About the Author

Jesse Byock is Distinguished Professor of Old Norse Studies in the UCLA Scandinavian Section and at UCLA’s Cotsen Institute of Archaeology. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University and teaches Old Norse, Icelandic sagas, and Viking Archaeology. Prof. Byock directs the Mosfell Archaeological Project (MAP) in Iceland, excavating a Viking Age longhouse, harbor, and valley. The long-awaited companion of Viking Language 1 is truly worth the wait, to my knowledge there has never been a serviceable Old Norse reader, and just as I compared Viking Language 1 favorably to the 6th edition of the Wheelock's Latin textbook in my previous review, so too will I compare this book favorably with the Wheelock's Latin reader. So rare is language instruction that is both systematic and effective, as well as challenging and exciting, that I cannot praise Byock's work enough. I can only hope that, not unlike the continuing Wheelock's Latin analogy, there might be a Viking Language 3: Compendium of Runic Inscriptions someday, or at least something to that effect.

I love this book series. When embarking on a way of eating that is significantly different from what you are used to, it is such a relief to have quick and easy guides that cover all meals for a whole month's worth of eating. Makes the transition super easy.

Great recipes, but make sure you calculate your own nutritional values. I have found the values stated in the book to be significantly off from my own calculations.

I have purchased Breakfast in Five, Lunch in Five, and Dinner in Five. I bought these books because my wife and I have started Ketogenic diets.These books provide tasty, quick, and easy to follow recipes for meals that has gotten us beyond bacon and eggs. I've tried about a dozen of the recipes so far have been great.I gave this book 4 stars because I found that listed ingredients in the Blueberry Pancake recipe to be incongruent with the instructions i.e. salt listed in the instructions section but isn't listed in the ingredient section so I was left to my own thinking as to how much salt to add. My wife felt I added to much salt. Now I know how much to put in!Being new to ketogenic dieting I am very

Loving this cookbook! I've made 2 breakfasts so far (blueberry pancakes and souffle) and they're amazing. It blows my mind how easy these recipes are.I've tried many books before but they're always complex and I always have to go shopping for a ton of ingredients. Looking through the recipes, I have the ingredients for at least 10 of them, which is awesome.I also bought Lunch and Dinner in Five and am thoroughly enjoying them as well. It's worth the price because I'm actually motivated to make these recipes.

I am following the recipes exactly, I am getting the correct and lowest carb ingredients I can. I have been doing Keto for years. Several recipes are more than 5 net carb. So for the book to say up to 5 net carbs is wrong. Also several of the recipes are not even complete, missing ingredances or not explaining where to use listed ingredances. This seems very rushed, and lacks proof reading. It was a complete waste of money. I bought all 4 books so I only hope the other 3 are written better than this one.

She made even the most obscure titles sound interesting.Secondly, Annie is just really funny. I can imagine her actually holding these books in her hands and expressing her clever sentiments. Or quietly being snarky with me by the bookshelf at a party. I love the little personal and family details that she weaves into the stories, making the book even more endearing to me.Finally, this book inspired me to read more books. I love books that make me feel this way. I also found a list of new literary friends I need to meet and worlds to get lost in during my reading. And, the author gives to best answer to the question of which author would you invite for dinner, and why. The answer is Anne Frank, "because I would love to watch that bright young woman’s smile grow upon learning that she is an internationally celebrated author." And I am not crying now, YOU are crying.

Loved this book! It is split into two parts, the first consists of breakup / love letters to the books in her life as a librarian, and the second are hilarious book lists that may help you in certain situations, such as how to turn your lover into a reader.
 Regarding the letters - there were books I had not read (Virgin Suicides), and some I added to my TBR because of her letters (as if I needed more to read). She was spot on in some of her reviews (50 shades...) and some I politely disagreed with (I was not that big a fan of The Goldfinch, sorry).
The book lists were my favorite though, and I thought this format was absolutely genius. She starts the lists off with the topic of 'I'd Rather Be Reading', and gives excuses to tell your friends so you can stay home and read, along with a book that pairs with the theme of the excuse. I was dying on a few of them, for example, "I'll be at my high school reunion. Want to be my date?" And then she recommends Home Land by Sam Lipsyte, which is apparently a novel about a guy that has a high school nickname of Teabag. It just keeps going from there.


Honestly, I bought this book because the excerpt amused me. Now I tremble with the thought that I could easily have missed it. It's just like the long, fun conversations I had with my bookstore coworkers all the time. It brought back so many happy memories, and renewed my desire to become a librarian myself. That's always been my dream, and this book perfectly showcases why. Not incidentally, my TBR list has experienced a growth spurt, too.

This book is so great! It's funny, charming, and completely relatable read. I couldn't put it down and couldn't stop laughing while reading it. The author is a great writer, and I really liked this charming little book with a ton of personality and character (I even loved the vulgarity, it made me laugh even more!). It was hilarious. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a great new read, and this book would be perfect for your next book club book!

I love this book. Most of the books that are a subject for her letters I have read or am familiar with, so her "letter" to the book is really meaningful and true. A few I haven't read and have now added to my reading list. I found the tone startling at first but soon settled in and soon found it laugh out loud funny. I haven't laughed that much with a book since the last David Sedaris came out. The best one for a laugh was the Steven King. My co-workers in the break room insisted that I pass the book around after I finished reading the letter to his book. ( each letter is about a page and a half so it's easy for multiple people to read it on a half hour break. ) I will wait impatiently for her next book.

Well, we certainly agree on most books! It's refreshing to find someone that agrees with my passion for Fahrenheit, as well as my distain for The Hobbit. While our opinions differ on the "Killing" series, it's nice to have someone helping me avoid other humans to be with my books. I think this is the beginning of a long, wonderful friendship.And if you like this style of writing directly to the book, you will adore Dear Fahrenheit 451 as much as I do. Every bibliophile needs this book.

Words cannot fully express how grateful I am to have this book. A lot of us are suffering in the same mental illness that we're having which is depression. It came from the anxiety that you're feeling and then it leads to depression. Self doubts, low self esteem, small confidence are the terms and words that could bring us down. This book talks and tackled all about it and how we can stand up for our selves. It contains a lot of advice and motivations to conquer all these mental illnesses and try to start on living less depressed and stressed. Definitely commendable to those who are dealing with the same problem as me.

Several good tools in this book. I can attest that surrounding yourself with positive people certainly helps. I like the way they break things down in this book and make each option simplified and easy to try. Good book if suffer any form of depression you should get this book and try some of the suggestions.

The activities in this books are short and specific, easy to follow actions which some can be done instantly and quickly. The focus of the book is purely on the solutions against depressions, instead of dwelling into what have gone wrong. Very positive hearted book, would recommend to anyone who needs some self-help or know someone who does.

There are two types of people who will want to read this book: those who like adventure and those who want to see if EMS is for them. Peter Canning is a real-life paramedic in Hartford,Connecticut, who once worked as a speech writer for former Governor Lowell Weicker. Both of Canning's books are full to bursting with real-life adventure. EMS crews in Hartford have little down time as they go from heart attack patient to auto wreck to infant not breathing to drug overdose. Canning takes his readers along through adventure after adventure at a dizzying pace.At the same time, Canning shows some of the toll that EMS work takes on the people who do it. In his first book, Canning makes the job switch to EMS. His progression is the usual one from someone who is thrilled with the excitement of the work to someone who wants to earn the respect of his peers to someone who realizes that it's the patient that counts. In _Rescue 471_ Canning has become a well experienced paramedic.But there are still struggles. Canning works his way through the times when EMS made the transition from a health need to a business dealing in medicine. His smaller EMS company is bought out by a larger one. There are new regulations promulgated by unknown faces. There's the worry about pay and jobs though one of Canning's friends reminds him that EMS companies still need "meat on the seat." Canning also works his way through the worker burnout caused by the long hours of work and dealing with stressful situations. One night Canning just doesn't care anymore. As he drives home, he speeds through the red traffic signals and arrives at his home breathless. I have to commend him for admitting how close he came to losing it.EMS work in my part of the country is different yet so much alike. The hours are long. A shift is 24 hours on and 48 hours off. The pay is lousy. The only way that the guys make a living is by going from one shift to the next. One medic once told me he had not been home for 11 days. That was after he told me he was trying to leave EMS for nursing. Most of the smaller EMS companies in this area are now gone. Larger companies have taken over the rural areas and even some of the larger cities. This has lead to a demand for medics with techs being told that they need not apply for a job. So two years of schooling (some less, some more) is required to get a job in EMS. And I know of some areas where the EMS guys are getting burnout in about three years. Oh, and did I say the pay is lousy?To medic or not to medic. Canning worked his way through his burnout. And me? I still have my National EMS Registration and am proud of it.

Reading this. As a old rural emt it's fun to know that city life is pretty comperable to rural. Well maybe not hiking into 70 yr old with broken femur who had been out all night after horse accident all alone. He was tougher than we were btw

This is a great book! I have the pleasure of working EMS with peter canning (he's still a medic in the city btw) and a great one at that! Best part about this book is its all true! Great read for all people. If you liked this book I highly suggest his other book!

I brought this book on vacation with me for an easy read. I really enjoyed it. You really feel for the paramedic, get excited with him, frustrated with him, grieve with him. It went by quickly and I would recommend it to anyone in health care.

This book gets your heart beating with drama and excitement. Looks into the emotions of a paramedic as he deals with his patients under some stressful situations. I highly recommend it to anyone dealing with pre-hospital care.
