About the Author

Danica G. Hays, PhD, LPC, NCC, is an associate professor of Counseling and Chair of the Department of Counseling and Human Services at Old Dominion University. She is a recipient of the Outstanding Research Award, Outstanding Counselor Educator Advocacy Award, and Glen E. Hubele National Graduate Student Award from the American Counseling Association as well as the Patricia B. Elmore Excellence in Measurement and Evaluation Award and President’s Special Merit Award from the Association of Assessment in Counseling and Education (AACE).   Dr. Hays served as Founding Editor of Counseling Outcome Research and Evaluation, a national peer-refereed journal of the AACE, and is Editor of Counselor Education and Supervision, a national peer-refereed journal of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. She served as President of the AACE in 2011-12. Her research interests include qualitative methodology, assessment and diagnosis, trauma and gender issues, and multicultural and social justice concerns in counselor preparation and community mental health. She has published over 75 articles and book chapters in these areas and coauthored or coedited these other books to date: Qualitative Inquiry in Clinical and Educational Settings (Guilford Publications), Mastering the National Counselor Exam and the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Exam (Pearson), and the ACA Encyclopedia of Counseling (American Counseling Association). Professor Hays is also co-editor of the upcoming text, A Counselor’s Guide to Career Assessment Instruments (6th edition, National Career Development Association). She has been a faculty member at Old Dominion University since 2006 and her primary teaching responsibilities are doctoral-level research methods courses, assessment, and clinical supervision.    Bradley T Erford, PhD, LCPC, NCC, is a professor in the school counseling program at Loyola University with primary teaching responsibilities in assessment, research, and lifespan development. As I often tell people, the writings of Anne Lamott were introduced to me at a time in my life when I was struggling badly. My oldest son was in the throes of addiction. I was battling depression. And I felt like my whole world was falling apart. I was, in a word, hopeless. But my wife was a big fan of Anne Lamott and suggested I take a look at a few of her books. Figuring I had absolutely nothing to lose, I took my wife up on her suggestion. And it literally changed my life.For someone who was pretty much out of hope, reading Lamott’s thoughtful and spiritual musings was the best thing I could’ve done for myself. It didn’t take long to figure out that Anne’s words were a beacon that could help guide me out of one of the darkest periods of my life.“Hope begins in the dark, the stubborn hope that if you just show up and try to do the right thing, the dawn will come. You wait and watch and work: you don't give up.” That passage from Lamott’s Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life made me stand up and take notice. Maybe there *was* still hope for me. Maybe I *could* navigate the storm I was in the midst of and find some peace in my world. Another passage about hope, this one from Anne’s Plan B: Further Thoughts on Faith, also resonated with me: “Hope is not about proving anything. But having Anne remind us through her wise observations and meaningful stories makes it easier; and it is incredibly comforting, too.I adore everything Anne Lamott writes, because I can relate to her on so many different levels. She thinks so many of the same things I think, which helps make me feel like I’m not alone. And, best of all, she’s a master at pointing out the silver linings--no matter how small--that I may not be able to see.This book will make you realize that there is *always* a reason for hope. “If you arrive at a place in life that is miserable, it will change,” Lamott promises. “Some days there seems to be little reason for hope, in our families, cities, and world. That day I was teaching my one good message, that we are loved and chosen as is, fearfully and wonderfully made, with love and awe, perfect and fragile. We are lovely as sparrows, and all sparrows are sweet. No one thinks, 'That sparrow is kind of a loser, and boy, is that one letting herself go.'I know that all teenagers believe they are intrinsically defective, so that was why I brought up sparrows and friends. I asked the class if any of their best friends had acne, glasses, or problems at home, and if that made them love their friends less. Of course not. I asked them to say, 'I have value,' and both teenagers did so with mortification. The younger boy, not yet destroyed by hormones and society, said it as calmly as if announcing he had ears.I turned to the little girl, expectantly. She said, 'I has value!'I asked her to say it again, 'I has value.'I has value. I want to get that tattooed on my forearm.

Several years ago I read her "One By One" with pleasure. I chose this one primarily because the title attracted me. But I am not enjoying it. She jumps around from abstract theory (her own) to some incident she finds relevant but leaves me not understanding. But often she then adds "that's just my view".I'm halfway through the book and I still am grasping for a point of relevance or reference. I realize that I go to it now as if it is a duty. Not sure I'll finish it.

My first Anne Lamott book was Traveling Mercies, given to me by a dear friend who is now deceased. This friend knew Anne and was a fellow San Franciscan, who thought it would be good for me. It was not only good for me -- it changed my thinking and my heart. Not all at once, but bit by bit, page by page, bird by bird, and by learning the meaning of remaining steadfast without getting nasty, resentful or judgmental. Anne writes with a grace that is one part inherent in her character, and honed by practice, education and life experience. She is one of those rare beings that can be understood and a friend, while never getting to meet her in person. Her writing draws you closer to being in union with your fellow beings; a kind of intimate pen pal. I try to read whatever she produces and I have never been disappointed. My sorrow is that the friend who introduced me to her writing is not here to gift me with this latest book. Purchasing it will be interesting in that it will be sorrowful and yet full of anticipation. I am sure I will not be disappointed.

I have no idea how to write a cogent review of this book. It rambles and wanders. It amuses and it infuriates. The bottom line - if you like Lamott's writing, this is a wonderful book that will make you think about your own priorities. She has made a list of sorts for her grandson. Some of this is meditation, some of it is pronouncement. If you have somehow missed Lamott, this is a good introduction to her at tomes scattershot approach to life and faith. Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC. This was a good one to read at a difficult time.

When I read books by Anne Lamot, I don't want them to end, and this one was no exception. This is more of a collection of essays on various topics including old age. At first I wondered where the book was going. It seemed a bit disjointed, but I enjoyed it and learned some good life lessons along the way.

I was reminded, first, of an observation by Alfred Russel Wallace upon the discovery of a new species - conceding that, to the average person, the excitement he felt would be seen as "lacking adequate cause." Magdalena explains, and in near-poetic language, conveys this excitement, and it is infectious. "Messiah" appears to be a nickname bestowed by a Spanish journalist, in part because Magdalena does look a little bit like Jesus, but also because his blunt refusal to accept extinction has driven him to superhuman efforts to propagate and restore rare species. Raised in a nature-loving family in rural Spain, his acceptance at and rise through the ranks of Britain's Kew Gardens also seems miraculous. Finally, the book serves well as a travelogue also, recounting fascinating destinations such as Bolivian jungles, the Australian Outback, Peruvian deserts, and most of all the Mascarene Islands in the Indian Ocean. The series with Chico Bon Bon is great. My 6 and 4 year old enjoy me reading these stories to them. After my 100th time (believe me I know) they still ask for it every now and then. It's entertaining just to read off the list of tools he carries in his tool belt. Kudos to the illustrator/author as the drawings were very well detailed and we enjoyed looking at them.

THis book cracks me up. The pictures are adorable and quirky, and the story is very humorous and well done. We bought it for my father in law (a contractor) and then ended up buying one for our son as well because it was too cute not to own our own copy. It is full of off-the-wall humor that the younger kids love (my third grade class loved it) and the older adults can appreicate as well. It's definitely worth it!

My 2 year old grandson love to build things and us tools so when I saw this book, I got the set for him. He loved and loves it yet. He now has his own tool belt and wears it as much as possible. This is a WONDERFUL BOOK for a child, especially if he has a dad who is into making and fixing things.

This is one of the small handful of books I don't rotate in and out of our read-most-nights collection. We read it at least once a week, maybe two or three. It's got detailed, fun illustrations and my 4yo loves the story.

Found out about this book from a handyman magazine. Great buy. My son laughs every time we go thru it. The fact that the monkey has a desire to use some critical thinking skills and tries to find a solution/tool is great. Exactly what I am wanting to teach my kids versus having everything just served-up to them.

I got this book for a couple little boys I babysit (age 2 and 5) because after I had checked in out from the library and subsequently returned it, they kept asking to read about Chico Bon Bon. I gave them the set of three for Christmas and it was a hit. Cute book with detailed illustrations that make it fun to read/look at again and again.

I bought this book for my 4-year-old son (turning 5 next month), because he's obsessed with monkeys. When I read this to him and his 7-year-old sister they get such a kick out of it. They both love it! The other 2 Monkey with a Toolbelt books are also great.

My 3 1/2 yr old daughter loved the first Chico Bon Bon book. Now she is in love with the second as well. Although Chico's adventures take place only in his home in this book, the story is fun and surprising, and the illustrations keep the laughs coming. (Even if you do need a magnifying glass to see them sometimes!) Worth every penny.
