Incredibly well written and Interesting history of the Western railroads and the Western Expansion they fueled. Filled with greedy developers, financial schemes, crooked politicians and graft at all levels. It also tells the story of the railroad workers, train robbers, Indians, immigrants, farmers, the National Grange, and a host of others effected by the Expansion West. Â Some reviewers criticized what they considered a failure to go into enough detail. I disagree. Entire books could be written on each of the railroads and the financial wizards or sometimes conmen that funded them. This book paints the broad view of 19th century railroad development, how they were funded, and how they drove the Westward Expansion movement. Brown keeps it readable and the book is complete in its own right, but could also trigger more study of the specific railroads, individuals or topics discussed.

The Good: Of course, well written. The man knew how to write. Very interesting look at different aspects of railroads that you might not think about but gave insight into not only how they worked, but also some of the social mores is the day -- like for instance, the roles of different people who provided services on the trains. Found myself understanding settlement in the West somewhat differently.The not so good. This book could use many more maps! How can you write about such a geography driven book (at least, the first half and have so few maps?) I mean, it's not like the names of towns along the route are household names and where they were in relation to the typography is hugely important to the story. Found it annoying that I had to find my own maps. Had it not been for Google Maps, probably would have bailed on the book. Could have done without the editorializing about modern rail failings. Kind of gratuitous, as if the complexities of transportation in the 21st Century are explained by the robber barons of the 19th Century.

Dee Brown tells the fascinating story of railroads in the United States. There is lots of information about the incredible challenges of the construction of our rail system. There is interesting information about the stiff resistance to railroads by riverboat companies who wanted to retain a sort of monopoly on transportation. There are also lots of uncomfortable details about the "robber barons", and governmental corruption (at the highest levels!) that helped these scoundrels bilk the American public to the extent that still today the financial heirs of these robber barons control the corridors that the public funded.Sadly the Kindle edition of the book is plagued with typos that seem to step from a scanning/OCR process that was not followed by adequate proof reading. A shame, because it is so much easier to carry multiple books around on an Adroid Tablet when traveling than the print editions.Well, although several of these typos caused perplexing confusion, most could be overcome.Buy this book and read it!

I thought I was purchasing a book about the transcontinental railroad and I was less than 1/3 of the way through with this book and the story of the transcontinental railroad was complete. The remainder of the book was a history of the railroads throughout the US and how the railroads, with the help of politicians, were able to hoodwink the public into paying for the railroads over and over again and give away a good portion of this country in the process. It was still a good book and I learned quite a lot about the railroad industry I did not know.

I am a history buff and I enjoyed reading this book. It was easy to read and entertaining but also presented all of the historical details of the development of America's rail network as it expanded from the Mid West to the Pacific Coast. Clearly the author spent an incredible amount of time and energy researching the background behind all of the "mini stories" that woven together make up this epic tale of railway building. The book is nicely structured and one chapter flows nicely into the next. This is a fine book for anyone interested in history of the development of railway transportation in the US or anyone interested in US history in general.

This is a fairly interesting book. It doesn't add anything new to the transcontinental story but it does get into detail of peoples reaction to their first ride across the country. It discusses how the Feeding of the passengers and the pullman cars. If you want a book on just the transcontinental building, buy something else.If you want to learn about what went on after May 10, 1869 then this is a good book!

I have been kind of torn on how to rate this book, I think it's really about a 4.5 in my opinion. So this was one of several Michael Dahl books I bought to reinforce skill sets that our son, who has some more specialized needs, is struggling with. What I really like about these books is that the sentence structures are simple, the emotions are clearly drawn and easy to read, and they are short, all of which allows our beautiful little Autistic dude to get through the books easier. He's short on patience for books, sitting is really *really* a 4 letter word in his universe unless it's for bubbles or TV at this time, and he struggles to register more subtly drawn expressions and connect them with the appropriate emotions. So those are all great strengths for these books.So for our handsome little man, I wouldn't exactly say listening is his problem. He hears you. Boy, does he hear you...and just about every other itsy bitsy teeny tiny squeak of a noise that happens in this house. It's actually *doing* what you asked him to do that's the problem. So that's where the half a star comes in. I think it would have been great if "...and he did it!" was thrown in there. I've been adlibbing and adding it in there myself. The point does come across in that it shows little elephant doing the action he's asked to do, but for our little guy, who from everything we can tell is super literal, in his mind if you just say "listen to me" he's thinking, "of course I listened to you, I heard every word, doesn't mean I think I need to do it because I certainly don't want to do it." Or something like that. He's non-verbal, but he has some pretty sophisticated grades of stink eye and eye rolling that pretty much clue you in to what's going on in his fabulously cute head.So, I think this is a very cute, short book that can be used to reinforce the doing part of listening as long as you point that out as needed. Most likely age appropriate for 18-24 month old kiddos, but for special needs kiddos or those with developmental delays, that range could be higher...our little man is 5.

Hello Genius I recommend to all friends with toddlers. I don't know why but the colors and the simple story/behavior examples just really sink in. My three year old loves this book as much as his others. I'll say to him "you are not being the little elephant that listens" and he immediately takes offense and it helps to let him know its unacceptable behavior. Why these get such toddler attention I do not know but they are very helpful in behavior modification in the 4 and under set!

Simple, short book that indirectly (ha) promotes listening. Sometimes when my son isn't listening, I'll casually mention...."remember when the elephant listened to his mom...."? It doesn't always immediately work, but it makes him think about it and sometimes breaks the current escalating situation. Every once in awhile, it stops him & makes him smile, too.

Nice board book. My son loves this series of books, even though he is 4 1/2 and generally into books aimed at his age range. I highly recommend these books because each topic is simplified and very straight forward, and the artwork is very cute. (Little Monkey Calms Down is one of his all time favorite books, fwiw)

For around age 2. Parents ask the little one to do something... and the little one listens to what his parents ask and does it. The book however does not do more than that so the book is a tad flat. My 3 year old needs a touch more explanation or pointers. Overall, it appears appropriate for age 2 but older kids need some more details. I will have to add in some stuff while I read.

This is the only "listen" type book I could find. I like the time to eat page but who needs to tell a toddler it's time to play??? There are much better examples to use. Toddlers don't use a loufa on a stick. My daughter thinks it's a toothbrush. Half the book is useful.

My 2 and 1/2 year old son loves this series of books. I bought all of them because I think the concept is great: teaching kids the right thing to do. My son loves to colorful images and silly things that happen in them. They are short books and do not have too many words on the page, which makes them nice and quick for reading time. I tend to read 3-4 of these each night at bedtime.At this time I can;t say they are 100% effective at behavior changes, but having him listen to the story does allow him to hear what is "right." And unlike Stephen J Gould's suggestion that religion and science should be kept separate, Sacks argues for a complementarity (a partnership) between them.This book is one of the most clearly articulated discussions on why both science and religion are necessary to maintain a full humanity and the way in which both need each other to avoid extremism. My finger was almost worn out with all the highlighting I was song on my Kindle. Sacks is very, very widely read, a deep thinker, and yet writes in a beautiful, easy-to-read narrative style making profound and memorable statements simply.His essential point is that science takes things apart to see how they work. Religion puts things together to see what they mean. The idea is simple but extremists on both ends of the alleged science vs religion divide have burdened this idea with some very destructive unhealthy nonsense. Sacks is gently critical of both religious and secular fundamentalists appealing for a respectful conversation which, all too often, neither side are willing to engage in.I can't speak highly enough of this book. It's one of the best I've read for ages. In fact, I nearly didn't read it, thinking that there can't be much more to say on the topic given the myriad books and debates on the topic. But I took the plunge and was incredibly rewarded. If you have any issues regarding the relationship between religion and science - whether you are an atheist or a "believer" - don't miss this brilliant, thought provoking read. It's easily digested meat for the mind!

It is an excellent book, written by a religious, well-educated, bright man.He is certainly an excellent writer, very clear, consistent. For me it wasthe first glimpse into a world of religious people.In my understanding, J. Sacks addresses "his" (religious) people to show them thatscience does not contradict religion. He addresses "my" side (atheists) and shows thatreligion is the only good way to run a society and that "The atheist is nomore sure of the godlessness of the universe than the believer is of his orher God-filled vision. So why choose that way rather than this?"In "Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind" by Y. Harari, the author shows thatreligion is the only way to run a society. But, Harary presents religion inan abstract way, defined as something not proven, but considered true amongpeople that form a society. In his model socialism, capitalism, humanism(religion of today in the free world), evolutionism (and Nazism as a part ofit), Judaism, Christianity, and so on, are religions.For J. Sacks religion is something that involves God. From here, in hispresentation, there is good religion, bad religion and everything else. Thelast two, in his presentation, are bad. As a humanist, I cannot accept this(humanism is in the category of the last two), but I am aware now, afterreading these books, that this is, like it always was, just "good religionagainst bad religion".In this book there is very detailed presentation of monotheismand it's influence on mankind. Based on principles of monotheism,the author shows that science, Darwinism included (!), absolutely does not contradictreligion. This is between him and his people, but it is presented on a veryhigh level. To me it has no meaning, not because it is wrong, but because itis irrelevant. Big bang or God makes no difference to me.J. Sacks never mentions in his book religious rituals, prayers, holidays,etc., like they do not exist. This is smart. He would lose me instantly,should he act otherwise.To summarize, for me this glimpse into the world of religion is veryinteresting. To understand what monotheism is, is important, though not ofbig use for me. Presentation of problems that challenge any human societyat any time is important. However, the book did not convince me thatreligion that involves God is the only way to run a human society.Anyway, to read this book is a pleasure.

I've only read about half of the book but Rabbi Sack's insight in how science and religion interact and compliment each other is enlightening

I am a long-time Harry Potter fan. As such, I owned all of these books from the day of their original releases, and remember them well. Unfortunately, the newest released set from today (March 14, 2017), which I bought to replace the copies I ultimately lost in a house fire, are a fundamentally different product. To be fair, "The Tales of Beedle the Bard" and "Quidditch Through the Ages" are both fine. They're newly printed in a nice matching hardcover style that suits the boxed set well and really makes them feel a bit like textbooks at the same time. I don't like the cover art on the Beedle book as much as the original, and I seem to remember (but may be mistaken) some of the pictures being bigger in the original, but these aren't deal breakers. The content for both of these volumes appears to have remained fundamentally intact through to the new publication design.The real problem rests with the new release of the "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" book. Many people reading this review (and indeed, there are even pictures posted from previous releases showing it) may remember that the original release was presented as a copy of the textbook as owned by Harry Potter. As such, it contained a lot of doodles and "handwritten" notes from Harry and his friends throughout the book, integrating a lot of humor and personality into the textbook content about the various creatures. Unfortunately though, those notes are, in the new version, removed. There are one or two "notes" from the "editor" in the new foreword to the book, but that's it. I know that it probably costs more to have so much varying formatting and everything, but it's not like they couldn't recoup the costs. As it stands though, this new clean version essentially feels like a partial text. The core content is there, but the personality, humor, and fun that made the original so much better is all gone. It's still good, if you want to know about the magical creatures in the Harry Potter universe, but it really used to be so much better.

It's a must for all Harry Potter's fans !The box is very good quality and very beautiful, you learn a lot about J.K.Rowling's world and annotations (that the characters have written) present in the books add a nice touch to these books. One would feel really borrowing the books in Hogwarts Library !In short, this is a must have for Potterheads, so it can make a very nice gift and it will be perfect for a collection.♪ I hope this gave you an idea of this product. After watching Fantastic Beasts, my daughter was hooked on the Harry Potter universe. She really wanted to get the Fantastic Beasts book so when I saw this I ended up getting it for her for Christmas. She was very excited and read them through within a couple of weeks time. They are really fun books for Harry Potter fans!

They were gorgeous! My sister loved them. Beautiful designed covers in a beautiful box. But to confirm other reviews comments Ron and Harry amd hermione's markings on the margins have been removed and are not in this addition. Quite dissapointing.

These books were great, however they were as advertised- textbooks. This means that they were strictly informational. But, they did have funny little comments and doodles from presumably Ron and Harry scattered throughout the set. I would definitely recommend these books for their quality too, as they were perfectly packaged, and made.

If you're a HP fan then this is a must have. This collection really helps round out the HP universe by giving more detail to books and stories that were only mentioned in the original stories. My children LOVE the Tales of Beetle the Bard. The books themselves look beautiful in the little set box on the shelf next to the rest of the HP books, too.

I love Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them, and I feel that it is a must have for any hardcore fan or for someone who wants to learn more about the Wizarding World. It arrived on time after being released because I preordered it a month a head of time. It was in perfect condition and well packaged so it would not get damaged.
