Review

Fans of Zafón’s The Shadow of the Wind and new readers alike will be delighted with this gothic semiprequel. In 1920s Barcelona, David Martin is born into poverty, but, aided by patron and friend Pedro Vidal, he rises to become a crime reporter and then a beloved pulp novelist. David’s creative pace is frenetic; holed up in his dream house—a decrepit mansion with a sinister history—he produces two great novels, one for Vidal to claim as his own, and one for himself. But Vidal’s book is celebrated while David’s is buried, and when Vidal marries David’s great love, David accepts a commission to write a story that leads him into danger. As he explores the past and his mysterious publisher, David becomes a suspect in a string of murders, and his race to uncover the truth is a delicious puzzle: is he beset by demons or a demon himself? Zafón’s novel is detailed and vivid, and David’s narration is charming and funny, but suspect. Villain or victim, he is the hero of and the guide to this dark labyrinth that, by masterful design, remains thrilling and bewildering. (June) -- Publishers Weekly, starred ReviewAnother delicious supernatural mystery from bestselling Catalan author Zafón (The Shadow of the Wind, 2005).Mix Edgar Allan Poe with Jorge Luis Borges, intellectual mysterian Arturo Pérez-Reverte, and maybe add a dash of Stephen King, and you have some of the makings of Zafón’s sensibility. Fans of his earlier book will be pleased to find themselves on patches of familiar ground, including a revisit to that wonderful conceit, the Cemetery of Forgotten Books. Indeed, this is a prequel–but only of a kind: Familiar figures turn up at points, only to seem less than familiar as the narrative twists and turns. The none-too-heroic hero, David Martín, is an aspiring journalist who bucks hackwork to turn in a crowd-pleasing series for a tough boss. This leads him into an onerous contract with the usual crooked publishers and, indirectly, into a rivalry with his former mentor–all of which, naturally, entails love triangles and smoldering egos. The picture is complicated by the arrival of another curious publisher, Andreas Corelli, who offers David piles of pesetas to write, well, a book of a different sort, involving research that yields piles of corpses and occasions ample cliffhangers. Zafón has a fine talent for inserting unexpected hitches into a story line already resistant to graphing, whose outcome is definitely not seen from afar. The plot resolves in a rush, for the author finds himself with many a loose end to tie up, but once it sinks in, the result is more than satisfying. Zafón delivers a warning about the dangers of obsession, mixed with an obvious passion for literature and the printed word; his book is also a song of love for Barcelona with all its creaking floorboards and hidden subbasements.A nice fit with the current craze for learned mysteries and for spooks of both the spying and the spectral kind. -- Kirkus ReviewsPraise for The Shadow of the Wind “One gorgeous read”—Stephen King“Diabolically good”—Elle magazine “Superbly entertaining”—Washington Post“Breathtaking”—New York Times“Wondrous”—Entertainment Weekly“Magic”—New York Times Book Review“Absolutely marvelous”—Kirkus“Infectious”—The Economist“Outstanding”—Library Journal“Lavish”—Booklist“Gripping”—Philadelphia InquirerFrom the Hardcover edition.

The only reason I do not give 5 stars to this excellent book is that the ending left behind a huge question, as another reviewer correctly points our. I do not want to give away plot elements so I will not discuss what it is. The plot and characters are excellent and the second half of the book had more tension and urgency than The Shadow of the Wind. I believe maybe some knots were not tied at the end because the author will revisit this in his 3rd book ( or 4th as I understand he published late last year a 4th book in thios series. It feels a little like any middle installment in a series, for example Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy, where The 2 Towers suffers slightly from being the middle installment.Having said all that, if you speak Spanish read it in Spanish. I read The Shadow of the Winds in English and this one ion Spanish and of course theoriginal version is slightly more clear as to what the author is saying. With that said, I recommend this book most heartily but make plans to read the next installments. It is rare these days to read a book ( or books as I read the first one as well) of such high quality literary level, complex characters and great plot twists. I will follow rthis author.

If you start in Chapter 40 of Act 2 [Kindle loc. 6122] "Ella le llama el patrón. . .", you'll be starting at an exposition which, in a few paragraphs, pretty much summarizes everything up to that point, and avoiding the mind-numbing, metaphysical and spiritual badminton between David and his sponsor.I enjoyed Book #1 of this series, but this second book felt like it was shoehorned together from barely connected stories. When Isabella was introduced, it looked like we'd be treated to some quality wit-pitting with David, as we were with Fermín and Daniel in Book #1, but her character disappeared into a weak connection with the earlier tome.Again, the main, female love interest [Christina] is thinly sketched. The denouement is exciting and entertaining, but it takes 600+ pages to get to it.All action occurs at the end of a dark _____ [hallway, passage, room, cable car]. No drama occurs where lightning is adequate! There is a Spanish-language audio version of this book. Good to have for those wanting practice with pronunciation, cadence, etc.

I have read all four books of the series. We will be visiting Barcelona next month, though I’m sure it has changed a lot.

I have read all of Zafón's books and this one was my favorite. You see, feel and experience everything that goes on, walking down those mystical streets of an old Barcelona. I enjoyed and savored every page. It is hard to not read it from start to end because the mystery and the complexity of the characters is unparalleled. The characters are so profound and rich that you are able to see the world through so many eyes. Zafón's funny and witty tone adds the finishing touch to a story that is extremely well written. An amazing journey! and one of the best books I've ever read.

Increiblemente genial.

Right off the bat, if you're autistic like me and have trouble understanding idioms, this product will surely knock your socks off. There are many idiom books out there, but I heard through the grapevine that this book was the cream of the crop. Now I usually take advice like that with a grain of salt, but I'm happy I went out on a limb and buried my head in the sand with this one, because it has truly made understanding idioms a piece of cake. It's a shot in the arm to know that no longer will I be in stuck in a conversation with my autism as an albatross around my neck every time I open my mouth; I am now able to bury the hatchet with language. It's books like these that give you a leg up where genetics let you down. I highly recommend this book.

I really would LOVE to recommend this book for all of people who are learning English as a second language and hope to know English idioms. I am from Ukraine, but now I am staying in LA to learn English. I was looking for some books that could helps me to understand the meaning of idioms because sometimes it was too difficult for me to figure out what they mean. This book has more than 700 idioms with examples, meanings and origins. The origins help me to remember the idioms easier. After I read some, I finally understand why people use idioms in particular situations and I feel like I will never forget them. It may not really helpful for academic courses or daily conversation, but it is easy to read anytime and it is good for FUN! Unless I am older than twenty, this book is fun enough! And especially, this is cheaper than others. So, I'd like to say just buy and read. I am 99% sure that buying this book is going to be a good choice

I bought this book to help as I tutor a Mexican woman in English. Idioms can be the hardest thing to learn, since they don't always make sense. I wanted to be sure she understands them, even if she doesn't always have to come up with them herself. There are multiple ways to say things and she can get her message across without using idioms, but she will be at a disadvantage if she doesn't recognize them when someone else uses them.I like that the book includes 3 resources for each idiom - a definition, a use in a sentence, plus the derivation. Also, the idioms are listed in alphabetical order, so it is an easy reference. This book should make learning more fun.

My 14 yr old daughter was telling me a story the other day. My reply was, "Yeah, you don't want to throw the baby out with the bath water!" She had no idea what I was talking about. I mentioned a few other idioms, none of which she knew. I then realized I had failed as a parent in this department! I looked up books on idioms and found this book with really good reviews so I bought it. It has been so fun to have around the house and our other children refer to it often. My sister-in-law loved it so much I ordered her one too. Fun book to have just sitting on the coffee table. Highly recommend it.

I have been working with a student who has Asperger's. He has trouble with figurative language, especially idioms. This book has been a big help. There are a number of expressions that are relevant to the present-day culture and are used very often. The common sayings are listed in alphabetical order. For each selection, the idiom is presented in the context of a sentence. The meaning of the idiom is given in plain terms. Then, the origin of the idiom is given to give a historical explanation. My student is enjoying going through the book. We use this as an activity when a five minute change of pace is needed for a transition between reading comprehension activities or writing assignments. We will go through several of the idioms together. I saw a review that said that the expressions are too child-like. I don't find this to be the case at all. The vast majority of the expressions are heard in adult conversation on a regular basis.I have discovered that many children don't often use the same idioms we are familiar with from an earlier generation. They have their own lingo, but it is essential for them to be familiar with the sayings in the book. It enables them to have a broader range of expression and an expanded frame of reference when communicating with adults and gathering meaning of reading passages. My student had a blank look on his face when I would relate some of the idioms in the past. I knew it was an issue I needed to address because he is sure to encounter it as he advances in our school's high school English curriculum. This book would help out ELL students as well. They struggle to grasp idioms that we take for granted, although they communicate with intricate idiomatic expressions in their native languages. The book will also benefit students who need to spice up writing samples. Teachers like to see students paint colorful pictures with their words in descriptive narratives and much prefer it to bland narratives that are often passed in. I think this is a great resource for any educator and I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Review

"This book presents a number of subtle physical (and accompanying philosophical) ideas in a non-technical manner for the non-professional reader. The exposition is often a model of clarity..., presenting very difficult physical and conceptual ideas in a remarkably lucid way."--MathematicalReviews"This book is gold.... Barbour leaves his mark on every topic he considers, including the arrow of time and the origins of the Big Bang. One is left with a remarkable conception of reality and a sense of a personal quest.... Above all we get a sense of what economy of thought can truly be, ofhow shocking and sparse the concepts of physics may turn out to be.... Whether or not Barbour is right in his vision, as pedagogy and as analysis his book is a masterpiece."--The New York Times Book Review"An unusual alternate to the standard way of viewing the four-dimensional universe (three spatial dimensions and time), beginning with how our perception of time is formed."--Publishers Weekly"Barbour's theories may lead to the solution of one of the great paradoxes of modern science: the chasm between classical and quantum physics."--Science News"The End of Time [is] British physicist Julian Barbour's treatise on the idea that time doesn't even exist. It's nothing more, he says, than an illusion, a sort of cosmic parlor trick.... The orderly flow of events may really be as much an illusion as the flickering frames of a movie. Andaccording to independent physicist Barbour's new book, even the apparent sequence of the flickers is illusory."--Time"In this provocative volume, Barbour presents the basic evidence for the nonexistence of time, explaining what a timeless universe is like and showing how the world will nonetheless be experienced as intensely temporal."--The Astronomical Society of the Pacific"Most of the work is concerned with the struggle to resolve the disparities among classical physics, quantum mechanics, and general relativity. Barbour argues that the omission of time from the foundations of physics will enable scientists to achieve a unified theory of physics.... A book thatdeserves serious study and consideration."--Jack W. Weigel, Library Journal"I cannot think of another book that so successfully forces the reader to reconsider his or her most intimate assumptions about reality. But there is much more here than a radical scientific vision. In order to properly explain his destruction of time, Barbour also offers one of the clearestoverview explanations of twentieth century physics available. Whether he is right or wrong, Barbour is on a great intellectual journey, and he is articulate enough to allow us to observe him in flight. Of course, if Barbour is right, the previous sentence would have to be rewritten. Read the bookand learn how."--Jaron Lanier"Julian Barbour is so knowledgable about contemporary physics--especially general relativity theory, quantum theory, and quantum gravity--so learned in the history of physics, so gifted at analytical philosophy and so elegant and amusing in his presentation that anyone who seriously confrontshis argumentation and nevertheless remains a temporalist (as I do) will inevitably emerge a stronger, subtler, and wiser advocate of that philosophy."--Abner Shimnoy, Emeritus Professor of Philosophy and Physics, Boston University"Julian Barbour's new theory of time is the most interesting and provocative new idea about time to be proposed in many years. If true it will change the way we see reality. Experts in the field of quantum gravity have for years looked up to Julian Barbour for his wisdom and imagination, as heis one of the few people who is truly both a scientist and a philosopher. Written with rare clarity and force, this book makes his thinking accessible to all interested readers."--Lee Smolin

Reader beware: This is hardcore theoretical physics, and as deep a thinker I believe myself to be, I clearly lack the education to keep up with a lot of the language and math Barbour uses to make his case. As near as I can figure it, Barbour theorizes that we exist in a 100% STATIC reality where nothing is actually ever in motion. I happen to agree with this theory, and believe that our experience is an ILLUSION of motion created by the rapid focusing and refocusing of individuated Consciousness into one holographic "still frame" after another. In a truly infinite reality, this is completely possible and even PLAUSIBLE. However, for me it's far easier to imagine such a reality using allegory than the physics and math employed within this book by Barbour, a truly brilliant human being. One of few books in my library I was unable to finish, but just having it there makes me feel smarter, lol!

I read this book many years ago, and still it plagues me. Read at your own risk! The ideas are sound and the presentation lucid. And yet, the ideas are so counter to human experience that they take some time to absorb. The author himself says it took him a couple decades just to write the first chapter. Well, I've been ruminating over that first chapter for almost a decade.Although difficult and often counter-intuitive, much of what Barbour proposes is validated by experiment. In the grand tradition of *real* science, this is a book of exploration. Enjoy!

I've read many of the books on this topic. None has been as helpful in providing real insight regarding this totally un-intuitive concept. For example, at one point you started reading this review but now you're reading these particular words. How could that have happened if "time" didn't pass? One simplistic way to describe how Barbour explains it is that what we perceive as "time" is actually change. We get confused because we apply metrics to the perceptions.Obviously that's not totally satisfying to our desire to really understand what's going on, but it does 'move the ball' a little toward that goal. And, the book provides a much richer view of the whole concept, including the history of theories and thoughts about time as well as how matter and motion impact what we experience. This is well worth the read for anyone obsessed with trying to comprehend reality.

In my opinion, this is one of the most misunderstood books on Amazon. A lot of the reviewer expect the same pseudo-scientific, philosophizing, feel good, new age mumbo jumbo so prevalent and highly rated. They are rightly disappointed, since this was not the aim of this book.In fact what Barbour tries here is to make a case for finding the basic principles underlying one of the most successful modern physical theory: the general relativity. In fact he manages to establish this connection making "The End of Time" one the most meaty popular science books of all times. It is true that Barbour does don't convincingly explains the psychological illusion of time in a timeless universe, but it would be foolish to expect that, since the problem of qualia is still an elusive, poorly understood interdisciplinary concept. Still, this shortcoming does not make the book any less intriguing. The only irritating aspect of the book was the narcissistic attitude of the author. He has not decided whether he writes a popular science book or an biography of himself (I don't use the word autobiography, as he praises himself as if he would be a different person.)Still I give this book 5 stars, since it is extremely well written and Barbour makes an excellent job to make a very hard technical topic intuitive and accessible. The only reason he seems to fail is simply the very modest average intellectual capability of the general audience. For example, a lot of the layman reviewers attack the notion of timelessness, which is in fact does not originate from Barbour but is a most mainstream view among all self-respecting physicists. The notion that the arrow of time is a consequence of the entropy increase in the state-space is neither new, nor very controversial. What's a new however is that the topology of Einstein's space-time manifold is naturally glued together from disjoint three dimensional moments based on a similarity metric alone is not widely recognized.I think this is a very fundamental and interesting insight, which deserves a good deal of thoughts. This conclusion of his, however is not a subjective opinion, but a well defined mathematical statement proven by Barbour and his coauthors.

It comes brand new so that when you open the cover, it bends and makes that new book sound. It seems like a great book full of pictures and has way more current information than Dare to Dream, etc. Thats only because it came out recently and tells you all NEW stuff about the boys! It has a hard cover which is always better....and is very long! So not the best idea to get little children unless you are planning to read it to them! Great for teens! And if your sick of those lame 50 page books about them this is your best deal so far!

This is literally a 'big' book. I was expecting a soft cover, typical tween read, but was pleasently surprised when this book arrived in my mailbox. I purchased it for a young girl for her 13th birthday. She's a pretty big fan of One Direction and I always love finding creative ways to inspire kids to read. She gets to learn about her favorite band members- and she gets to read! Win win!I, personally, did not sift through the book. It came in pristine condition. The hardcover had that new book 'crack' as it first opened. So I didn't want to mess with it too much before she opened it for her birthday. It is hardcover. And a quality hardcover. The pages are glossy with high resolution pictures and clear print. The quality of the book is worth well over it's asking price. The cover is glossy and has embossed writing (textured writing). There is a really fine shine to the front of the book. The pages are thick and high quality paper. Each page is packed with information and pictures- creatively laid out in a way that any tween girl would appreciate. It's very age appropriate for girls ranging from 10 to 15. I think the reading level is a bit sophisticated for elementary kids- but even so they would probably really enjoy the pictures. The size of the book is fairly big. It's thick! Full of pages. But the actual size of the book is large too! I'd say it's about 10 inches wide- which is pretty big for a book. It's sized similar to a typical library encyclopedia (but not quite as thick). All in all, I was very pleased with this book. And the girl who recieved it absolutely loves it!

love it with all my heart omg its so perfect it has 192 pages and so many pictures and its recent because it has pictures of zayn with his blonde streak! AHHH!!! its so perf i love it and it came earlier than expected by about 3 days!

My 9 yr old was ecstatic to receive this at Christmas. She has poured over the pages, reading about each one. She brought it to a family gathering and her older cousins enjoyed looking at it and discussing it. It is a very thick book and excellent quality. With the time my daughter has spent actually READING it, I think it is definitely worth the money spent.

Got this for my daughter as her christmas present. Initially the delivery was sometime in Jan 2013. Was surprised to get a mail saying it will be delivered in Dec. it came 2 days after Christmas but much early then projected so thnx Amazon. Book is hard cover and very good print quality. My daughter loves it

Sorry. I thought I wrote a review, This is exactly as described, delivered before it's time (Tysm!). My daughter loves it!!

Great book filled with tons of fun facts about the boys of One Direction. Everything you wanted to know are in these pages. She loves it! Of course, all we hear now is, "Mom/Dad, did you know...?"

My daughter loves this group and their music, she finds it full of picture from the ones she likes and for me seems a very complete guide for those who are fans to I Direction.Recommended a 100% percent if you are a fan.

Ive been a Stephen King fan for 40 years. The Stand is and will remain my favorite of his books. I like all of them but I love a select few and The Stand is at the top of the list. If you are already a King fan and you haven't read The Stand, you'll love this book. The overall theme is Biblically related and he sticks close to details in well known Biblical stories. But, don't get me wrong, this is not "Christian Fiction". This is the best of Sci-Fi/Horror you'll find in King's books. The characters are fully developed and totally interesting. The dystopian story is compelling and believable. If you are a fan, since this is one of his earlier works, you'll see familiar types of characters, ie..Randy Flagg and Tom Collin. If you're a new King reader, you will get to know the characters and you'll care about them. This isn't a read in one sitting book. Rather, it is a day after day reading that you'll enjoy and hate to put down. Though some may say King is extremely verbose, I think his detailed telling of the story connects the reader to the characters like very few authors are able to do. This is my sixth reading of the book and the first time I listened to the audio book. It was just as good this time as the last. With a hour long ride to work and back, my time in the car seemed shorter because of the quality of the reader and the quality of the story.I won't give away anything, I'll only say take your time and enjoy the ride with King's epic. I loved every word.

I have a long commute to/from the office, so I wanted something nice and long to focus my attention on while riding the bus. The Stand is a classic that has stood the test of time. The audiobook is well read/acted without going over the top.I read the edited version when it first came out, and devoured the unabridged version when it was released a few years later. However, it wasn't until I was listening to the book that I realized why it is so engaging and captures the imagination. Not only is it one of King's most well-written works, it is also one of his most poetic. His ability to describe the most disgusting situations is unquestioned in any King book. However, in The Stand, he is able to describe elements of emotion in such a way that one is enraptured and engaged on a completely different level than you'd expect. I think this book stands (pun not intended) as King's finest work. Even if you've read the book, do yourself the favor of 'listening' to it as well. You won't regret it.

The Stand was epic in its original form, and this edition, with expanded story lines and restored cuts lives up to the original. All of Stephen King's books are excellent, but this one is a parable for modern times of the age-old battle between good and evil. Read it again if you have read it before. And if you have never read it, be assured: this is a book you will never forget! I found myself cheering as favorite characters came into the story, and even though I knew the ending, I read faithfully onward through days and nights to the very end. I am not sure how many times I have read this book now--a dozen times? More? Yet, I know I will read it again in the future. It is not "The Good Book" but it is A Good Book, and a very good book, indeed! A+ +

While repairing my mother's Kindle, I noticed that she had a copy of The Stand installed, and after the repair was done, I felt kind of a duty to test the repair by reading a bit of her copy. My experience was that I wound up buying a copy for my own Kindle, and then spent an entirely inappropriate amount of my waking hours reading it.It's totally engrossing, and very interesting in enough different ways that you just don't get tired of working your way through all those damn pages. A great premise, great plot development, interesting and believable characters, and a scope that constantly reminds how transient we all are. Great stuff that got ME so involved that when I went to hospital for a relatively normal visit, I was ACUTELY aware of everyone who coughed or sneezed, and though I snickered at myself almost immediately for my temporary transportation from reality to plot, the snicker wasn't quite as immediately convincing as it might have been. So, yeah, it was THAT engrossing.

This story is incredible. Five stars over and over again. The reason for this bad review is the defective binding. I bought this book a few months ago and just started reading it last month. Ever since I opened the book, the pages have been falling and peeling out. I’ve been trying to tape the pages back in, but more and more fall out when I read. I spoke with a customer service agent who didn’t once apologize for the defective product, but rather asked if I was aware of the return date. When I said I wasn’t trying to return, but would merely like a replacement book, after making me wait, she said she would make an exception and send me a replacement. I’m grateful to be getting a replacement, but this isn’t the service I’m used to getting from Amazon. Amazon really needs to take a hard look at the suppliers for this book. Obviously there is some sort of quality control issue here.

Its a long ride but well worth it. Clocking in at some 1,200 pages this book can be very intimidating. Stephen King paints a picture of a plague infested world and the events that conspire after the survivors are left. In it you get to know a couple handfuls of people, their lives, their passions, how they survived Captain Trips and how they grow and change throughout the book. There are times when Stephen Kings backstory for every character can be a bit drawn out, but I find in the end you're glad you knew those things about that character. You truly get to know the people in this book you appreciate that looking back some 500 pages ago. Look at where they are now. Look how they've change. Its one of the best books I've read in terms of character development. The story is just as good as well, hooking you in with a vision of what would happen if a super virus hit, the fallout from said super virus, how savage people can become, how we try to rebuild and how theres a dark wizard lurking about in people dreams, gathering people together, building an army, planning a war.

Mr. Dewees has created an approachable and enlightening book for the newcomer to the topic and a go-to for the professional. I can see this book being at home on the professional designers desk, in the work truck, and on the coffee table! I will never look at palms the same way and now that I have this remarkable reference, I look forward to exploring my surroundings with new eyes. The real passion with which Mr. Dewees approaches the subject and encyclopedic knowledge he has make reading this book akin to the listening to one of the best tour guides one could meet. The marriage of the inspired writing with Caitlin Atkinson's wondrous photography are a game changer. Couldn't recommend more highly, nothing like it, a must have!

This book focuses not so much on all of the palm species that one could collect, but how to use palms in the landscape. This is the only palm book I own that has that perspective, and one that fills a gap for palm lovers. For anyone that wants to add palms to garden, Jason's book will help you choose the right palm for the spot whether you need a diminutive Chamaedorea for a intimate, shady, sheltered site, or huge Jubaea or Canary Island Date palm to fill a grand landscape. It can also keep you from planting the Canary Island Date where you really need a Pygmy Date! Another truly enjoyable aspect of this book is the way Jason describes the beautiful gardens he visited in writing this book. Its a wonderful read whether you already love palms, gardening, landscaping or just the outdoors.

Palm trees suffer from several stereotypes: Palms can only be used in the tropics or as houseplants; Palms can only be employed as massive elements of garden design; Palms are primarily desert or oasis habituates. Jason Dewees, in his well-crafted and edited tome, Designing With Palms, lays these tired old tropes to rest. Dewees explains how palms can be integrated into a variety of landscapes, whether as impressive groves, luscious undergrowths in pine and other warm temperate climates, and as stunning players in concert with other subtropical and tropical plants. The beginning of the book gives a brief overview of the history, culture, climate, structure, and anatomy of palm tress. If you have never contemplated the elements of a palm tree, outside of fronds and fruit, this is an excellent primer. There is a section on water, planting, feeding, etc. There are 2 info boxes, Vigor and Weakness and Hardy Hybrid Palms, that could have been expanded. The use of palms as stunted landscape plants is underappreciated and the benefit of hybrid palms in colder latitudes deserve more detail. These two palm elements really open possibilities for gardeners that may have shied away from palms in the past.Palm Sensations and Services details the ways palms can be used in garden design and to what long term effect. Exquisite American Gardens is a survey of gardens from Hawaiʻi to the Carolinas, California to Florida, showing the variety and options available to curious and adventurous gardeners. The final section, A Portfolio of Palm Species, is exactly that: a listing of palms that will grow outside in the appropriate warm temperate, subtropical and tropical areas in the United States. Growth habit, water use and substitutions, along with climate and drought tolerance, are listed for each entry. This is an excellent book for the beginning palm or subtropical/tropical gardener. While there is very little information on propagation or acclimatization, the extensive bibliography and resource listing can more than fill in the gaps. I would caution that this is a book for those who wish to garden with palms outdoors. If you are searching for information on growing palms inside or in a greenhouse, you would be best advised to look elsewhere. Dewees has expertly filled in a missing area of garden literature by capturing the beauty and utility of palms in a book for the average gardener.

The photographs of palms in gardens in this book are compelling, but they are just the start. Once I began reading, the way I thought about palm trees was transformed from a two dimensional postcard idea about palms to a three dimensional kind of understanding -- with concepts like canopy-scape, palms as hedges, groundcover, palms as adding vertical height... I feel I have a much deeper appreciation for the way palms can transform tight spaces close to structures, without damaging foundations, due to their distinct anatomy compared to other trees. Loaded with inspiration, and with detailed names of different palms and their unique requirements, this book is eminently practical. I must warn readers, you may find yourself radically changing your landscape!

Designing with Palms is a wonderful resource for any professional designer or gardener. This book has expert information for the practical applications of palm trees in a variety of settings. The combined knowledge and stunning beauty of this book make it a must have for any plant enthusiast.

I expected to like this book, but it totally exceeded expectations. It's not just a beautiful photo book (which it is) but has thoughtful, sincerely-interesting essays that touch on a variety of disciplines. Whether you are looking at designing a garden, learning more about the history or perhaps the science of these beautiful plants, you won't be disappointed.

The first part consist of beautifully inspiring photos of plantings with useful comments. The second part is an excellent reference on individual palm species.

I love this book! I am a landscape designer in Houston Texas and we are sub-tropical zone 9. This book really helps inspire me when working on a tropical style design. Great addition to my plant and design library! #iamapld

After watching the 2015 Everest film I became a sponge for all things about the 1996 Everest tragedy watching 4 documentaries, reading Jon Krakauer and Lou Kasischke's books. Just finished The Climb (TC) a few hours ago and loved it.For those who do not know this book discuses the 1996 tragedy on Everest that befell two climbing teams. Krakauer's book (into thin air [ITA]) is usually regarded by the public as the main source of what happened on the mountain. In that book Krakauer was critical to Anatoli who then released this book to defend himself and his actions (by not using supplemental oxygen and for descending the mountain rapidly before the team). I felt bad that Anatoli got a bad wrap for 1996 when he risked his own life several times to save other climbers. This is a great read for any Everest junkies and is really the only main book that shows what happened on the Mountain Madness team (Krakauer and Lou's books are from the other teams POV). The book offers some really good insight into Scott Fischer and the other MM climbers. IMHO it also clearly explain why Anatoli did not use supplemental oxygen as well as why he did a rapid descent. The first 60% of the book covers 1996. The next chapter details his next expedition back up Everest and how he made make-shift graves for Scott and Yasuko Namba as well as took their small effects to give back to their families. Classy move imho. The last 30% of the book is a group transcript of the MM group discussing the tragedy shortly after it happened and is a great read.I am not going to get into who is right or wrong and will let you decide for yourself. All I will say is that this is a great read and if you read Krakauer's book you are only getting 1 side of the story. imo all three books should be read as they are all great reads but also from three distinct POVs.Notes:Worth The Money: Yes! (easily)Would I Recommend It: Yes!

First I read Krakauer's book and I wanted to have a good opinion from a guide's point of view. At first the book was a breath of fresh air. No drama, everything from the expedition explained professionally. But after the first half of the book the whole point of it became to explain over and over the same facts already stated. As if Boukreev needed some reassurance. Dude, you were the professional there, you did whatever you thought best and that was that. Accidents happen, and whoever has been on a mountain knows mountain weather can change quickly, so don't beat yourself up, you don't need to explain. The book could have easily been cut shorter and made an awesome book, but after the first half it becomes so repetitive it's painful to read. Could have been 5 stats.

The story of the man who risked everything to save lost climbersMay 10, 1996, was the day eight climbers died on Mount Everest. Four climbers from Rob Hall’s Adventure Consultants Expedition, including Rob; Scott Fisher, leader of the Mountain Madness Expedition; and three climbers from an Indo-Tibetan Border Police Expedition that were scaling Everest from the opposite side died of falls or exposure. A member of the Taiwanese Expedition had died the day before from a fall. Against all odds and left to for dead, Beck Weathers stumbled into camp under his own steam. As Anatoli states, he is writing this book as a rebuttal to a perceived disparaging account of his actions in Jon Krakauer's book Into Thin Air. Anatoli explains his decision to climb without supplementary oxygen, the reasoning behind his decision to leave Yasuko Namba for dead and why since Beck did survive Anatoli had not brought him into camp. While some have hailed Anatoli as a near superhuman hero and others as a man devoted only to his own clients, I do not get that sort of feeling from his words. Anatoli felt that anyone would have done what he did if he or she were able. He mourned over Yasuko, gathered her personal item for her family, and even buried her where she fell. He has said he did not know where Beck was, as Beck had become separated from the others. His words have the ring of truth. Only those on the mountain that day could pass judgment on any decision made by anyone else who went through the same disastrous day. Each saw things from his or her perspective. Anatoli may not have thought himself a hero, but those that he aided can and have said differently!I give the book four stars…Quoth the Raven…

Truly great read. The author interviewed Mr. Boukreev extensively and even had long sections of Anatolys own words. I liked the style, he never put words in his mouth. He clearly credited Anatoly when he "spoke". The book gives a great view of the 1996 Everest tragedy from anther viewpoint (Not John Krakaur's) and clearly gives Anatoly a chance to point out what he felt had happened.I read it while wind bound at 5500 Meters while climbing Aconcagua. My partner read it also along with one of the Italians. Everyone really enjoyed it. It's a treasured possession..

The first half of this book is really good. It gives behind-the-scenes insight into the organization of the 1996 Mountain Madness Everest expedition, and all the preparation and stress that goes into planning such a huge undertaking. It provides additional perspective and insight into the disastrous (and still shocking, all these years later) events of May 10th, 1996. And it acts as a tribute to both the larger-than-life Scott Fischer and the talented climber Anatoli Boukreev, showing their humanity and vulnerability as well as their strengths. I highly recommend the first half of the book. The second half of the book is, in large part, a diatribe against Jon Krakauer's account of the same disaster in Into Thin Air. Although it's interesting in terms of understanding the disagreement (feud) between Krakauer and Boukreev, I didn't enjoy it. No matter whose account you believe, DeWalt comes across as petty and biased, hence the 3 star rating. Skip the second half.
