for landscape photography this is not your book. But if your ready to move on to the next level, it is great. This book has detailed information on several topics related to natural light, color, the physiology and psychology of what a person sees when looking at a photograph and more. I did not understand all of it on first pass so I am reading it a second time and find I am learning things I missed. I highly recommend this book.

As a Taiwanese, after taking shots of Taiwan landscape focusing on HDR panorama for the past 6 years, I am looking for ways to improvemy alpine photography. This book from an author with 22 years full-time landscape photographer, has shared experiences, provided knowledge,given information & insights, and evoked inspiration (wonderment!) that goes far beyond my original expectation.On HDR. My goal in capturing HDR landscape image has always been natural-looking rather than surreal. Before this book, never have Iseen landscape images by use of HDR technique that looks so natural! Glenn’s use of Lightroom to tone-map 32-bit TIFF and the rest is aneye-opening approach to me. Although Glenn does not specify which HDR software he uses to create 32-bit HDR image file which accordingto Christian Bloch of HDRI Handbook 2.0 is critical. Nevertheless, Glenn’s approach has resulted in a high-contrast image that looks bothbeautiful and believable.On panorama. My works on panoramic landscape image has gone to the stage that advices on multi-row panorama is what I need. Glennaddresses multi-row panorama formally that I do not find in other landscape photography books. His full cross-page work “The Milky WayOver Huron Peak” on p.178 - 179, a 4 by 10 (4 rows, 10 frames per row. Each frame takes 10’s of second for exposure) or total 40-framemulti-row panorama at night is an once-in-a-lifetime shot that any landscape photographer can possibly encounter or accomplish. I echowith Glenn that taking a walk on the wide side (panorama), and you you’ll never again be content to see the world in just one way.By complete reading this book from cover to cover, some chapters more than once, in a month, I will no longer see the world of alpinelandscape photography in the same way.

This book is fantastic. The author packs a lot of information in this book. It's not about the basics of exposure. You need to understand all of that before reading this book. It's about understanding how to capture great landscape photographs, key techniques to process them, and the basic science behind vision and things like rainbows to give you a better understanding of how to capture them. The chapters on processing multiple exposures to achieve the equivalent of using filters (but better - think irregular shapes on the horizon) are well worth the price of the book alone. To be clear on what I mean by processing, it's blending and minor adjustments. He does talk about HDR, but only for producing natural images to more closely simulate what the eye sees vs. the dynamic range of the camera. This is not a book about plugins, replacing skies, or any trickery. If that's what you are after, you'll want to look elsewhere.I can't recommend the book highly enough.

Bought this book along with the 8th Edition. The Wiley interactive test engine questions continually repeat themselves. Wiley needs to implement an algorithm that is more of an adaptive testing format that simulates the real test environment. Been studying for the test since February this year and took a 2 week CISSP review course this past week and tested on 10 August. None of the questions came even close to the actual exam in terms of style, syntax, or grammar. Needless to say I did not achieve a passing score using this book and test engine scoring over 90%. I have an MS Degree in IT, CompTIA Security + CE certified and have other certifications in Project Management Software Development Security, and Security Enterprise Architecture. I would say that you have to dig deep on each domain and not just understand concepts at the surface. If you point to a topic and can’t intelligently explain the concepts, you are not ready to take the real exam regardless how many practice tests you take. I would purchase this book if you want to practice concepts at the surface, but certainly will not solely help you with the real exam.

The questions are so so but the real kicker is the website to take online tests is horribly slow and hard to find. The creators of this should take a tip from the content and improve the web availability. I'd return this if I could.

Some of the items are just not correct, and a majority of others are at the wrong level of detail. The previous version of this book was much, much better. Just my humble opinion. I'd look elsewhere.Edit- This book is terrible. Do not use. The author rewrites questions from the old book and changes the language which often times makes the answers wrong. This is a poorly written and inaccurate version of the old book with a few questions added.For instance in this book - Segmentation, sequencing, and error checking all occur at what layer of the OSI model that is associated with SSL, TLS, and UDP? Answer (Transport Layer) Just wrong. Session layer for TLS and SSL and Transport Layer for UDP.Comparison(Old Book) - Lauren uses the ping utility to check whether a remote system is up as part of a penetration testing exercise. If she wants to filter out ping by protocol, what protocol should she filter out from her packet sniffer's logs? ICMP.... Makes Sense(This Book) - Lauren uses the ping utility to check whether a remote system is up as part of a penetration testing exercise. If she does not want to see her own ping packets, what protocol should she filter out from her packet sniffer’s logs? True, but it doesn't make sense because she wouldn't see the replies either... just dumb.

This book covers absolutely nothing on the exam. **Nothing** Instead; it sends you off memorizing scores of irrelevant material. None of it appears on the exam. The topics are wrong, the level of detail is wrong, the focus is wrong, the terminology is completely different from the actual test. This book will have you memorizing hyper specific details that have nothing to do with anything. You may as well memorize a phone book.I bought this book, studied and passed all 12 exams in it, by comfortable margins - then studied every question I got wrong. No help, since this book is unrelated to the test.Even the author's questions on his own topics are often wrong. He'll use a question twice, but it has different answers in different chapters. Incorrect database terminology too.Don't buy this piece of crepe from a lazy author. He just recirculated some questions from an older book. It's garbage.

Some of the questions make you think, and then when you go back to the SYBEX book you can't find a reference that explains it in the context of the question. But then some questions I think the answers are wrong for example the question on page 130 number 10. I believe the answer should be A after looking it up in the book referenced aicpa website.

This is super-helpful, it helped me pass the exam. What is really useful about the book is that it gets you a year subscription to the online testing system that automates these practice exams. You can use this with your kindle on the go and use the interactive web version when you are on your desktop computer. Just one warning, there are a lot of older versions of this guide for sale floating around on Amazon. The CISSP test changes all the time. This was the most current version as of the time that I took the exam, but they refresh the material at least bi-annually. Make sure that you are getting the latest edition.

Enjoyed using this as a practice resources. Did everything in learning quiz mode when I completed domains in the Offical Study Guide. Then did a retake on the questions I got wrong. The types of questions help prepare you for what’s types are on the exam..like click and drag items. I would use this resource in combination with the Offical Study Guide and enroll in CertMike.com to setup a weekly plan for learning. The learning videos offer exam tips.

After doing the domain tests, I delayed my exam a month. They are hard tests. Going to take exam January. This is a fantastic and absolutely necessary tool. Don’t let it be disheartening when you mess up the domain tests, just learn from them. Trust me when I say, use this and maybe 11th hour for a summary and the free skill set videos on YouTube and you will pass. Good luck.
