Packed with useful info for collectors of die cast metal toys from the UK. Especially valuable because it encompasses several brands of these toys. with exhaustive lists of these toys and their value. Although this book was the latest edition I could find, it is still several years old. I'm watching for a newer version.

This a well written, readable concise history of the Big Island. It provides meaning to many of the place names that can be unpronounceable strings of syllables for haole readers. The first half is a chronological history from first arrivals through the overthrow of the monarchy. The second half traces social and economic issues by topic from their time of origin through the beginning of the 21st century. I’ve read it three times now....

I have read a lot of books on the history of Hawaii but none that focused exclusively on the Big Island. I enjoyed reading about the evolution of the island people and eventually the economy. It was written in plain everyday English which made it more enjoyable to read than a lot of the historical books I've read.

I travel quite often to the Big Island and was interested in learning more about its history, so I purchased this book. Unfortunately, I do not think that I learned a ything new. Casual tourist would absorb the sa e information without reading this dull rehash

I'm a writer, I write about Hawai'i. This is an excellent, unbiased history of the Big Island and one of my favorite references. I like it so well I bought a hard copy. It isn't exactly a quick read, but it's accurate, thorough, detailed, and all the other stuff a non-fiction history should be.

I read this book before going on a vacation to Hawaii. I was so happy to know all the history as I toured around the Big Island. It really makes me appreciate the people who came to Hawaii, all they went through, their hardships and their triumphs. There are sad parts and there are funny parts. I found it very interesting. I highly recommend this book before you go to Hawaii! You'll be glad you read it.

This is a well written history. While it covers no new material, it is an excellent guide for a visitor or local who would like to know more about the past of this fascinating place.

Concise overview of the history of the Big Island. Was exciting to read this while vacationing on Kealakelua Bay, where so much of the early history is centered.

quick read that covers most of the basics of Big island hawaiian history. Perfect for a plane rid and a beach day or two on the way to the big Island.

About the Author

John Biehler has been writing online about technology since 1999. An avid photographer and generally curious geek, he discovered 3D printing a number of years ago and built his first 3D printer shortly thereafter. Since then, he has been actively sharing his knowledge about the technology with thousands of people at various events and conferences in Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest, on television and radio, as well as online through his website. He cofounded a Vancouver-area group of 3D printer builders and enthusiasts that has grown exponentially since it started and as the technology heads toward the mainstream.   Bill Fane was a product engineer and then product engineering manager for Weiser Lock in Vancouver, British Columbia, for 27 years and holds 12 U.S. patents. He has been using AutoCAD for design work since Version 2.17g (1986) and Inventor since version 1.0 beta (1996). He is a retired Professional Engineer and an Autodesk Authorized Training Centre (ATC) certified instructor. He began teaching mechanical design in 1996 at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) in Vancouver, including such courses as AutoCAD, Mechanical Desktop, Inventor, SolidWorks, machine design, term projects, manufacturing processes, and design procedures. He retired from this position in 2008. He has lectured on a wide range of AutoCAD and Inventor subjects at Autodesk University since 1995 and at Destination Desktop since 2003. He was the AUGI CAD Camp National Team instructor for the manufacturing track. He has written more than 220 “The Learning Curve” AutoCAD tutorial columns for CADalyst magazine since 1986. He is the current author of the book AutoCAD for Dummies. He also writes software product reviews for CADalyst, Design Product News, and Machine Design. Vary basic book with low content/value. Multiple pages wasted to show layered printing - and the author jokes to rip them out and make a flipbook.Shows lack of knowledge in some areas. e.g. p 218 when describing STL file options..."...d. Allow to Move Internal Mesh Nodes - I'm not exactly sure what this does or how it works, but the Inventor Help facility simply states that it can be useful when modeling spiral curves."

Good Book if you are getting into 3D Printing using Autodesk software

Just as expected.

Taught me nothing I didnt already know. A waste of timecand money. Just watch how to video on you tube.

Nice book of information. The program itself is non-explanatory, so having this book really helped with my learning to use it. I would recommend this book for anyone just starting out with Autodesk 123D to make 3D drawings for printing on a 3D printer or just making prints to hang on the wall.

Very basic information. Discusses both IPAD and PC versions of applications resulting in repeating of similar material at starting level. At one point there were multiple pages of diagrams showing how 3D printing is done layer by layer. Two diagrams would have been enough, I am not that stupid.

If you plan to study 3D drawing for from basic to advance this in not the book. No hands on tutorials; no objects to create.Good as a general guide of what to look for in 3D Printing using Autodesk.

#11,082 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This is the book that all of us in the Pacific Northwest have been waiting for. These authors have obviously spent countless hours researching and photographing the birds of our area, and have compiled their vast knowledge for the rest of us. I really appreciate the information not just on bird identification (which is very well done), but on behaviors, voices, habitats, status, and also where to find them. There is also good info to help us on the trickier bird IDs. The photography is phenomenal--Shewey and Blount have captured not just the look, but the personality and lifestyle of the birds in their pictures. This book is a must for all pacific northwesterners!

Simply the finest birding book for the region I have seen and now own.The book has so many things done right that I have virtually set aside every other book I have previously relied on for birding in the backyard and back country alike.Layout- Easy to use, easy to quickly search and reference. Easy. Period.Photos- High quality, great shots and real shots that help me reference what I am really seeing in the field. With multiple aspects of most birds in a range of plumages when appropriate.Descriptions- A perfect blend of technical data and language that is appropriate to the lay-person and expert alike. I purchased this book for multiple family members and some of the more beginner birders find the best aspect to be-- 'they understand it'.I would consider myself to be a Novice birder but spend more than an average amount of time in the outdoors observing. This is a great reference tool, and incredibly reasonable in price for all it provides. It may not replace your entire birding library as it did mine, but I assure you it deserves a place in it.

UPDATE 8/26/2018:I've referred to this thing endlessly this year. I will be watching this one for future revision/additions if they ever come. This is the bird guide for PNW, hands-down. My 5 stars stand.ORIGINAL REVIEW:I've only just gotten into this guide and already I am simply impressed. The photography is outstanding and without being overly contrast-laden, heavily edited as several other guides tend toward (I believe editors believe this adds clarity to the markings and colors, but really it only muddies the waters since no bird appears this way naturally). The descriptions, ranges and behavioral notes are excellent, marvelous really for a book of this size. The organization is well done and the cover and binding are strong. Not much more to ask for. My previous favorite for our region is "Birds of the Puget Sound Region Coast to Cacades" Paulson, Morse, Aversa and Opperman ... but I have to admit, except for the physical size of this book, its a bit better in most ways. It's naturally larger as is covers a much larger region, but even still I'm happy to have picked it up. A new favorite.

The handiness of this guide for birders in the Pacific Northwest (PNW) from Vancouver, BC to Boise, ID is undisputed. It photographs the majority of species beautifully, often including images of birds in flight, color morphs, appropriate subspecies, and sexual dimorphism. Some photos are not 100% perfect, like the dark image of the Black-billed Magpie, with no hint of its green and blue iridescence. However, these flaws are rare, and difficult to control with moving subjects like birds. The introduction of the book provides a descent overview of tools for birding, identification tips, confusing regional lookalike species, and of course, highlights some birding hotspots in the PNW.Each of the nearly 400 species (300 breeding) are given at least a page, including photos, description, species' dimensions (size), voice, behaviors, habitat, status, and distribution map. Maps are a bit too small, despite having page space available. However, they are detailed when it comes to temporal changes (season movements) to species' ranges. This book at 559-pages long is perhaps unnecessarily bulky, considering it's dedicated to one region within the world's smallest (by species) avifaunal region, the Neararctic. Unallocated white space is commonplace on pages and it lacks the intense detail in distribution maps I would like to see from a regional guide. Whist the seasonality in the maps is appreciated, species' status (where common or uncommon) should be included when dealing with a small region, as one might find in a birding atlas.Notwithstanding, this is a great regional guide. If a little more attention was given to species' accounts spatial allocations, map sizing and distribution detail therein, then a subsequent edition may be rendered utterly unparalleled.

I have used bird field guides for years. This is by far the best I’ve ever seen. The photographs are wonderful. The information is well done and put together well. I’m really impressed. I bought one for myself, one for my daughter, and plan to get another one for a friend. I love this field guide. Thank you Mr. Shewey, Mr. Blount and the photographer.

This is a beautiful book with great pictures and well organized. I find it easy to look up unknown birds. After comparing books and looking around for quite a while I found the price on this one to be more than reasonable. It’s well bound and easy to use. I like that it gives an overview of the geographic area where each bird predominately resides. I also like that the descriptions are for both juvenile as well as male and female of each species.

Thick, sturdy paperback I bought for my little unschoolers. They drag it around everywhere and have identified several birds.

We bought a new home and the yard is bird heaven. We can sit at any of our back windows and watch birds in the baths, in the trees, and digging for worms. It's been really interesting trying to decide what the birds are and this book has been incredibly useful and educational.

The Left is very slowly and methodically pushing this agenda to the fullest in my country. Every incoming college student should take time to read this work; because it won't be on any formal required reading list. This is the Left's agenda; make no mistake about it. The agenda might initially sound attractive. This is the danger. It is an agenda from those who believe they know what's best for us all. And in this arrogant approach takes away our individual liberty to believe and act as we, speaking only for myself, see fit by our own unique world view. In my case, my eternal view.

This a very brief essay on the topic of socialism that explains why, in the author's perspective, that ideology is so perverse. In this vein the moral issue absorbs the greatest portion of the book. To do this, Haskins, elaborate some moral cases that illustrate his point. For some readers that will appear like a caricature, and it maybe that way. To me, in fact, that's the problem with the exposition of cases that have been, like here, "elaborated" with that purpose only. Now, the important point is clear: socialism, even halfway, which means not completely developed, can harm as much as could do if it were. In other words, there's no option. The middle ground is so evil and harmful as the total one. I'm a little pesimistic so I guess in the end it will prevail. Bad ideas do not depend on the outcome, especially if they have been built upon hopes like a better world, whatever that means. By the way, Haskins doesn't give us hope at all. But it deserves to pay attention on what he has to say. Even if at last we loose our freedom. Or the most precious part of it.

Too often books that criticize socialism is simply critical against big government but this book is different. This book challenges Marx's idea of socialism along with modern European style socialism. The author quotes Marx's works to make sure he is not attacking a caricature of socialism but rather what Marx truly believed was socialist. This book does a fantastic job in challenging the morality of Marxism as a whole not just big government which would have been a let down if it was just that.

Loved its brevity yet lots of information and a different approach to denounce Socialism. Not bad because it does not work, but that it is immoral.

This book is a well reasoned and interesting treatise on what's wrong with socialism. It is relatively short and well-written, and highly recommended.

As a writer and publisher, I especially appreciate this description of socialism/communism because it’s thoughts are presented clearly, are easily absorbed, and just as effectively understood. It mirrors my own long standing historical research and conclusions about the severe, disastrous, evils of socialism/communism.Forty four years in our business management, marketing, and advertising arena have given me deep, abiding faith that America’s foundational freedoms provide the most effective way to individual prosperity, achievement, security, and contentment ever devised in this world. This is yet another must read for those fellow Americans who know how vital it now is to counter the press toward this evil, murderous, system of government by socialist/communist politicians in present day America.

Worth reading. This book details all that is evil and just plain wrong about socialism. It's well written and very well researched. Highly recommended.

Every fact given can be easily verified through existing news and literary archives. I was born in 1934 and lived through all of the history referenced in this book and vividly remember all the facts and events given in this well thought-out book. People, you had better believe this.

Review

“Humans walk upright, possess giant brains, have nearly hairless skin, and live exceptionally long lives. How did we come to be such peculiar primates? Sang-Hee Lee tackles this question with aplomb. Deftly weaving together science and personal observation, Lee proves an engaging, authoritative guide on this nickel tour of the human condition.” - Kate Wong, Scientific American“Succinctly and engagingly, Lee revisits key questions about the story of our evolving species―and gives some unconventional answers.” - Nature“Lee, a paleoanthropologist, tells us much about our evolutionary origins by sorting through our ancestors’ mortal remains.” - New York Times, New & Noteworthy“An exceptionally reader-friendly introduction to human evolution… Highly accessible, consistently interesting popular science writing.” - Kirkus (starrred review)“I have struggled for years to find reading materials that cover the basics of human evolution without overwhelming students with dry, technical minutiae. At last, a book that does this! This book will appeal not only to students, but to anyone who is curious about the world.” - Dean Falk, coauthor of Geeks, Genes, and the Evolution of Asperger Syndrome“Lee uses quick-take chapters and a congenial tone to give us an overview of what paleoanthropology has discovered and how it works... Think of it as visiting some really old friends. ” - Library Journal“Close Encounters with Humankind is a terrific introduction to the story of human evolution for someone who is just beginning to explore the field, but even those familiar with the material will find a lot of new information here. I congratulate Sang-Hee Lee for writing an appealing, factual, and entertaining book on the ever-fascinating topic of human evolutionary history.” - Wenda Trevathan, author of Ancient Bodies, Modern Lives: How Evolution Shaped Women’s Health“Close Encounters with Humankind is a delightful book full of memorable stories that reveal deep truths and penetrating mysteries about our past. What a fun way to explore the origins of our strange human ways.” - Nathan H. Lents, The Human Evolution Blog and Professor, John Jay College“Sang-Hee Lee has posed some of the big questions in human evolution and has written brief, clear, and jargon-free essays about them. Her informal, clear style and commonsense explanations are delightful and engaging. Brava!” - Pat Shipman, Professor of Anthropology and author of The Invaders“In this insightful collection, Sang-Hee Lee shows herself to be a gifted storyteller, breathing new life into the old bones, with both the intimate knowledge of a practitioner and a dose of cross-cultural scientific sensitivity. A pleasure to read!” - Jonathan Marks, Professor of Anthropology and author of Tales of the Ex-Apes

I got this book because I am interested in how we became who we are today. The author uses a series of entertaining and well-presented chapters to answer this question. In a series of bite-sized, entertaining pieces that likely are taken from her class lectures, Dr. Lee artfully uses anecdotes to present man-kind's history. It is easy to connect these lessons with who we are today. The ease of reading is such that one might do the whole, little book in one reading. Or, take a bite every evening before bed. In the end you'll better understand yourself and others, even those on other continents and beliefs. This is a book for all ages . Teen-aged children will find it as interesting as adults.Gert this book. You will not be disappointed, quite the opposite!!

Really interesting perspective on humans and human evolution told in a very down to earth and easily understandable way.

Excellent

A well written, interesting collection of essays. Explanations of various aspects of human evolution that are usually not covered very much in a more traditional approach to the topic. Highly recommended.

Clearly and engagingly written account of research and findings on the origins of humans

well done and attractive

I think my first caution about this book is that the chapters are very episodic. I.e., they just seem to cover random topics as they occur to the authors. Now, some of these are very good. At the same time, some of them just seem a little off.In fact, some of them - and some of the writing - seem to be just special interests of the authors. Not the kind of stuff that would go into what seemed like a very general survey. In addition, she seems to always want to center things around herself. Now, this is usually fine - it can add a little interest to dry material. This time, though, it seemed a little overdone. The tie-ins also seemed a little forced. Finally, I found the writing rather flat. Now, the authors do do a good job of writing for a lay readership. The style was just a little repetitious, drawn out, and rather blah.Sorry If I'm a little critical. The book's not bad at all. It definitely doesn't deserve all 4's.

What is human? This is probably the most fundamental question we humankind want to answer. We have been asking this question for thousand years through many different approaches. Philosophers wanted to answer this question. Scientists wanted to answer this question. Poets and novelists also wanted to answer this question. We have made many theories and hypothesis, We probably know more than our ancestors did, as we have gathered a significant body of knowledge about ourselves. But, the efforts to know about ourselves are still ongoing. This book reveals that the heart of anthropology is nothing but pursuing the quest to answer the key question. And, the author did an awesome job at igniting a spark in readers' mind. If you haven't thought about this fundamental question for a while, take this book and read through. You will realize soon that you are taking an joyful journey to ask the question again. The author does not simply go through the history of human evolution. Her journey starts from us, the modern humankind, Homo Sapiens. Why are human fathers different from males of other animals? Why does human live so long to have grandchildren? Why do we have different skin colors? Then, she brings on various anthropological archeological data. She also goes over how our view of humankind has overcome the Eurocentric view in the colonial era through scientific research, which I enjoyed particularly. Her storytelling is like having a chat with friends over lunch. It is casual and fun and so easy to digest. Every chapter is sprinkled with fun facts and thought-provoking questions. Still, she never loses scholastic rigor. She makes you think and re-examine scientific evidence with her. Sometimes, you will get a new insight. Sometimes, you will question a belief you have kept for a long time. At the end of this journey, you will think of yourself in a different way. Hats off to the author!

Planting the Trees of Kenya: The Story of Wangari Maathai (Frances Foster Books), by Claire A. Nivola

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Kenyan activist Wangari Maathai was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for her environmental and human rights achievements. Founder of the Green Belt Movement, she has encouraged people to repair their economy, land, and health with simple, environmentally friendly acts, such as planting more trees. This beautiful picture-book biography echoes the potent simplicity of Maathai’s message with direct, spare prose and bright, delicate watercolors. Tracking forward from Maathai’s childhood in the rich landscape of Kenya’s highlands, the words and pictures clearly show how the activist’s deep connection with nature as a youth inspired her to develop sustainable practices as an adult. Nivola writes about potentially complex, abstract relationships, such as those between ecological preservation and human health, with clear language that shows connections that children will easily grasp. The story of how each human and tree can make a difference will inspire young people, who will want to linger over the wide, double-page landscapes picturing people restoring stripped land to green, thriving communities and forests. An author’s note offers more about Maathai’s inspiring story. Point teachers and parents seeking more information to Maathai’s autobiography, Unbowed (2006), which was named a Booklist Adult Editor’s Choice. Grades K-3. --Gillian Engberg

Planting the trees of Kenya is a keeper for all teachers k-12. every year we can remind our studnets of their value in this world by reading this book. science teachers could really take off in this book getting students to realize not only their part in a "global" world but what they can imagine for their small part of it. reading, social studies, world studies, economics classes could utilize this book all the way through high school. resources are listed. young girls and young women can see that there are unlimited callings and that they can make a difference, but this book is not just for girls it is a story that can inspire both young men and women. when i read this to my 7th graders one student asked, "How she do that?" good start for an essay or reseach paper, don't you think?????acottwest virginia

Beautiful book that highlighted how quickly we can alter our landscape and the conditions under which it can occur.

LOVED this book. It brought tears to my eyes. I know the real story and this children's book captures the full essence in a perfect way for children and adults alike to learn from it.

great

This is one of the most wonderful picture books this year. It reminds us that we are all capable of recognizing problems and making significant positive changes by taking individual action, and it tells the story of an incredible, real life African role model. The artwork is detailed and captivating.I've given this book as a gift to three children so far this year and plan to keep gifting it!

Beautiful illustrations and important story

This is a charming story about a fabulous woman. I was thrilled when I went to Kenya and was able to plant a tree.

In teaching my children to be good citizens of the earth I seek books to help me instill these values. This is a book I will treasure always, and I know my children will too. It is an amazing story of a woman who has an idea and the belief that she can change her small part of the world after many years have changed the village she once knew. Not only is this a great book from that perspective, but it encourages the principles of environmental stewardship. Plant a tree! We can change the world!
